Plymouth Science Park, previously known as Tamar Science Park, is a science and technology park located in Plymouth, Devon, in southern England.

The park was incorporated in 1995, with two principal stakeholders and founding partners – Plymouth City Council and the University of Plymouth. The science park is situated to the north of Plymouth at Derriford, 7 km from the city centre. The site is on 25 acres 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m2) of occupiable space, with 6.2 acres still to be developed. [1]

The park

Plymouth Science Park was established in 1996 under the auspices of Plymouth City Council and the University of Plymouth. [2] The park is being developed in several phases and is located in an area of 25 acres off Derriford Road, Plymouth. It adjoins Derriford Hospital, Plymouth University and the University of St Mark & St John. It offers 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m2) of office accommodation as well as wet and dry laboratory space. [1] The park was officially renamed the Plymouth Science Park in 2014 [3] [4] and is the largest science park in the south of England. [5]

Facilities

Plymouth Science Park has an Advisory Board made up of experienced business advisors; tenants of the park can obtain up to 100 hours per year of business advice free of charge. Tenants can also be helped with their finance and investment needs through several initiatives such as "investment days" and access to various government investment schemes. [1]

The park provides suitable accommodation for conferences, lectures and meetings, catering for up to one hundred people. A fibreoptic network allows superfast and ultrafast broadband, and there is an on-site, Tier 3 data centre. There is a virtual office, office pod and expansion space, and on-site teams to help with information and communications technology, facilities and the organisation of events. There is a bistro on-site, CCTV system and twenty-four-hour security. [1]

Tenants

In 2016, over 120 businesses were located in the park, mainly being in the fields of life science, digital technology and e-commerce. [1] The tenants have a total annual turnover of £100 million, and vary from one-man start-ups to multi-national corporations.

The first four stages of the park have been completed. The Hyperbaric Medical Centre was the first undertaking to take up residence on the Park, along with the Diving Diseases Research Centre in 1996. [6] Two years later saw phase 1, the opening of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre (ITTC). Phase 2 followed, with the opening of another ITTC in 2002. Phase 3 saw the building of the headquarters of Devon and Cornwall Business Link and three other lettable buildings. In 2008, phase 4 followed with the addition of further lettable area, the Data Centre and the bistro. Phase 5 and 6 are to follow, [7] with phase 5 expected to cost around £7 million. [8] HLM Architects are the lead consultant for phase 5 and BAM Construction (part of BAM Nuttall) are the contractors. [9] [10] In 2016, renewable energy WITT and Antony Jinman's business Education Through Expeditions took up residence at the Park [11] and Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry a Medical and Dental school is located there. [12]

Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) now known as Peninsula Dental School and Peninsula Medical School was a Medical and Dental school in England, run in partnership with the University of Exeter, the University of Plymouth and the NHS in Devon and Cornwall. In January 2013 the school began disaggregation to form Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and the University of Exeter Medical School. The school had campuses at the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, the John Bull Building, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Teaching of medical students also took place at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, South Devon Healthcare Trust in Torbay and General Practices across the region plus a number of community orientated healthcare settings.

Derriford Hospital Hospital in Plymouth, Devon

Derriford Hospital is a large teaching hospital in Plymouth, England. The hospital serves Plymouth and nearby areas of Devon and Cornwall. It also provides tertiary cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and renal transplant surgery for the whole of the South West Peninsula. It is managed by the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. It was designated a major trauma centre in 2013. A helipad capable of night operation was opened in 2015, to replace the existing daytime-only grass pad. The hospital is used for clinical training of medical students from the Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine. It is one of five hospitals with attached Ministry of Defence Hospital Units to cater to service personnel.

Exeter Science Park

Exeter Science Park is a business park in the United Kingdom for companies specialising in science and technology. It is a 26 hectares site next to junction 29 of the M5 motorway, between Clyst Honiton and the outskirts of the city of Exeter. The park is linked to the University of Exeter Innovation Centre, which provides accommodation for knowledge-intensive business start-ups. Exeter University was stimulated to develop the park by the desire to turn ideas generated at the university into products and services that could be marketed. It is managed by Peninsula Innovations, a subsidiary of Exeter University which also runs the Innovation Centre.

St John's Innovation Centre (SJIC) is a business incubator in Cambridge, England. It houses a concentration of science and technology related businesses.

The culture of Plymouth is a social aspect of the unitary authority and city of Plymouth that is located in the south-west of England. Built in 1815, Union Street was at the heart of Plymouth's historical culture. It became known as the servicemen's playground, as it was where sailors from the Royal Navy would seek entertainment. During the 1930s, there were 30 pubs and it attracted such performers as Charlie Chaplin to the New Palace Theatre. It is now the late-night hub of Plymouth's entertainment strip, but has a reputation for trouble at closing hours.

2008 Exeter attempted bombing

The Exeter bombing was a failed bombing attempt taking place on 22 May 2008, at the Giraffe cafe and restaurant in Princesshay, Exeter, United Kingdom. Nicky Reilly, 22, from Plymouth, pleaded guilty on 15 October 2008 to launching a failed suicide attack. The attacker was the only person injured.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, formerly known as Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is the organisation which runs Derriford Hospital, and the co-located Royal Eye Infirmary (REI), as well as the Child Development Centre in Plymouth, Devon. The trust is an NHS trust that provides secondary health services in Plymouth and surrounding areas.

Winterstoke Hundred Academy is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England.

Wayzata Bay Center Shopping mall in Minnesota, US

Wayzata Bay Center was an enclosed shopping mall in Wayzata, Minnesota, a suburb of the Twin Cities. Wayzata Bay Center once comprised 127,000 square feet (12,000 m2) of retail space, with approximately 30 stores on one level, but closed in 2011 after the city of Wayzata agreed upon constructing a new facility on the same land. The mall was once owned by Madison Marquette until residents of the city purchased the mall for $16 million in December 2004.
