Podcast Movement (PM) is an annual conference for the podcast industry. It is one of the largest gatherings of participants in podcasting, with over 3,000 attendees in 2019. [1] Described as "for podcasters, by podcasters", [2] it focuses on collaboration and networking among attendees, in addition to education and encouragement.

Contents

The 2017 conference was split into different tracks covering different aspects of podcasting such as Creation, Technical, Industry, Monetization, Marketing, Society, Culture & Advocacy, Audio Drama, and Broadcasters Meets Podcasters. [3] Featured speakers have included Sarah Koenig, Aisha Tyler, Kevin Smith, Pat Flynn, Guy Raz, Dan Carlin, Terry Gross, Alex Blumberg, Roman Mars, Marc Maron, Glynn Washington, Mark Cuban and Aaron Mahnke. Attendees are made up of amateur and professional podcasters, as well as media professionals working for radio broadcasters, podcast networks, technology companies and advertisers [12]

History

The first conference in 2014 was funded via a Kickstarter campaign. [13] The target goal of $11,000 was met within the first 24 hours. [14] In 2019, the organizers announced an additional annual event called 'Podcast Movement Evolutions,' the first of which took place in Los Angeles in February 2020. [15] [16]

Controversy

On August 25, 2022, the official Twitter account of Podcast Movement apologized for hosting the Daily Wire, a conservative podcasting website co-owned by Ben Shapiro. The organization alleged at least one attendee "felt pain" by Shapiro's presence. [17] On September 8 of the same year, they apologized to Mr. Shapiro via Twitter for their previous reaction toward him and his company. [18]

Audacy, Inc. is an American broadcasting company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1968 as Entercom Communications Corp., it is the second largest radio company in the United States, owning 235 radio stations across 48 media markets.

Podcasts, previously known as "audioblogs", had its roots dating back to the 1980s. With the advent of broadband Internet access and portable digital audio playback devices such as the iPod, podcasting began to catch hold in late 2004. Today there are more than 115,000 English-language podcasts available on the Internet, and dozens of websites available for distribution at little or no cost to the producer or listener.

Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing is an educational podcast produced by Mignon Fogarty that was launched in July 2006 and the title of a print book by Fogarty that was released in July 2008. The podcast, which has ranked as high as #2 on iTunes, offers short one-topic English grammar lessons at no charge to subscribers hoping to improve their writing skills.

Guy Raz is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of podcasting. He’s been instrumental in creating some of the most iconic podcasts in the world including How I Built This, the kids science podcast Wow in the World, and TED Radio Hour. Guy is also the force behind the celebrity interview podcast The Great Creators and the business podcast Wisdom from the Top. The New York Times has described him as “one of the most popular podcasters in history.” Collectively, his shows reach 19 million listeners a month.

<i>99% Invisible</i> Radio program and podcast on design

99% Invisible is a radio show and podcast produced and created by Roman Mars that focuses on design. It began as a collaborative project between San Francisco public radio station KALW and the American Institute of Architects in San Francisco. PRX has distributed the show for broadcasting on a number of radio stations and as a podcast on the Radiotopia network. On April 28, 2021, Roman Mars announced in an introduction of a re-released episode that 99% Invisible had been purchased by Sirius XM and marketed as part of its Stitcher Radio brand.

Song Exploder is a music podcast created by Hrishikesh Hirway, who hosted it from its 2014 inception until late 2018 and again from December 2019 onwards. In January 2019, Thao Nguyen became a guest host for the year, with Christian Koons serving as producer, and Hirway moving to executive producer. The show features musicians talking about the creative process behind an individual song while "deconstructing" the song into its component parts. As of 2021, the show's team is composed of host and producer Hirway, illustrator Carlos Lerma, and Music Clearance Director Kathleen Smith.

Reply All is an American podcast from Gimlet Media that ran from 2014 to 2022, featuring stories about how people shape the internet, and how the internet shapes people. It was created by P. J. Vogt and Alex Goldman, who were the show's original hosts; they had previously hosted the technology and culture podcast TLDR for WNYC. Emmanuel Dzotsi became a third cohost in 2020.

<i>The Message</i> (podcast) Science fiction podcast

The Message is a science fiction podcast co-produced by Panoply and GE Podcast Theater. Diegetically its title is CypherCast and it is hosted by the fictional character Nicky Tomalin, portrayed by Annapurna Sriram. Tomalin's fictional podcast covers the decoding of a message from outer space received 70 years ago. Over the course of 8 weeks, listeners follow a team of top cryptologists as they attempt to decipher, decode, and understand the alien message. It won the Webby Award in 2016 for the best use of native advertising.

Wondery is an American podcast network and publisher of podcasts including Dirty John, Dr. Death, and The Shrink Next Door. Wondery was founded in 2016 by entrepreneur and media executive Hernan Lopez. The company was launched with backing from 20th Century Fox. In late 2020, it was announced that Wondery had been purchased and is now owned by Amazon Music.

Tanis is a mystery pseudo-documentary podcast. Published by Pacific Northwest Stories, it is part of their series of podcasts set in the same fictional universe which, despite being works of fiction, are presented as legitimate true stories both within the podcast and outside of it; the podcast has no credited writers or performers, as the events and characters are framed as real. The main character, Nic Silver, is voiced by executive producer Terry Miles.

The Fantasy Footballers is a sports podcast hosted by Andy Holloway, Jason Moore, and Mike Wright where they provide fantasy football advice. The show runs continuously throughout the year with a minimum of two episodes per week during the offseason.

Rico Gagliano is an American journalist, podcaster and radio host. He is best known as the co-host, with Brendan Francis Newnam, of American Public Media’s arts-and-culture radio show and podcast “The Dinner Party Download”, and as a reporter for the public radio business show “Marketplace". He has also written for television and for print media, including the New York Times. He is currently Head of Audio at the cinephile streaming service and film distributor MUBI.

Twenty Thousand Hertz is a podcast about "the world’s most recognizable and interesting sounds". Episodes are published every other Wednesday.
