Poema Newland (born 4 May 2000) is a French sailor and kitefoiler. She was the European Formula Kite champion in 2021.

Life

Newland was born in Narbonne in 2000. [1] She started kiting quite late in high school but quickly became Mediterranean champion in 2016 in the freestyle1 category before specializing in kite foil.

Newland competed in the 2018 Youth Olympics where kitesurfing was a new Olympic sport. [2] She won a silver medal. This made her one of the first female Olympic medalists in kitesurfing along with Nina Font, also winning silver, and Sofia Tomasoni, who won gold. [3] She joined the Institut d'études politiques de Paris via the high-level sports course which could be followed on-line. [4]

During the 2021 Festikite at Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, she won the title of European Formula Kite champion on 12 Speptember. [5]

In 2023, she climbed to the third step of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia 20234 then participated in the Sailing World Championships which included Formula Kite for the first time. She beat the American Daniela Moroz while Lauriane Nolot and Ellie Aldridge took gold and silver. [6] She came eighth in the edition won by her compatriot Lauriane Nolot. [7] In September, she won the gold medal at the 3rd Mediterranean Beach Games "Heraklion 2023" at Ammoudara beach on Crete. She beat the French World champion Lauriane Nolot and the Italian Tiana Laporte. [8]

In March 2024 she gained a bronze medal at the Formula Kite European Championships in the Mar Menor lagoon in Spain. [9] The top three finishers Lauriane Nolot, Jessie Kampman and Newland were all French riders competing intensely. Newland had a crash in the final and did not appear on the podium as she was "too emotional". [10]

The World Chempionships took place in Hyères in May 2024 where she was living. The final race saw her in fourth position behind Lauriane Nolot, the British surfer Ellie Aldridge and Jessie Kampman. [11]

Breiana Whitehead is an Olympic kitesurfer from Australia. She was the first athlete selected for the Australian team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Eleanor Aldridge is a British sailor from Dorset who competes in women's kite foiling. She won the 2023 Formula Kite European Championships and took the silver that year in the World Championships. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Aldridge won a gold medal in the women's Formula Kite event.

Lauriane Nolot is a French professional kitesurfer. She is a two-time world champion in Formula Kite, winning in both 2023 and 2024. Nolot won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the inaugural women's Formula Kite event.

Daniela Moroz is an American sailor who became the World champion at Formula Kite six times between 2016 and 2022.

Jessie Kampman is a French Formula Kite surfer. She has won silver medals at the European championships and in 2024 she won a world bronze medal.

Elena Kalinina is a Russian World champion at Formula Kite where competitors use kites to propel small hydrofoils. Kalinina first became a World Champion in 2014 when she was seventeen.

Julia Damasiewicz is a Polish formula kitesurfer. She was the European champion in 2020.

Benyapa "Fawn" Jantawan is a real estate agent and an Olympic kite surfer from Thailand. She was the silver medallist at the 19th Asian Games in 2023.

Julie Paturau is the Mauritian-born African champion kitefoiler who qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Annelous Lammerts is a Dutch Formula Kite competitor and designated Olympian. She won the 2022 Hempel World Cup Allianz Regatta and the silver medal at the 2023 Formula Kite European Championships. Lammerts won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the inaugural women's Formula Kite event.

Leonie Meyer is a German sailor, medical student and prospective Olympic kitesurfer.

Maggie Eillen Pescetto is an Italian Formula Kite olympic athlete in sailing who took the silver position at the Kite Open Africa and Middle East Championship in 2022. She was nominated for Olympic competition at formula kite in 2024.

Elena Lengwiler born Elena Bosshard is a Swiss Ice Hockey player and a nominated kitefoiler for the 24 Olympics. She was fourth in the 2024 European championships and she represented Switzerland in Formula Kite at the 2024 Olympics.

Ariane Imbert is a kite foiler who was the French champion five times and on two occasions she was nearly the World champion. She became the French National Coach.
