Sofia Tomasoni (born 27 February 2002 in Bologna) is an Italian kitesurfer and winner of the women's Youth Olympic title in Twin Tip Racing in 2018.

Life

Tomasoni was born in 2002. She competed in the Youth Olympics in 2018 where kitesurfing (Twin Tip) was a new sport. She became the first woman to ever win an Olympic title in kitesurfing. Both Nina Font and Poema Newland were the runners-up taking silver. [1] She ranked first in the world for Twin Tip Racing in the years 2017 and 2018 before switching to the Formula Kite discipline. The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), is the only kiteboarding class inside the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). The IKA class rules fall in the category of a development class.

Robert "Rob" Douglas is an American professional sailor known for using a kiteboard in speed sailing records attempts. In 2008 Douglas broke the world speed sailing record on a kiteboard, hitting a top speed of 49.84 knots. Douglas again became the holder of the speed record in October 2010 when he was clocked at 55.65 knots. In 2019 while competing in La Palme France Rob set another world record in kitesurfing by sailing an average speed of 39.04 kts over 1 nautical mile.

Formula Kite is the kitesurfing class chosen by World Sailing for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The class features a foil kite and a board with a hydrofoil. The equipment is not one-design, but instead competitors use their choice of approved production equipment. The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) manages the class. The class is for men and women.

Maximilian Maeder is a Singaporean kitesurfer. He is the reigning Formula Kite World, Asian and European champion and holds the distinction of being the youngest winner in any Olympic sailing class competition, achieving this remarkable feat at the age of 16. He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the inaugural men's formula kite event, where he reached the finals and won the bronze medal. Maeder is also a three-time Formula Kite youth world champion in consecutive years from 2021 to 2023 and won various open championships across Europe, Asia and Pan America.

Poema Newland is a French sailor and kitefoiler. She was the European Formula Kite champion in 2021.

Breiana Whitehead is an Olympic kitesurfer from Australia. She was the first athlete selected for the Australian team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Stephanie "Steph" Bridge is a United Kingdom kitesurfer who became the World Formula Kite champion five times between 2009 and 2016. She is the leading figure in the "Team Bridge" family.

Leonie Meyer is a German sailor, medical student and prospective Olympic kitesurfer.
