The Sailing World Championships (formerly ISAF Sailing World Championships) are World championships in sailing for the 10 events contested at the Summer Olympics, organized by World Sailing (formerly ISAF) and held every four years since 2003. In contrast to other years, when each class organise their World championship under supervision of World Sailing, they are the combined World championships for all the disciplines of the next Summer Olympics and serves as the major qualification event for it.

History

In 1998, the ISAF World Sailing Championships were held in Dubai. The ISAF Sailing World Championships was held in Cádiz in 2003, followed by Cascais in 2007 and Perth in 2011. [1]

In 2014, Santander hosted the 4th ISAF Sailing World Championships attracting more than 1,100 competitors, which distributed half of qualifications for the 2016 Summer Olympics sailing event. [1]

The 2018 edition, in Aarhus, Denmark, saw the introduction of Formula Kite classes. [2] The 2023 event, orginially scheduled for 2002, took place in The Hague, the Netherlands. [3] The 2023 edition saw the introduction of para classes. [4]

For the edition before the 2028 Summer Olympics, World Sailing decided to split the event into one championship for one-person events and one for two-person events, with the 2026 event awarded to Valencia, Spain, and the 2027 event awarded to Gdynia, Poland. [5]

The 49er World Championships are international sailing regattas in the 49er and 49er FX classes organized by the International Sailing Federation. It was first held in 1997. In 2013, the 49er FX class was added to the programme.

The 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships was held in Perth, Western Australia, this was the third edition of the ISAF Sailing World Championships. It is the world championships for all disciplines used at the upcoming Olympics. As it used to allocate 75% of the qualification quota for the 2012 Summer Olympics this event has added significance.

Anton Carl Diderik Dahlberg is a Swedish sailor, who specializes in the 470 class, a two-person dinghy. He has represented Sweden, along with his partner Sebastian Östling, in two editions of the Olympic Games, and with Fredrik Bergström in 2016 and 2020, winning an Olympic silver in 2020. He has been representing the Royal Swedish Yacht Club throughout most of his career.

John Sebastian Östling is a Swedish sailor, who specializes in the 470 class, a two-person dinghy. He represented Sweden, along with his partner Anton Dahlberg, in two editions of the Olympic Games, and has also been training representing Royal Swedish Yacht Club throughout most of his sporting career under his personal coach and mentor Per Frykholm.

The main qualification event for sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics will be the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships. The rest of the quota places will be awarded at the 2015 World Championships and at Continental Qualification Events.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sailing Aarhus</span>

Sailing Aarhus is a non-profit, sport event organization and the largest organization for water sports in Denmark with 3000 members. The mission statement is to promote and encourage sailing by attracting and organizing regattas, events and related social activities. The organization has and will host a number of European and world championships in different ship classes of the International Sailing Federation. Headquarters is located in the sports-political centre in Idrættens Hus Vest at the Stadium of Aarhus.

The 2018 Hempel Sailing World Championships were held in Aarhus, Denmark, from 30 July to 12 August 2018. It was the fifth edition of the Sailing World Championships. It was the world championships for all disciplines used at the next olympics. Sailors from over 100 nations raced in the waters of the Bay of Aarhus for world championships medals and the possibility to be qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sailing at the Summer Youth Olympics</span>

Sailing has featured as a sport at the Youth Olympic Summer Games since its first edition in 2010. The Youth Olympic Games are multi-sport event and the games are held every four years just like the Olympic Games. With sailing limited to four events sailing has chosen to feature athlete under 16 in two disciplines. This allows older youth competitors in sailing to focus on the Olympic disciplines through events like the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships as the games could permit sailors up to 18 years old.

Ragna Agerup is a Norwegian Olympic sailor and a Junior World champion. She represents the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club in Oslo and New York Yacht Club in New York City. Her college team was Brown University in Providence, RI.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Formula Kite</span> Kitesurfing class

Formula Kite is the kitesurfing class chosen by World Sailing for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The class features a foil kite and a board with a hydrofoil. The equipment is not one-design, but instead competitors use their choice of approved production equipment. The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) manages the class. The class is for men and women.

The 2023 Sailing World Championships were held in The Hague, the Netherlands, from 8 to 20 August 2023. It was the sixth edition of the Sailing World Championships and the world championships for all disciplines at the next Olympics, and for four para sailing classes. It took place on the waters off Scheveningen and offered the chance to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, whose sailing competition will be held in Marseille. Para sailing will be held on Braassemermeer. Approximately 1,400 sailors were expected.
