World championships in sailing

Last updated

World championships in sailing are world championships organised or sanctioned by World Sailing (formerly the International Sailing Federation or ISAF). As a sport, sailing has the largest number of world championships due to the diversity of equipment and disciplines.

World Sailing International sailing sports body

World Sailing (WS) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Sailing (sport) recreational or competitive sport

The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Racing disciplines include matches within a fleet of sailing craft, between a pair thereof or among teams. Additionally, there are specialized competitions that include setting speed records. Racing formats include both closed courses and point-to-point contests; they may be in sheltered waters, coast-wise or on the open ocean. Most competitions are held within defined classes or ratings that either entail one type of sailing craft to ensure a contest primarily of skill or rating the sailing craft to create classifications or handicaps.

World Sailing - Sanctioned World Championships

An ISAF Open Match Racing World Champion has been named annually since 1988. Since 2006 the World Match Racing Tour Champion has been named ISAF Match Racing World Champion.

World Match Racing Tour

Founded in 2000, the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) is featuring world class sailors including America’s Cup and Olympic champions, the WMRT brings together the very best match racing sailors in the world, in a global championship series. WMRT is exclusively sanctioned with ‘Special Event Status’ by World Sailing, the sport’s world governing body. The winner of the WMRT each year is crowned official Match Racing World Champion.

The International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) formerly the ISAF Radio Sailing Division is an affiliate member of the International Sailing Federation that sanctions radio-controlled sailing competitions. It is authorised by ISAF to conduct up to three official World Championships each year.

World Sailing - Class World Championships

Classes that are members of World Sailing are entitled to hold World Championships if they are spread into a minimum of two continents and have certain number of nations and continents take part in two of the last three championships (the number of nations depend of the size of the equipment). [3]
