The IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship is the official competition for senior national Wheelchair handball teams of the world.

Contents

History

In 2013 was already held a Wheelchair Handball World Championship organised by Brazil. But not officially recognized by the IHF. Brazil won all categories. [1]

Since 2015 there exists the European Wheelchair Handball Nations’ Tournament.

On 26 October 2019 the first Meeting of IHF Wheelchair Handball Working Group was held. They planned the first Wheelchair Handball World Championship for 2021 during the 2021 World Women's Handball Championship. [2]

During the IHF Council Meeting No. 6 on 27 and 28 February 2020 in Cairo the IHF announced that there will be the first Wheelchair Handball World Championship already in 2020. The IHF will add Wheelchair handball for the 2028 Summer Paralympics. But one of the requirement is that there were two world championships until 2022. [3] [4]

The handball tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from 6 to 21 August at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park. The tournaments were won by Denmark in the men's competition and Russia for the women's tournament. The French teams for both competitions finished with the silver medal, and the bronze went to Germany and Norway, respectively.

IHF World Men's Outdoor Handball Championship was the world championship of field handball and was organized by the International Handball Federation (IHF) in the period 1948–1966. The first edition was organized by the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF) the predecessor of the IHF. In total, seven editions were held. West Germany and East Germany did not participate in the 1948 championship due to the end of World War II.

The 2021 IHF World Women's Handball Championship, the 25th event by the International Handball Federation, was held in Spain from 1 to 19 December 2021. On 18 October 2018, at a congress in Doha, Qatar, the IHF announced that the World Championship would be expanded from 24 teams to 32 teams from 2021 onwards.

The IHF Council is an institution of International Handball Federation. It is the main decision-making body of the organization in the intervals of IHF Congress. Its members are elected by the IHF Congress. The council is a non-executive, supervisory and strategic body that sets the vision for IHF and global handball.

The 2025 IHF World Men's Handball Championship, will be the 29th event hosted by the International Handball Federation. It will be held in Croatia, Denmark and Norway from 14 January to 2 February 2025. This edition marks the first time the world championship is being held in three countries.

The 2027 IHF World Men's Handball Championship, will be the 30th event hosted by the International Handball Federation. It will take place in Germany in January 2027.

The 2027 World Women's Handball Championship, the 28th event hosted by the International Handball Federation, will take place in Hungary in 2027. It will be the main qualifying event for the women's handball tournament of the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The 2023 IHF Men's U21 Handball World Championship was the 24th edition of the IHF Men's U21 Handball World Championship, held in Germany and Greece under the aegis of the International Handball Federation (IHF) from 20 June to 2 July 2023. It was the second time in history that the championship will be jointly organised by two countries, the first being in 1979.

The 2025 IHF Men's U21 Handball World Championship will be 25th edition of the IHF Men's U21 Handball World Championship to be held in Poland under the aegis of International Handball Federation (IHF). It will be first time in history that the championship will be organised by Poland Handball Federation.

The 2025 IHF World Women's Handball Championship will be 27th edition of the championship to be jointly hosted by Germany and the Netherlands under the aegis of International Handball Federation (IHF) from 27 November to 14 December 2025. It will be fourth time in history that the championship is jointly hosted. Catch the Dream will be the official motto of the competition.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 World Women's Handball Championship</span> 2023 edition of the World Womens Handball Championship

The 2023 IHF World Women's Handball Championship was the 26th edition of the championship, organised by the International Handball Federation (IHF) from 29 November to 17 December 2023 and jointly hosted by Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It was the third time in handball history that the championship is jointly hosted, the first in Sweden, and also the first to be played in three countries.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022 Wheelchair Handball World Championship</span> International handball competition

The 2022 IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship is the first edition of the tournament. It is being held in Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in the 6th of October City, Egypt from 22 to 25 September 2022.

The 2024 Wheelchair Handball World Championship will be a 4×4-wheelchair handball tournament held in Cairo, Egypt from 17 to 21 September 2024. The games will be played at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall.
