Handball has been a Central American Games event since 2001 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In addition to crowning the handball champions of the Central American Games, the tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The El Salvador national football team represents El Salvador in international football, and is governed by the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT).
The Guatemala national football team represents Guatemala in men's international football and is controlled by the Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala. Founded in 1919, it has been affiliated to FIFA since 1946, and it is a member of CONCACAF.
The Pan-American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) is the continental governing body for handball, beach handball, wheelchair handball and snow handball in Americas since 23 May 1977. PATHF includes North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. PATHF's primary functions is to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct Men's World Handball Championship and Women's World Handball Championship qualifying tournaments.
The International Handball Federation (IHF) is the administrative and controlling body for handball and beach handball. IHF is responsible for the organisation of handball's major international tournaments, notably the IHF World Men's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1938, and the IHF World Women's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1957.
The CONCACAF Under-20 Championship was expanded to 12 teams beginning in 2011. The tournament determined the four CONCACAF teams that participated at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in Colombia. In addition, the top three finishers from Central America or the Caribbean, in addition to hosts Mexico, qualified to participate at the 2011 Pan American Games. The Executive Committee approved that for men's U-20 championships all three North American teams again qualified automatically for the finals. Central America received four berths, and the Caribbean received five.
The Guatemala women's national football team is controlled by the Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala. They are one of the top women's national football teams in the Central American region along with Costa Rica, having won the 1999 UNCAF championship.

The 2014 Pan American Men's Handball Championship, was the 16th official competition for senior men's national handball teams of North, Center, Caribbean and South America. It was held from 23 to 29 June 2014 in Uruguay. It also acted as the qualifying competition for the 2015 World Men's Handball Championship, securing three vacancies for the World Championship.
Handball competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto will be held from July 16 to 25 at the Direct Energy Centre. Due to naming rights the arena will be known as the latter for the duration of the games. A total of eight men's and women's teams will compete in each respective tournament.

The football tournament at the 1986 Central American Games was held in Guatemala City, Guatemala from 4 to 10 January. El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua were invited to enter their U-21 teams to play in the tournament along with hosts Guatemala. The tournament also served as a qualification to the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The handball competition of the 2017 Central American Games in Managua was held from December 4 to 8 at the Instituto nicaraguense de deportes, in both the men's and women's tournament, three teams qualified for the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.
Handball competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, were held from July 24 to August 5. The venue for the competition is the Sports Centre Hall 1 located at the Videna cluster. The venue also hosted judo. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. This means a total of 224 athletes are competed.
Volleyball has been in the Central American Games event since the first inaugural edition in 1973 in Guatemala City, Guatemala Since then the volleyball competitions for both men and women was presented in all editions except the 2006 Central American Games Edition That was Cancelled at that time.
