Tornado World Championship

The Tornado World Championship are international sailing regattas in the Tornado class organized by the International Sailing Federation and the International Tornado class Association. [1]

Contents

For the original open event, the most titles have been won by Australian sailor Darren Bundock, with seven titles between 1998 and 2009 and another two bronze medals. The second most titles have been won by Australian John Forbes, who has won six world titles and came 2nd twice, 3rd three times and a fourth, fifth and a sixth. The highest number of championships have been won by Australian sailors, with twelve titles, followed by British sailors, with six titles, and sailors from Germany, who have won five titles.

Between 1968 and 1998, eight people had won the Tornado World Championship twice. In 1998 John Forbes was the first person to win the Championship three times.

The Tornado was an Olympic class from 1976 to 2008.

The first Tornado World Championship were held in Kiel in 1968.

The 29er is a two-person high performance sailing skiff designed by Julian Bethwaite and first produced in 1998. Derived from the Olympic class 49er class, it is raced in the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships. The 29er is able to reach high speeds fairly quickly by having a sleek and hydrodynamic hull and will often exceed the wind speed when planing both up and downwind.

David John Oliver Forbes OAM was an Australian sailor who competed for his country at three Olympics from 1968 to 1976. Forbes won an Olympic gold medal in the Star Class at Munich 1972 alongside John Anderson OAM. His sailing career spanned over 20 years and included a 5.5m World Championship in 1970, a Sydney to Hobart race in 1974, and ten Australian championships in the Star, 5.5m, Soling, and Etchells classes. He represented Australia at three Olympic Games – 1968 Mexico City, 1972 Munich, and 1976 Montreal, and was a member of two America’s Cup challenges. He was a part of the ‘Gretel II’ crew in the 1970 America’s Cup and was relief helmsman in the 1977 America’s Cup.

John Forbes is an Australian sailor and has competed at three Olympic Games, winning a bronze at Barcelona 1992 and silver in 2000 at the Sydney Games.

The 470 World Championships have been held every year since 1970 and organised by the International 470 Class Association and recognized by the International Sailing Federation. When the Championship forms part of the ISAF Sailing World Championships the ISAF also organise the event. The 470 is a sailboat class used as equipment for the Olympic Sailing Competition.

The Star World Championship are international sailing regattas in the Star class organized by the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association sanctioned by International Sailing Federation.

The Laser World Championship have been held every year since 1974, organized by the International Sailing Federation.

Europe World Championships are world sailing championships in the Europe class that have been held every year since 1966. Since 1978 the event is split into a women's and a men's event held (mostly) in conjunction. The event is organized by the International Europe Class Union and recognized by the International Sailing Federation.

The Star European Championships are international sailing regattas in the Star class. The championships are open to sailors of all nationalities.

The Flying Dutchman World Championship, also known as FD Worlds, are international sailing regattas in the Flying Dutchman class organized by the International Flying Dutchman Class Organization since 1956 and recognised by World Sailing.

The 5.5 Metre World Championship are international sailing regatta in the 5.5 Metre class organized by the host club and the International 5.5 Metre Class Association and recognized by the World Sailing.

The 6 Metre World Cup are biennial international sailing regattas in the 6 Metre class organized by the International Six Metre Association.

The Laser Radial World Championships have been held every year since 1989, organized by the International Sailing Federation. Laser Radial is an Olympic sailing class. The event was held together with the Women's Laser Radial World Championships between 1989 and 2010.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Soling North American Championship</span>

The Soling North American Championship is an International sailing regatta in the Soling organized by the International Soling Association under auspiciën of World Sailing. The initiative for this event was taken, inspired by the success of the Soling European Championship, by Milwaukee Yacht Club sailor Jack Van Dyke in 1969 to promote Soling sailing in the US and Canada. Since then over 50 Soling North American Championship were held. The popularity grew during the Olympic period of the Soling. After that era the event continued and is still reasonable successful. The Soling North American Championship is an "Open" event. This means that competitors from all over the world are eligible to enter. So far oversees entries have only won the Championship three times:
