ISAF Sailing Games were a sailing festival organised by the International Sailing Federation held every four years from 1994 to 2006.

History

Beginning in 1994, ISAF World Sailing Games were held on four occasions. The 1994 IYRU Cup saw more than 1000 sailors from 76 countries. [1] The events were match racing, 470 (men and women), Hobie 16 (open and women), women's J/22, J/24, men's Laser, women's Laser Radial. [2]

In 1998, ISAF hosted the 1998 ISAF World Sailing Games in women's match racing, 470 (men and women), Hobie 16 (open and women), J/22 (open and women), men's Laser and women's Laser Radial. [3]

For the 2002 event, the selected classes were 470 (men and women), Hobie 16 (open and women), women's J/22, J/80, men's Laser, women's Laser Radial, Techno 293 (open and women). [4] In the 2002 event, each country could have two sailors per event, with addition to the ISAF rankings leaders in Olympic classes, winners of the preceding 1998 games and winners of the 2000 Olympics. [5]

The 2006 ISAF World Sailing Games had 420 team racing, 470 (men and women), 49er, women's Hobie 16, Hobie Tiger, men's Laser, women's Laser Radial, and RS:X (men and women). [6] In the 2006 event, sailors from similar classes were invited to participate, e.g. the medalists from 2005 Finn Gold Cup and the world champions in Byte, Contender, and OK were invited to the men's one-person dinghy event in Laser. [7]

Enrique Figueroa Suárez, also known as "Quique Figueroa", is a Puerto Rican sailor. Figueroa is the only sailor of Puerto Rico to win four gold medals in the Central American-Caribbean Games. He has also competed at five Olympic Games, from 1988 to 2004 and in 2020. In 1999, Figueroa and his wife Carla Malatrasi won a gold medal in sailing in the Pan Am Hobie competition celebrated in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. On March 3, 2003 the Senate of Puerto Rico honored Enrique Figueroa and his wife Carla Malatrasi by recognizing their achievements.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Laser Radial</span> Olympic sailing class

The Laser Radial or ILCA 6 is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy, originally built by Laser Performance. It is a singlehanded boat, meaning that it is sailed by one person. The Laser Radial is a variant of the Laser Standard, with shorter mast and reduced sail area, allowing light sailors to sail in heavy winds. The International Class is recognised by World Sailing.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Commonwealth Sailing Championships</span> 2003 sailing competition in Melbourne, Australia

The inaugural Commonwealth Sailing Championships were held in Port Phillip, Melbourne in January 2003. Both the Commonwealth Games Federation and the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) approved the Inaugural Commonwealth Sailing Championships. The Championship venue was the Sandringham Yacht Club, which has also hosted the ISAF Grade 1 event.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sail Melbourne</span>

Sail Melbourne is an annual sailing Regatta run by Yachting Victoria at various yacht clubs around Port Phillip Bay. Sail Melbourne is a Grade 1 ISAF event.

Xu Lijia is a Chinese sailboat racer who won a bronze medal in women's Laser Radial class at the 2008 Summer Olympics and a gold medal in the same event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she was the flag bearer for China at the closing ceremony.

The 470 World Championships have been held every year since 1970 and organised by the club on behalf of the International 470 Class Association and recognized by World Sailing. When the Championship forms part of the ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The ILCA 4 World Championships, until 2020 the Laser 4.7 World Championships, have been held every year since 2002, organized by the International Sailing Federation. The event is open to sailors under the age of 18.

Joanna Ayela Aleh is a New Zealand sailor. She is a national champion, a former world champion, and an Olympic gold medallist.

Sailing at the 2015 Pacific Games was held at Port Moresby from 5–11 July 2015. The regatta was hosted by Royal Papua Yacht Club in Konedobu, with men's, women's and team events taking place on the Konebada course. Equipment classes were the Laser and Laser Radial dinghies, and the Hobie 16 catamaran.

The Women's ILCA 6 World Championship, until 2020 the Women's Laser Radial World Championship, has been held every year since 1980, organised by the International Sailing Federation. Laser Radial is an Olympic sailing class. The event was held together with the Men's Laser Radial World Championships between 1989 and 2010.

Sailing at the Pacific Games was first contested when the sport was added for the 1969 games at Port Moresby. It has also been included at several of the Pacific Mini Games, starting with the fifth edition held in American Samoa in 1997.

The 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games was held in Marseille, France, 29 July – 10 July.

The 1998 ISAF World Sailing Games was held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates 3–13 March.

The 2006 ISAF World Sailing Games was held at Lake Neusiedl, Austria 10–20 May.

Sailing competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru took place between August 3 and 10, 2019 at the Yacht Club Peruano in the city of Paracas.

Sailing at the 2019 Pacific Games was held in Samoa from 9–19 July on the Mulifanua sailing course at the Sheraton Samoa Beach Resort at Mulifanua  which is approximately 40 kilometres west of the capital, Apia. The competition schedule included men's, women's and team events. The equipment classes used were the Laser and Laser Radial dinghies, plus the Hobie 16 catamaran.
