History

Founded in 1886 in Lwów by Ksawery Liske as a local society, its scientific journal became theKwartalnik Historyczny, which was first published in 1887. [1] in 1924 it became a Poland-wide organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge and studies in history of Poland. [1] In 1939, PTH had 12 branches: Brest, Grodno, Katowice, Kielce, Kraków, Lublin, Lvov, Łódź, Poznań, Przemyśl, Warsaw, and Vilnius. [1] After World War II, the society was moved to Kraków on January 8, 1947, and to Warsaw on September 28 of that year. [1]

Historians living in exile in the west formed the Polish Historical Society in Great Britain on November 29, 1946, which was transformed into the Polish Historical Society in Exile in 1953. Its first long-term president was Marian Kukiel. [1]

In 1952 PTH had 14 branches: Białystok, Gdańsk, Katowice, Kielce, Kraków, Lublin, Łódź, Olsztyn, Poznań, Przemyśl, Toruń, Szczecin, Warsaw, and Wrocław. [1] The number grew to 36 in 1958. Since 1974 it has been organizing tournaments of historical knowledge and since 1980 has been organizing academic conferences at five-year intervals. It has 46 local chapters, 8 committees, and over 3,000 members. Since 2005, it has had a status of a public benefit organization under Polish law. [2]

The Polish Historical Society publishes several scientific journals such as Małopolskie Studia Historyczne, Rocznik Kaliski, Rocznik Łódzki, Rocznik Lubelski and Biuletyn Polskiego Towarzystwa Historycznego.

A voivodeship or voivodate is the area administered by a voivode (governor) in several countries of central and eastern Europe. Voivodeships have existed since medieval times and the area of extent of voivodeship resembles that of a duchy in western medieval states, much as the title of voivode was equivalent to that of a duke. In the summer of 1939, weeks ahead of the Nazi German and Soviet invasion of Poland the map of both Europe and Poland looked very different from today. The railway network of interwar Poland had little in common with the postwar reality of dramatically changing borders and political domination of the Soviet-style communism, as well as the pre-independence German, Austrian and Russian networks which the Second Polish Republic had partially inherited in 1918 after the end of World War I. The most important junctions in the Polish territory in summer of 1939 were:

In the Second Polish Republic, there was not a national, Second Division, as we know it today, although the creation of the second division was proposed on several occasions. On Sunday, 26 September 1937 in Częstochowa, a conference of regional teams from across the nation took place, to discuss the creation of the league. Officials of several clubs arrived, such as Brygada Częstochowa, Gryf Toruń, Śmigły Wilno, Rewera Stanisławów, Dąb Katowice, Unia Sosnowiec, Strzelec Janowa Dolina, and WKS Grodno. Also, invited were officials of HCP Poznań, Podgorze Kraków, Naprzód Lipiny and Union Touring Łódź, but for unknown reasons they did not show up. The officials talked about creation of a National B-League, but nothing came out of this project. Instead, in the years 1921-1939, several Voivodeships held their own games and those leagues were known as A-Classes. In 1927, the elite Polish Football League was created, which by the late 1930s consisted of 10 teams. The teams that did not make it to the Ekstraklasa, played in the A-Classes.
