Poor Boyz Productions is a North American entertainment company which specializes on Freeskiing, Wind surfing and Standup paddleboarding films. [1] The company was formed in 1994 by Johnny Decesare and is headquartered in Redondo Beach, California. In 2012 Poor Boyz began producing freeskiing videos in association with Red Bull Media House.

History

Poor Boyz Productions was founded in 1994 [2] by Johnny Decesare. Using an 8mm camera, Poor Boyz Productions first film, Fade to Black, was filmed over the next two years and released in 1996. [3]

The studio's next film, Degenerates featured the skiing of JP Auclair, J.F. Cusson and Mike Douglas. [4] Auclair appeared in ten of the company's films before his death in an avalanche in 2014. [5]

In 2005, Poor Boyz Productions began filming "The Windsurfing Movie". This movie included windsurfers Levi Siver, Jason Polakow, Kai Lenny and Robby Naish. "The Windsurfing Movie" premiered in Hollywood on July 15, 2008. [6] The company later released two more windsurfing films.

Poor Boyz Productions released freestyle ski movies every year until 2015. [7] The films have a variety of themes, including street skiing. [8] [9] Some of the skiers featured in Poor Boyz Productions films have won IF3 International Freeski Film Festival or Powder Awards, for their segments in Poor Boyz films.

In 2014 the company created films of two California stand up paddleboard surfing competitions, one of which aired on CBS Sports, [10] [11] and in 2015 made a stand up paddle surfing movie in Maui.

Seth Morrison is a professional skier. He has won many competitions and has appeared in a number of ski movies. He is best known for jumping off cliffs from extreme heights.

Shane McConkey was a professional skier and BASE jumper. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and eventually based himself in Olympic Valley, California. Due to an itinerant childhood, he never identified with a single place, but he was said to have come from Boulder, Colorado. It was from here that he started his professional skiing career. He did so after dropping out of the University of Colorado Boulder to pursue his dreams.

A ski film is a motion picture with sequences of expedition, recreation, competition, or acrobatic exhibition on snow skis. These non-fiction action sport films capture the experience of an athletic outdoor snow sporting culture. Ski films typically present one or more techniques, locations, or skiers. Categories include the feature, documentary of competition or other event coverage, instruction or technique demonstration, retrospective history, travel guide showcasing a region, or a short subject. More than 200 such videos debuted in 2006. Notable examples are listed at the Ski and Snowboard Film Institute, or have received awards from the International Ski Film Festival, X-Dance Action Sports Film Festival, IF3 International Freeski Film Festival, Newschoolers magazine, Cold Smoke Winter Film, Powder magazine, or similar.

David Crichton is a professional freestyle skier and former member of the Canadian National Development Ski Team for freestyle mogul skiing.

Dave Kalama is a big wave surfer/tow-in surfer, stand-up paddle (SUP) surfer and racer, surf and SUP board shaper, windsurfer, outrigger canoe racer, private adventure guide, and celebrity watersports enthusiast. Kalama, his wife, 2 sons and 1 daughter live in Kula, Maui.

Michael David Wilson is an American professional freeskier. Wilson is recognized as one of the leaders of the freeskiing movement, and is known for pushing the limits by hitting bigger jumps and doing bigger rotations than almost anybody else. In 2004, Wilson introduced the first off axis double-flipping rotation to skiing, revolutionizing freeskiing competition.

Charles Russell Johnson III was a professional skier and a pioneer in the freeskiing movement. He became a top competitor and a favorite in ski films and was known for his progression, fearlessness, and passion for skiing. Johnson died in 2010 in a ski accident.

The International Freesports Film Festival (iF3) is a film Festival dedicated to screening and rewarding freeskiing and snowboarding movies. Held annually at the end of October in Montreal, iF3 was created in 2007 by Félix Rioux, Doug Bishop and Jean-Francis Durocher. As it premieres the best movies of the past season, iF3 has been referred to as the "Cannes of the ski world!" by ESPN and won Quebec action sports Gala Maestro's event of the year in 2010.

Mark Abma is a professional freeskier from Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia. He has won numerous awards, including the Powder Video Award for Best Male Performance in 2007 and 2005. Abma was first known as a mogul and park skier, but moved on to the back country and heliskiing later in his career. He has been featured in many extreme skiing movies.

Alexis duPont is an American professional big mountain freeskier. She is a Freeskiing World Tour contender and former Junior Olympics competitor, who has been featured in several films such as Warren Miller’s Wintervention and Tracing Skylines. Her mother, freestyle skier Holley duPont, was one of the first women to land a backflip on skis.

Michelle Parker is a pro-skier from Truckee, California, US. She started skiing in her home resort Squaw Valley Ski Resort. At the age of 15, she started dedicating herself to freeskiing. She has subsequently competed in the U.S. Freeskiing open, X-games and Red Bull Cold Rush.

The Faction Collective is a Swiss ski equipment design company headquartered in Verbier, in the Swiss canton of Valais. Founded in Verbier in 2006 by a tight-knit group of freeride skiers, Faction now holds brand offices in Switzerland, United States, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Austria and China.
