Poornima Ramaswamy is an Indian fashion costume designer and entrepreneur. She won a National Film Award for her first film Paradesi (2013), and has continued to work in Indian cinema and stage. [1] [2]

Career

Poornima is related to the owners of fashion retail brand Naidu Hall, and initially began her career by working with the family business and designing outfits for friends. She completed a degree in business management and was interested in taking over the management of the group. After getting married, Poornima resettled in Erode, where she learnt more about handwoven sarees, which she was keen to pass on to Naidu Hall's collections. [3]

She became acquainted to Malar, the wife of director Bala, and through the connection, she gained the chance to work on her first film, Paradesi (2013). [4] The film depicted the tale of slave labourers in the Indian hill country from the 1930s, prompting Poornima to work on get the aesthetics correct. She subsequently won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for the film. [5] [6] [7]

After Paradesi, she was invited to work on a French film, Son épouse , directed by Michel Spinosa. [8] She has regularly worked with Jyothika since her comeback to Tamil films, collaborating with her in 36 Vayadhinile (2015), Magalir Mattum (2017) and Naachiyaar (2018). [9] She also notably worked on reimagining Madhavan's appearance in Irudhi Suttru (2006) and Rajkiran's look in Dhanush's Pa Paandi (2017). [4] She has pushed for the use of handloom fabric in films, often dressing the cast in organic cotton material. [10]

The film was based on novel Eriyum Panikadu, Tamil translation of the 1969 English novel Red Tea by Paul Harris Daniel and inspired from real life incidents that took place before independence in the 1930s. It was released on 15 March 2013. The dubbed version of Telugu was released with the same name. The film opened to highly positive reviews with critics mainly praising the performances of the cast and the direction of Bala. The movie was an average grosser at the box office

Irudhi Suttru is a 2016 Indian sports drama film written and directed by Sudha Kongara. Filmed simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, with the latter being titled as Saala Khadoos, the film stars R. Madhavan as boxing coach who is ignored by the boxing association, tries to accomplish his dream by training an amateur boxer, Madhi, played by Ritika Singh in her acting debut. Both the Tamil and Hindi versions are produced by S. Sashikanth for YNOT Studios and UTV Motion Pictures, while C. V. The film also features Vidharth and Lakshmi Manchu in supporting roles. It is a remake of the Hindi-language film Tumhari Sulu (2017). The film narrates the story of an ambitious housewife who becomes a radio jockey for a late-night relationship advice show. The film was released worldwide in November 2018. The film's title was taken from a song from Mozhi, which was also directed by Mohan and featuring Jyothika in the lead.
