The Port Tampa City Library is a library located in a historic bank building in the Port Tampa section of Tampa, Florida at 4902 W. Commerce Street. It is a neighborhood branch in the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System. [1]

History

A branch library building in the area was originally located at 8611 Interbay Boulevard and staffed by volunteers from the Woman's Club and Civic Association of Port Tampa City from 1951 until 1961, when Port Tampa City was annexed by the City of Tampa. The Tampa library system took over the library in 1962. [2] The original library building was demolished in 2006 due to asbestos and mold. [3]

New home

The current Neoclassical library building was built by James G. Yeats in 1926 and served as the First Bank of Port Tampa. It closed in 1933 after suffering through the stock market crash of 1929, and Mr. Yeats passed away in the same year. In the following years it housed a grocery store, a health clinic, a flight school, and a boutique. [4]

In 1993 the Women's Club began a funding drive to save the old bank building, which had been vacant for many years, after members noticed a demolition notice attached to it. By 1994 the building was made a historic landmark, and the Club eventually raised $5,000 to help save it. That money was given to the Friends of the Port Tampa City Library. In 1998 the 5,700-square-foot building reopened as the Port Tampa City Library, with a grand opening ceremony on June 14, 1998 — Flag Day — and the centennial of the embarkation from Port Tampa for Cuba bound troops in the Spanish–American War. The ceremony included a ceremonial "Passage of the Book", in which the very last book to be moved from the old building to the new one was passed along by community members until reaching its final destination. Design

The interior of the library includes marble and terrazzo floors; a cast plaster, coffered ceiling with egg-and-dart and dentil molding; custom made cherry cabinetry; and, on the second floor, a Maritime Reading Room. The outside has a marble base and glazed white terracotta tile, Ionic pilasters and panels with urns and floral decorations, and bronze doors set in bronze frames. Formerly outside the building were the Port Tampa City Benches, commissioned in 1998 through Hillsborough County's Public Art Program. The benches, fabricated by artist Susan B. Gott, consist of 28 kiln cast, multi-colored glass tiles set in steel and are now located on the second floor. [1]

Maritime Reading Room

After the library’s relocation into the Commerce Bank Building in 1998, the Maritime Reading Room was designed and opened as a display meant to “appeal to anyone with a passing, passionate, or professional interest in boats, sailing and the sea." [6] The room houses over 350 books. Subjects range from the folkloric to the encyclopedic, to the instructional and technical. In addition to books, a number of sea-related artifacts are displayed, including scale-models of ships, navigational equipment, and antique boat parts. Because Port Tampa had been an industrial port as well as a major stop on Henry B. Plant’s steamship line, the Port Tampa City Library was felt to be the most appropriate home for the collection. Events and Programs

Like other libraries in the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, the Port Tampa City Library hosts educational and entertaining programs throughout the year. Tampa Union Station (TUS) is a historic train station in Tampa, Florida. It was designed by Joseph F. Leitner and was opened on May 15, 1912, by the Tampa Union Station Company. Its original purpose was to combine passenger operations for the Atlantic Coast Line, the Seaboard Air Line and the Tampa Northern Railroad at a single site. The station is located at 601 North Nebraska Avenue.

The Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL) is a public library system based in Hillsborough County, Florida. THPL is part of two larger library networks, the Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative which includes Temple Terrace Public Library in Temple Terrace, Florida, and Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City, Florida. There are 25 branches of the Tampa–Hillsborough County Library System, not including digital-only and mobile-only services. On January 1, 2018 the library cooperative became one of the largest in the country to go fine free. Overdue fees for borrowed materials were eliminated with the implementation of the "Just Bring It Back" initiative. In 2019 the cooperative received the FLA Library of the Year Award. Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library was recognized for its community focused initiatives when it "reorganized its staffing model and eliminated overdue fines, yielding $1 million in savings while increasing access to library resources and expanding opportunities for community engagement through unique, scalable programs.

John F. Germany Public Library

John F. Germany Public Library is the flagship library of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL), as well as a member of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, and a member of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium.

Temple Terrace Public Library

The Temple Terrace Public Library serves 250,000 patrons a year with a selection of more than 100,000 volumes and 52 computers. It is the only library in the city of Temple Terrace, FL, and it is part of the Hillsborough County Library Cooperative, along with branches in Tampa, Florida and Plant City, Florida, like the John F. Germany Public Library. It is located near several colleges, including the University of South Florida and Florida College, as well as the Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa.

Maureen B. Gauzza Public Library

The Maureen B. Gauzza Public Library, formerly known as the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Public Library, is part of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL), as well as a member of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC). It is a 26,000 square foot facility located at 11211 Countryway Blvd. in Tampa, Florida. In addition to books, newspapers and magazines, the library provides DVDs, music, and internet access, as well as a variety of programs and activities and meeting rooms.

The C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Public Library, formerly known as the College Hill Branch Library, is in Tampa, Florida. The 8,500 sq. foot facility was renamed in 2011 for Florida Sentinel Bulletin owner and publisher C. Blythe Andrews. The library is located at 2607 E. Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd. It is part of the Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL), as well as a member of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC).

The Arthenia L. Joyner University Area Community Library is a member of the Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL) and the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC). It is a 15,000 square foot facility located adjacent to Muller Elementary Magnet School on 13619 North 22nd St. In addition to serving as a public library, the location also serves a partnership library with the Hillsborough County Public School system. The library doubles as a media center for the Mueller Elementary Magnet School during school hours and as a public library during all operating hours. In addition to books, the library offers a variety of meeting spaces, computers, technology instruction, literacy and family events.

New Tampa Regional Library Public library in Tampa, Florida

The New Tampa Regional Library is a 25,000 square foot public library located in the Hunter's Green area in north central Hillsborough County, Florida. It is a single-story building and the 19th facility in the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System. New Tampa Regional Library is located directly between Hunter's Green Elementary School and Benito Middle School.

Burgert Brothers Photographer duo

The Burgert Brothers were early photographers, most prominently known for documenting the growth of Tampa, Florida. Their photos span the late 1800s until the early 1960s. They depict times of war, natural disasters such as the 1921 Tampa Bay hurricane, economic booms, economic busts, transportation, building projects, bungalows, African American life, cigar factories, sponge docks, strawberry fields, mercantile businesses, banks, and service stations. They also feature Florida leisure activities at parks and beaches including golf, shuffleboard, checkers, and tennis. Thanks to the prolific Burgert Brothers local events and traditions like the Gasparilla Pirate Festival and Florida State Fair have been well-documented.
