Frans Hals the Elder was a Dutch Golden Age painter, normally of portraits, who lived and worked in Haarlem.

Jan Lievens was a Dutch Golden Age painter who was associated with his close contemporary Rembrandt, a year older, in the early parts of their careers. They shared a birthplace in Leiden, training with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, where they shared a studio for about five years until 1631. Like Rembrandt he painted both portraits and history paintings, but unlike him Lievens' career took him away from Amsterdam to London, Antwerp, The Hague and Berlin.

He wrote memoirs related to the Time of Troubles and created some of the earliest maps of Eastern Europe and Siberia. Due to Massa's experience in and knowledge of Russia, he was valued by the Dutch States-General as a counterweight to growing English influence in Russia in the early seventeenth century. The Isaac Massa Foundation was established in his honor in Groningen. It aims to stimulate scientific and cultural contacts between the Russian Federation and the Netherlands.

The Trippenhuis is a neoclassical canal mansion in the centre of Amsterdam. It was built in 1660–1662 for the wealthy Amsterdam weapons traders Louis and Hendrick Trip. Many references to weaponry can be seen on its facade. Since 1887 it has been the seat of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

Portrait of Stephan Geraedts, Husband of Isabella Coymans is an oil on canvas painting by Antwerp-born Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals. The painting was originally part of a couple of pendant wedding portraits. Hals probably painted the present portrait, Stephanus Geraerdts', alderman in Haarlem, and the accompanying portrait of the latter's wife Isabella Coymans around 1650-1652, six or seven years after their marriage in 1644. Isabella's portrait is now in a private collection in Paris.
