Posidonia australis seagrass meadows of the Manning-Hawkesbury ecoregion is an endangered ecological community, listed under the EPBC Act of the Commonwealth of Australia on 7 May 2015 [1]

Description

The ecological community is "the assemblage of plants, animals and micro-organisms associated with seagrass meadows dominated by Posidonia australis occurring in the warm temperate Manning Shelf and Hawkesbury Shelf bioregions on the east coast of Australia." [2] It occurs subtidal waters at depths from less than 1 m to 10m within the sheltered environments of estuaries on the coastline from Wallis Lake to Port Hacking. [2] It is found on sand and silty mud and in these estuarine waters the salinity is close to marine levels. [2]

The meadows of the community occur as both monospecific meadows (of P. australis) or as multispecies meadows (with, for example, P. australis together with Zostera muelleri subsp. capricorni, Halophila ovalis ). The macrophyte, Ruppia, may also be found growing within the ecological community (Creese et al., 2009). The leaves of Posidonia australis provide a place for many benthic flora, including epiphytes, to grow. These epiphytes photosynthesise and their proportion within the meadows is largely dependant on the nutrients available in the water. [2]

Fauna found within the shelter of the meadows include: protozoans, bacteria, harpacticoid copepods,ostracods, nematodes, polychaetes, bivalves, amphipods, cumaceans, holothurians, phoronids, rotifers, isopods; small decapods, gastropods, pycnogonids, echinoderms, nemerteans, hydroids, bryozoans, sponges; ascidians; serpulid polychaetes, and fish. The Eunicid anatomy typically consists of a pair of appendages near the mouth (mandibles) and complex sets of muscular structures on the head (maxillae) in an eversible pharynx. One of the most conspicuous of the eunicids is the giant, dark-purple, iridescent "Bobbit worm", a bristle worm found at low tide under boulders on southern Australian shores. Its robust, muscular body can be as long as 2 m. Eunicidae jaws are known from as far back as Ordovician sediments. Cultural tradition surrounds Palola worm reproductive cycles in the South Pacific Islands. Eunicidae are economically valuable as bait in both recreational and commercial fishing. Commercial bait-farming of Eunicidae can have adverse ecological impacts. Bait-farming can deplete worm and associated fauna population numbers, damage local intertidal environments and introduce alien species to local aquatic ecosystems.

The western trumpeter whiting, Sillago burrus, is a species of marine fish of the smelt whiting family Sillaginidae that is commonly found along the northern coast of Australia and in southern Indonesia and New Guinea. As its name suggests, it is closely related to and resembles the trumpeter whiting which inhabits the east coast of Australia and is distinguishable by swim bladder morphology alone. The species inhabits a variety of sandy, silty and muddy substrates in depths from 0 to 15 m deep, with older fish inhabiting deeper waters. Western trumpeter whiting are benthic carnivores which take predominantly crustaceans and polychaetes as prey. The species reaches sexual maturity at the end of its first year of age, spawning in batches between December and February. The species is taken as bycatch with other species of whiting and shrimps in Australia.

The variety of habitats along its western and southern coasts is often soft sands in shallow subtropical waters, ideal for these plants.

Beaches in estuaries and bays (BEBs) refer to beaches that exist inside estuaries or bays and therefore are partially or fully sheltered from ocean wind waves, which are a typical source of energy to build beaches. Beaches located inside harbours and lagoons are also considered BEBs. BEBs can be unvegetated or partially unvegetated and can be made of sand, gravel or shells. As a consequence of the sheltering, the importance of other sources of wave energy, including locally generated wind waves and infragravity waves, may be more important for BEBs than for those beaches on the open coast. Boat wakes, currents driven by tides, and river inflow can also be important for BEBs.
