The Border Security Force (BSF) is India's border guarding organisation on its borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of India, and was raised in the wake of the 1965 war on December 1 1965, "for ensuring the security of the borders of India and for matters connected there with".

On 25 May 2013, Naxalite insurgents of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) attacked a convoy of Indian National Congress leaders in the Jhiram Ghati, Darbha Valley in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, India. The attack caused at least 27 deaths, including that of former state minister Mahendra Karma and Chhattisgarh Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel. Director General (DG) is the head of the Indian National Security Guard (NSG), the federal contingency deployment force that was created to deal with terrorism in India. The DG is selected by the Home Minister (MHA). In the first thirty-one years since its creation in 1984, the NSG has had twenty-eight DGs, with an average tenure of one year and few months. All the selected DGs have been officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS).
R. Nataraj, I.P.S. is a retired Indian Police Service officer, who also served as the former chairman of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. He is known for his public service career that spans over four decades, that further continued after his retirement as Director General of Police in 2011. He belongs to the 1975 officer's batch and has served in various state and central government capacities. Furthermore, he has been a part of the Central Reserve Police Force and has served in the difficult areas of North-East and Jammu and Kashmir. He was the first secretary of the Indian High Commission in Kathmandu from 1986 to 1990.
On 13 March 2018, at least nine Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and six others were injured when Maoists blew up a mine-protected vehicle with an IED in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, India.
Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar is a retired Indian Police Service-1983 batch officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Served in different capacities in the various state and central law enforcement organisations, Bhatnagar received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service on 15 August 2007. He served as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in his last tenure of service till his retirement on 31 December 2019. He was appointed an advisor to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir G. C. Murmu by the Government of India in January 2020.
Surjeet Singh Deswal also known as S S Deswal is an Indian Police Service officer of 1984 batch, who worked as the Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and retired from same post on 31 August 2021 the India's primary border guarding organization ofIndo-China International Borders, since his appointment on 31 October 2018 with additional charge of Border Security Force,. He is a 1984 batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre. He previously served as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
