Pratap Bhanu Mehta (born 1967) is an Indian academician. He was the president of the Centre for Policy Research,a New Delhi-based think tank [1] and was the Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka University from July 2017 to July 2019. [2]
Pratap was born in a Rajasthani Jain family in Jodhpur. [3] His initial schooling was at the St. Edwards School in Shimla and St. Xaviers,Jaipur. [4] Mehta obtained a B.A. from St John's College,Oxford in Philosophy,Politics and Economics (PPE) and a Ph.D in Politics from Princeton University.
Mehta has held several teaching positions. He was a professor at NYU School of Law,a Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard University,Associate Professor of Government and of Social Studies at Harvard,and for a brief period,Professor of Philosophy and of Law and Governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University. [5] He was Member-Convenor of the Prime Minister of India's National Knowledge Commission,Member of the Supreme Court appointed Lyngdoh Committee on elections in Indian Universities,and has contributed to a number of reports for leading Government of India and International Agencies. He was on the Board of Governors of International Development Research Centre. He was Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum's Council on Global Governance. He has also served on the Board of NIPFP,NCAER and NIID. He is on the editorial board of journals such as the American Political Science Review and Journal of Democracy. [6] He received the 2010 Malcolm Adiseshiah Award [7] and the 2011 Infosys Prize for Social Sciences (Political Science and International Relations). [8] He also served on the Social Sciences jury for the Infosys Prize in 2017.
Mehta has published widely in the fields of political theory,intellectual history,constitutional law, [9] politics and society in India and international politics. [10] His scholarly articles have appeared in leading international referred journals in the field,as well as numerous edited volumes. His early work was on eighteenth century thought,particularly on Adam Smith and the Making of the Enlightenment. [11] Mehta is an editorial consultant to leading national daily Indian Express,and his columns have appeared in dailies including the Financial Times,the Telegraph,the International Herald Tribune,and the Hindu. He is also on the editorial boards of many academic journals,including the American Political Science Review,the Journal of Democracy,and India and Global Affairs. [12]
Mehta resigned from the National Knowledge Commission in 2006 in protest against the UPA government's Higher Education Policies. [13]
Mehta also resigned from the Executive Committee of the prestigious Nehru Memorial Museum &Library in 2016 to protest the appointment of a politically-connected bureaucrat as director. He cited discomfort at being complicit in what he considered was the marginalisation of academic considerations by the government in making the appointment. Mr Mehta also believes that reading news from authentic sources is the need of the hour especially when the youth of the nation is using websites such as Wikipedia to gain information and form an opinion,especially when misinformation and disinformation is on the rise. [14]
From 2017 to 2019,he was the Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka University,a position from where he resigned citing academic reasons. [15] He resigned from Ashoka University as a professor in March 2021,when trustees Pramath Raj Sinha and Ashish Dhawan are said to have told Mehta that "his intellectual interventions were something they could no longer protect.". [16] The circumstances of Mehta's resignation also led to protests across Ashoka University,which involved student-led class boycotts. The students also demanded the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Malabika Sarkar unless the administration offered Mehta his job back. [17]
A. K. Shiva Kumar,is a development economist,policy advisor,and evaluator,who has over the past 40 years,taught economics,undertaken evaluations,conducted research and policy analysis,worked closely with governments,international agencies,and civil society organisations to advocate for changes in public policy and legislation. He teaches various courses at Harvard University,Indian School of Business,BITS School of Management,Young India Fellowship,S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research and Ashoka University. He is a board member of the Global Partnership to End Violence against Children,co-chair of Know in Violence in Childhood,and a member of the leadership councils of both the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and Global Women's Institute,The George Washington University,Washington DC. In addition to serving as a senior policy adviser UNICEF –India (1992-2017),he was a member of India's National Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India,constituted by the Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The council was set up in June 2004 to oversee the implementation of India's National Common Minimum Programme.

He was formerly the Opinions Editor for The Telegraph newspaper,Kolkata and the Chancellor for Ashoka University,where he also serves as Professor of History. He was the founding Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka when the University began in 2014 and was succeeded in 2017 by Pratap Bhanu Mehta.
Upinder Singh is an Indian historian who is Professor of History and Dean of Faculty at Ashoka University. She is the former head of the History Department at the University of Delhi. She is also the recipient of the inaugural Infosys Prize in the category of Social Sciences (History).

He has taught Environmental Studies and History at Ashoka University and Krea University,and served as the Vice Chancellor of Krea University. He appears frequently on Indian television as a political analyst. He is also a columnist in the print media writing on wildlife conservation,political and environmental issues. In 2010,he chaired the Elephant Task Force (Gajah) of the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Task Force was formed to formulate measures for the protection of elephants in India.
Sunil Khilnani is a professor of politics and history at Ashoka University,India. Previously,he was a professor of politics and the Director of the King's College London India Institute. He is a scholar of Indian history and politics best known as the author of The Idea of India (1997). He was the presenter of a BBC Radio 4 series entitled Incarnations:India in 50 Lives,which was later published as a book in 2016. He was a 2010 Berlin Prize Fellow,and he was also a recipient of the Indian government's 2005 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award.

Malabika Sarkar is an Indian academic,former Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka University,and a former Vice Chancellor of Presidency University,Kolkata. She was the first Dean of Faculty &Research at Ashoka and was the Principal Academic Advisor before succeeding Pratap Bhanu Mehta to become the 3rd Vice-Chancellor. She is a professor of English Literature and specializes in John Milton,with an added interest in the History of Science. Her book Cosmos and Character in Paradise Lost was published by Palgrave Macmillan in June 2012. She handed over the charge of Vice-Chancellorship of Ashoka University to Indian Astrophysicist Somak Raychaudhury on 1st January 2023. During her tenure,Sarkar made several appearances in the media,writing op-eds and giving one-on-one interviews to key publications. In particular,she took up the cause of women and batted for leadership roles for women in academia,becoming a national voice opining the same. In doing so,she helped enhance Ashoka's reputation on the national stage.

Amita Baviskar is a sociologist and Professor of Environmental Studies and Sociology &Anthropology at Ashoka University,India. Previously,she was Professor at the Sociology Unit,Institute of Economic Growth,Delhi,India. She received the 2005 Malcolm Adiseshiah Award for Distinguished Contributions to Development Studies,the 2008 VKRV Rao Prize for Social Science Research and,in 2010,was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences –Sociology in recognition of her analysis of social and environmental movements in modern India. Baviskar studies the cultural politics of environment and development in rural and urban India.
Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality:Sri Ramakrishna &Cross-Cultural Philosophy of Religion is a book by Ayon Maharaj on Sri Ramakrishna and the philosophy of religion. The book was published in the US and UK in 2018 in hardcover. An Indian hardcover edition was published in 2019. The book has been reviewed in professional and popular journals,and in 2021 was the focus of a fourteen-article book symposium in the International Journal of Hindu Studies.
