Career

He belongs to new-age indie filmmakers from Kerala. [1] Active in filmmaking since 2010, he has conducted workshops in cinematography and filmmaking at the K. R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, the National Institute of Technology Calicut and at Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University. He is also the founder of the Light Source Photographic Society and the Minimal Cinema [2] film commune, and a director of the New Wave Film School.

Oru Rathri Oru Pakal (A day, a night), [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] a Malayalam film written, cinematographed, and directed by Prathap Joseph, had its Indian premiere in Dec 2019 at the 3rd edition of the Kazhcha-Niv Independent Film Festival (KNIFF). [8] Oru Rathri Oru Pakal was nominated for Pune International Film Festival. [9] [10] In January 2020, the film took a 'non-theatrical distribution' route, releasing at the Open Screen. [11]

Mahalakshmi Menon, best known by her stagename Shobha, was an Indian actress best known for her work in Malayalam and Tamil films. At the age of 17, she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1979 Tamil film Pasi. She also received three Kerala State Film Awards: for Best Actress (1978), Best Supporting Actress (1977) and Best Child Artist (1971); and two Filmfare Awards South for Best Actress in Kannada (1978) and Tamil (1979) films. Considered one of the finest talents to have emerged in the Indian film world, her promising career was unexpectedly cut short as she committed suicide in 1980, due to unknown reasons. Her popularity resulted in considerable public scrutiny of the events that led to her death and also various conspiracy theories. The 1983 Malayalam film Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback is supposedly based on her life and death.

Girish Puthenchery (1961–2010) was a noted malayalam Lyricist, Poet, Scriptwriter and Screenwriter. He was always referred to as the aristocratic lyricist of malayalam who had a distinctive writing style of his own. He also served as the director of Indian Performance Rights Society Malayalam division (I.P.R.S) and governing council member of the Kerala Kalamandalam and Kerala Lalithakala Academy. He debuted with the movie Enquiry in 1989. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyricist seven times. He also holds the record for writing the highest number of songs in the malayalam film industry within the briefest period of time. He died on 10 february 2010 in a private hospital in kozhikode.

K. Ramachandra Babu was an Indian cinematographer of over 125 films, out of which most are Malayalam films. He also worked for films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Arabic and English languages. He served as the cinematographer for several documentaries and advertisement films as well. He was the founder of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC).

The Kerala State Film Award for Best Director is an honour presented annually at the Kerala State Film Awards of India since 1969. It is given to a film director who has exhibited outstanding direction while working in the Malayalam film industry. Until 1997, the awards were managed directly by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala. Since 1998, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, an autonomous non-profit organisation functioning under the Department of Cultural Affairs, has been exercising control over the awards. The recipients are decided by an independent jury formed by the academy. They are declared by the Minister for Cultural Affairs and are presented by the Chief Minister.

Kazhcha Chalachithra Vedi or Kazhcha Film Forum is a film collective in Kerala, India. It started in the year 2001 at Neyyattinkara thaluk in Thiruvananthapuram district as a collective effort of film lovers. It has produced three short films. In the year 2013 the film society has been registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955.

Holy Wound is a 2022 Malayalam silent film directed by Asok. R. Nath and written by Paul Wiclif. Janaki Sudheer, Amrita Vinod, Sabu Praudeen play lead roles. The film was produced by Sandeep. R for Sahasrara Cinemas. The music was by Marakkar composer Ronnie Raphael. Holy Wound explores bold themes related to lesbianism, which is unusual in Malayalam Cinema. The film was released through direct OTT on 12 August 2022.

Nalla Nilavulla Rathri is a 2023 Indian Malayalam-language action-drama thriller film directed by Murphy Devasy. It stars Baburaj, Chemban Vinod Jose, Jinu Joseph, and Binu Pappu in the lead roles. Rony David, Sajin Cherukayil, Ganapathi S. Poduval, and Nithin George play key roles. The film's script is written by Murphy Devasy, while the screenplay and dialogue are co-written by Murphy Devasy and Praful Suresh. It is jointly produced by Sandra Thomas and her spouse, Wilson Thomas, under the banner of Sandra Thomas Productions.
