President Snakes is the fourth album from the nerd-folk duo The Doubleclicks, released on August 11, 2015. The album was funded via Kickstarter with a goal of $30,000. The goal was achieved within the first few days of the campaign's launch. [1] [2] It exceeded this and raised $55,535, on June 2, 2015. [3]

Nerd-folk is a musical genre that features humorous original songs involving geeky topics performed in a folk style. Angela and Aubrey Webber of The Doubleclicks credit Marian Call and others with creating the genre. The genre is related to other nerd music genres nerdcore and geek rock.

The Doubleclicks nerd-folk musical duo

The Doubleclicks are a nerd-folk musical duo based in Portland, Oregon, consisting of siblings Laser Malena-Webber and Aubrey Turner. They first became known for performing nerd-friendly comedy music, including songs about Dungeons & Dragons, dinosaurs, and other geeky themes. While their later songs retain those elements, there has been a stronger focus on feminist and other social issues, and more personal themes.

Production

In May 7, 2015, The Doubleclicks sought funding for the album via the crowd-funding site Kickstarter, asking for $30,000. [1] In June 2, 2015, the Kickstarter campaign ended with $55,535 from 1,282 backers. [4] Kickstarter rewards include a coloring book and a tabletop role-playing game called Fiasco. [1] In an interview with OregonLive.com 's David Greenwald, Laser Malena-Webber says "[i]t's the most honest and personal stuff we've put out, it's not all funny and it's not all nerdy." [3]

OregonLive.com is a website covering local news in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The website serves as the online home of The Oregonian. Started in 1997, it is owned by Advance Publications, which also owns The Oregonian. Tour

In October 17, 2015, The Doubleclicks performed at Zappcon in Fresno, California. [5] In August 16, 2016, it was announced that both The Doubleclicks and Lucia Fasano would begin their tour Snakes On The Radio in the cities Santa Clara, California, Oakland, California, Burbank, California, West Hollywood, California, and Portland, Oregon. [6] The Doubleclicks said they would play both their old songs and newer songs from their latest album President Snakes. Lucia Fasano would play songs from their debut album Radio Silence. Santa Clara is a city in Santa Clara County, California. The city's population was 116,468 as of the 2010 United States Census, making it the ninth-most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area. Located on the southern coast of San Francisco Bay immediately west of San Jose and 45 miles (72 km) southeast of San Francisco, the city was founded in 1777 with the establishment of Mission Santa Clara de Asís, the eighth of 21 California missions. The city was later incorporated in 1852. The mission, the city, and the county are all named for Saint Clare of Assisi.

Reception

In anticipation of the new album, many publications wrote favorably of the band. GeekDad 's Jonathan H. Liu stated "[t]he Doubleclicks are a GeekDad favorite." [2] The Mary Sue's Teresa Jusino said "[w]e love the geek girl sounds of The Doubleclicks, and we know you do, too!" [19] Portland Tribune 's Pamplin Media Group has called their music "funny, sweet and insightful songs about dinosaurs, cats, Netflix, space and the Dungeons and Dragons game." [4]

In September 12, 2015, President Snakes debuted at #4 on Billboard 's Comedy Albums chart and moved to #2 the following week. [20]

Armello is a digital role-playing strategy board game developed by Australian independent game studio League of Geeks as their debut project. First announced as an iPad title in September 2012, the game has been in development since mid-2011, with music by composers Lisa Gerrard and Michael Allen. Between April and May 2014, a successful Kickstarter campaign was created to help fund a port to Steam and GOG.com, as well as stretch goals to bring the game to Android and Windows tablets. Geek rock is a musical subgenre derived from alternative rock within the nerd music group. It is a sister-genre to the chiptune-influenced rock subgenre nintendocore and related to other branches of nerd music such as hip hop's nerdcore and contemporary folk's nerd-folk. Geek rock is characterised by the standard instruments of rock music often combined with electronic and unusual instruments; references to geek culture and specialised, yet often mundane, interests; and an element of humour. Specific subgenres of geek rock range from those related to elements of geek culture, such as the Harry Potter-based wizard rock, and those related to elements of rock music, such as the punk rock variant called nerd punk.

"Nothing to Prove" is a feminist nerd-folk song by The Doubleclicks released on their second album Lasers and Feelings. It is a response to the misogynist concept of the "fake geek girl" and the subsequent bullying and gatekeeping prevalent within the geek community. The Doubleclicks released a crowd-sourced music video, featuring segments filmed by women within the geek community, that went viral and received over a million views.

Critical Role is an American web series in which a group of professional voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons. The series is broadcast live on Thursdays at 19:00 PT on the Critical Role Twitch channel, with the video on demand (VOD) being available to Twitch subscribers immediately after the broadcast. On the Monday following the live stream, the VODs are made available for the public on Critical Role's website and uploaded to their YouTube channel. The show started streaming in 2015, part way through the first campaign. Beginning January 2018, the cast are playing through their second on-air campaign.
