Primetime was a pay-per-view TV channel which broadcasts to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The channel was available on Sky channel 498 and through Virgin Media's On Demand service. Primetime also offered live streams via their website.

History

Super Six World Boxing Classic

Primetime was launched in 2009 with the Super Six World Boxing Classic. The first fight broadcast was a double bill of Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor and Carl Froch vs Andre Dirrell live from the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham on 17 October 2009. [1] A few viewers experienced technical difficulties on this first event and as such there were some customer complaints. Primetime went on to show all of the group stage one and group stage two events from the Super Six World Boxing Classic including Froch vs Kessler on 24 April 2010. This fight was nearly cancelled due to the Icelandic ash cloud. [2]

Klitschko brothers

Through 2012 Primetime broadcast fights from both Klitschko brothers including Wladimir Klitschko vs Eddie Chambers on 20 March 2010 [3] and Vitali Klitschko vs Shannon Briggs on 16 October 2010.[ citation needed ]

Golden Boy Promotions

On 16 April 2011, Primetime broadcast Amir Khan vs. Paul McCloskey. [4] This began a relationship with Golden Boy Promotions and lead to the channel showing Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah [5] and Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz.

Other promotion deals

Towards the end of 2011 Primetime also started working with Top Rank showing Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Márquez for their third battle. Primetime continued their relationship with Top Rank by showing the Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley on 9 June 2012. [6] Primetime broadcast the comeback fight of Ricky Hatton on 24 November 2012, providing the UK broadcast as well as providing the world feed of the event. Primetime previously broadcast live Polish Ekstraklasa football matches in a deal with Sports Tonight Live. [7]

Closure

Primetime closed on 21 December 2013, just 4 days before Christmas Day. Its license was transferred to the American religious broadcaster SonLife.

As an amateur, Mayweather won a bronze medal in the featherweight division at the 1996 Olympics, three U.S. Golden Gloves championships, and the U.S. national championship at featherweight.

The cable television network ESPN has occasionally broadcast boxing events over the majority of its history, as part of several arrangements, including contracts with specific promotions and consortiums such as Golden Boy Promotions, Premier Boxing Champions, and Top Rank, as well as Friday Night Fights—a semi-regular series that was broadcast by ESPN and ESPN2 from 1998 through 2015.

The Ring magazine was established in 1922 and has named a Knockout of the Year since 1989, based on the magazine's writers' criteria.

Andre Dirrell is an American professional boxer who held the IBF interim super middleweight title from 2017 to 2018. As an amateur, he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2004 Olympics. His younger brother Anthony Dirrell is also a professional boxer.

Carl Froch English boxer

Carl Martin Froch, is a British former professional boxer who competed from 2002 to 2014, and has since worked as a boxing analyst and commentator. He held multiple super-middleweight world championships, including the WBC title twice between 2008 and 2011, the IBF title from 2012 to 2015, and the WBA (Unified) title from 2013 to 2015. At regional level he held the British, Commonwealth, and English super-middleweight titles, and won the Lonsdale Belt in 2006. As an amateur in the middleweight division, Froch won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships, and the ABA title twice.

Showtime Championship Boxing is a television boxing program airing on Showtime. Debuting in March 1986, it is broadcast live on the first Saturday of every month. Showtime Championship Boxing, which is very similar to HBO World Championship Boxing, features Mauro Ranallo on play-by-play, Al Bernstein as the color analyst, Jimmy Lennon as ring announcers, and Jim Gray as reporter.

Kenny Bayless is an American boxing referee from Nevada. He is best known for having refereed many of the sport's most well-known fights.

Super Six World Boxing Classic Boxing competitions

The Super Six World Boxing Classic was a professional boxing tournament organized by the Showtime television network in co-operation with Sauerland Event. The tournament was held from 2009 to 2011, with all fights being contested in the super middleweight division. The winner of the tournament, Andre Ward, unified the WBA, WBC and The Ring Super Middleweight titles.

Boxing in the 2010s includes notable events about boxing which occurred during the decade of the years 2010 to 2019. The decade saw high intensity action in the welterweight division. The match between veterans Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao broke PPV records. The broadcast of the fight in the Philippines was watched by nearly half the country's households. Mayweather retired at a record 50-0-0 while Pacquiao became the first eight division champion. The middleweight division saw immense action in the later years of the decade. After a draw in 2017, Canelo Alvarez ended Gennady Golovkin's long reign in 2018. The heavyweight division was dominated by Klitschko brothers before Wladimir's loss to Tyson Fury in 2015. Other talents that emerged were Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksander Usyk.

Andre Ward vs. Arthur Abraham Boxing competition

Andre Ward vs. Arthur Abraham was a Super Middleweight championship fight for the WBA Middleweight championship. The bout was held on May 14, 2011, at Home Depot Center, in Carson, California and was televised on Showtime. In the co-featured non-televised portion of the card, heavyweight world contender Cristobal Arreola took on Nagy Aguilera of the Dominican Republic.

Carl Froch vs. Glen Johnson Boxing competition

Carl Froch vs. Glen Johnson was a championship fight for the WBC Super Middleweight championship. The winner of the bout went on to the Finals of the Super Six World Boxing Classic and face WBA Champion Andre Ward, after his decision win over Arthur Abraham in May 2011. It was held on June 4, 2011, at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States, and televised on Showtime.

Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah, billed as "'Attack & Conquer", was a professional boxing match contested on July 23, 2011 for the WBA (Super) and IBF light welterweight championship.

Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko Boxing competition

Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko was a professional boxing match contested between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko. The event took place on 29 April 2017 at Wembley Stadium in London, England, with Joshua's IBF and the vacant WBA (Super) and IBO heavyweight titles on the line. Joshua, 27, won the match via technical knockout (TKO) in the eleventh round with 90,000 fans in attendance. Klitschko, 41, announced his retirement from boxing a few months after the fight. The bout was named Fight of the Year by The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn 2017 boxing match

Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn, billed as the Battle of Brisbane, was a boxing match for the WBO welterweight championship. The event took place on July 2, 2017 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. Horn won the fight by unanimous decision and claimed his first world title in boxing.
