Priya Jhingan is an Indian Army officer and Lady Cadet No 1 and silver medalist from the first batch of 25 lady officers who were commissioned in the Indian Army in 1993. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Being the daughter of a police officer, Priya initially wanted to join the Indian Police Service but decided to write to the then Chief of Army Staff General Sunith Francis Rodrigues to allow her to join the army. [1] Her request was accepted in 1992 for training at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. She started her military training from 21 September 1992 along with 24 other lady cadets. She graduated as the Silver Medallist of the First Women's Course on 6 March 1993 [1] [3] Her request to join an infantry battalion was rejected by the army as there were no such provisions for the same . Also being a law graduate, she joined Corps of Judge Advocate General. [1] After ten years of distinguished service at Judge Advocate General Department where she conducted numerous Court Martial, Major Priya was released in 2003 as per the contract of service Major. [1] Priya has always been a strong advocate for women being given equal roles as men in the Indian Army . She defended the women in Indian Army as a right over the controversial suicide of Lieutenant Sushmita Chakravarty in which the then Vice-Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman had to apologize for an insensitive remark about women in the army. [6] Post release from the Indian Army, she always advocated permanent commission and giving command of units to women officers in Indian Army. Her views were published in The Times of India on 17 Feb 2020 and taken note of by decision makers. The Supreme Court of India passed a ruling granting equal opportunities to women to command units in the Indian Army in February 2020, 17 years after she was released from the Army.
After retirement, Major Priya cleared the Haryana Judicial Services but decided against joining the Judicial Service. She then completed a Bachelor's in Journalism and Mass Communication and took up editing a weekly, Sikkim Express , in Gangtok. In 2013, she was one of the participants of Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 1. [7] In 2013 she joined Lawrence School, Sanawar as an English teacher [8] and a House Mistress. [9] Priya Jhingan is married to Lieutenant Colonel Manoj Malhotra who runs an adventure sports company named Pep Turf . The couple live in Chandigarh, India and have one son, Aryaman. [6] [10] In August 2020, she along with seven female students and a female teacher of The Lawrence School scaled Mount Kilimanjaro —the highest mountain in Africa, with its summit about 4,900 metre (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metre (19,341 ft) above sea level. In Feb 2018, Major Priya Jhingan was felicitated by the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, for being the pioneer of women in the Indian Army amongst 112 other prominent women in various fields in India.
A cadet is an officer trainee or candidate. The term is frequently used to refer to those training to become an officer in the military or maritime sector, often a person who is a junior trainee. Its meaning may vary between countries which can include youths in voluntary youth organisations.
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis as a Tri-Services Organisation, comprising the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, engaged in developing the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The soldier youth foundation in India is a voluntary organization which recruits cadets from high schools, higher secondary, colleges and universities all over India. The cadets are given basic military training in small arms and drill. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military service once they complete their course.

The Indian Military Academy (IMA) is one of the oldest military academies in India, and trains officers for the Indian Army. Located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, it was established in 1932 following a recommendation by a military committee set up under the chairmanship of General Sir Philip Chetwode. From a class of 40 male cadets in 1932, IMA now has a sanctioned capacity of 1,650. Cadets undergo a training course varying between 3 and 16 months depending on entry criteria. On completion of the course at IMA cadets are permanently commissioned into the army as Lieutenants.

Pakistan Military Academy, also referred to by its acronym PMA, is an officers training centre located near Kakol village in the city and district of Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Established in October 1947, it is the sole service academy in Pakistan tasked with training cadets to serve as army officers. For educational training, the institution is accredited by NUST.

The Sri Lanka Military Academy, commonly known simply as Diyatalawa, is the Sri Lanka Army's training centre where officer cadets are trained for getting commission. It is located in the garrison town of Diyatalawa in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. All Sri Lanka Army officer cadets, including army cadets of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, are trained at SLMA. Although not a university, SLMA is affiliated to the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University to provide its cadets of regular long course a degree in military studies.
The Officers Training Academy (OTA) is a training establishment of the Indian Army that trains officers for the Short Service Commission (SSC). The 49-week course at the OTA prepares graduates for all branches of the Army, except for the Army Medical Corps. Established in 1963, the first academy is located in Alandur, a southern neighbourhood of Chennai. OTA chennai has an impressive tally of gallantry award including 1 Param Vir Chakra, 8 Ashoka Chakra, 10 Maha Vir Chakra, 22 Kirti Chakra, 63 Vir Chakra, 119 Shaurya Chakra and 587 Sena Medal earned by the officers commissioned from this academy bears testimony to the Valor and dedication displayed by the Alumni. A new academy was set up at Gaya in 2011; but was given the go-ahead in December 2019 to be disbanded.
Bhavna Chauhan is an Indian novelist, architect and a former Indian Army major. Chauhan graduated from the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, India, in March 2001, standing first in the order of merit and winning six proficiency medals. She served as a Major in the Indian army for six years. Her first novel, Where Girls Dare, was published by Penguin Books in 2010 as part of their Metro Reads series. Where Girls Dare is a fictional account that follows the antics of 52 lady cadets (LCs), who train alongside 400 gentleman cadets (GCs), some of whom believe that having women in the armed forces is a bad idea.
Women in the Pakistan Armed Forces are the female officers who serve in the Pakistan Armed Forces. Women have been taking part in Pakistani military since 1947, after the establishment of Pakistan. In 2006, the first women fighter pilot batch joined the combat aerial mission command of PAF. The Pakistan Navy prohibits women from serving in the combat branch. Rather, they are appointed and serve in operations involving military logistics, staff and senior administrative offices, particularly in the regional and central headquarters. There was a rise in the number of women applying for the combat branch of PAF in 2013.
Mitali Madhumita is the second woman officer in the Indian Army to receive a gallantry award. The first woman officer to be awarded Sena Medal for gallantry is Capt (Dr) CR Leena in 1995.
All branches of the Indian Armed Forces have women in combat roles. Women are allowed in combat services and supervisory roles. The Indian Air Force had 13.09% (2018) and 8.50% (2014) women; the Indian Navy 6% (2018) and 3% (2014); the Indian Army 3.80% (2018) and 3% (2014). As of 2020, three officers have the rank of lieutenant-general or equivalent, all in the Medical Services. In May 2021, 83 women were inducted as Jawans for the first time in the Indian Army, in the Corps of Military Police.
The Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Department is the legal branch of the Indian Army. It deals with military related disciplinary cases and litigation and assists in providing legal assistance to the army in human rights matters and the rule of law among other things. The department consists of legally qualified Army officers who are educated in military law and provide legal help to the military in all aspects. The department supports the Judge Advocate General who is the legal and judicial chief of India and advises the Chief of the Army Staff of legal matters. The JAG's Department is also responsible for emerging fields of military law such as those related to cyber laws, space laws, terrorism and human rights violations. The service rendered in the JAG's Department are considered to be Judicial service as per the regulations for the Indian Army.
Priya Malik is an Indian wrestler. She won the gold medal at 2021 World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Women's 73 kg. She won Bronze Medal at Asian wrestling championship 2023 held in Astana.
