Proscovia Nalweyiso, is a senior Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). [1] At the rank of lieutenant general, she is the highest ranking female officer, in the Ugandan military. [2] [3]

Background

She was born in June 1954, in Mpigi District, in a family with 20 children. [1] [3] In 1979, she began work as a schoolteacher and typist in her home area. During his period, she became an active member of the Ugandan Democratic Party. [1] [3]

Following the 1980 Ugandan national elections and the subsequent formation of the National Resistance Army (NRA), Nalweyiso joined the guerrillas in the bush in 1982. [1] [3]

Military career

In 1983 a unit of female NRA fighters was formed and Nalweyiso was appointed as its commandant. The following year, the unit was relocated from Luweero District in Central Uganda, to Western Uganda. [1] [3]

In 1985, the unit Nalweyiso commanded, participated in the NRA forces that attacked Mbarara military barracks. Following that deployment, the NRA Women's Wing settled in Fort Portal, until the war ended in 1986. [1]

In 1986, when the NRA captured power, Nalweyiso was given the rank of captain and appointed the commandant of the 800-member women's wing in the army, at that time. She steadily rose through the ranks and by 2000 was at the rank of lieutenant colonel. [1] [3]

For over a decade prior to her promotion to major general, she had worked at the Uganda State House as an aide and military adviser to the president of Uganda. [1] [3] [4]

In February 2019, in a promotions exercise that involved over 2,000 men and women of the UPDF, she was promoted from the rank of major general to lieutenant general. [5]

Personal

In 1974, while still a civilian, Nalweyiso married an army officer. She later separated from her husband. She is the mother of four children. [1] [3]

Major General Elly Kayanja, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Effective September 2014, he is the Head of Operation Wealth Creation Programme, whose objective is to improve the standard of living of rural citizens, through farming. Previously, he served as the Deputy Director of National Intelligence, under General David Sejusa. Prior to that, he served as the Director General of the Internal Security Organisation.

Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, is Ugandan army officer. He currently serves as Commander Of Land forces in UPDF. He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under operation code named Operation Shujja. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by General Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).

Major General Richard Prit Olum, commonly known as Dick Olum, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), who serves as the Ugandan commander of the UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the joint Uganda/DRC mission code named Operation Shujaa. He also serves as the commander of the UPDF Mountain Division, based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. His appointment was made on 12 October 2022.

James Mugira is a lieutenant general in the Ugandan army. He is the managing director and chief executive officer of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the business arm of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He was appointed to that position in April 2015. He concurrently serves as the managing director of Luweero Defence Industries Limited, the small-arms manufacturer owned by the UPDF. He has served in that capacity since 2011. From 2008 until 2011, at the rank of brigadier, he served as the director general of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, a division of the UPDF. Before that, he served as the commanding officer of the UPDF Armored Brigade, based in Masaka.

General Joram Mugume, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He is the chairman of the board of directors of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the business arm of the UPDF. He was appointed to that position by the Uganda Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs, on 20 February 2018. He has also served as the chairman of the "Military Land Board", an organ of the UPDF. He has been serving in that position since 2005, having served as Deputy Chief of Defense Forces in the past.

Lieutenant General John Mugume is a senior Ugandan military officer. He currently serves as the General Manager of Defence Forces Shop Limited, the duty-free commissary of the UPDF.

Peter Elwelu is a Lieutenant General in the Ugandan military, known formally as the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Defense Forces of the UPDF. He was appointed to that position on 24 June 2021 Since 9 January 2017, he has served as the commander of land forces, which is the fourth-highest position in the UPDF hierarchy. Prior to that, from June 2013 until January 2017, he was the commander of the UPDF 2nd division, based in Mbarara, the largest town in Uganda's Western Region. Elwelu is most known for the Kasese massacre in which according to Human Rights Watch 153 people, including children, were killed. "They deserved to die" he told the Observer in May 2021.

Colonel Annette Nkalubo, is a senior Ugandan military officer. She is the second highest-ranking military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).

Major Christine Nyangoma, is a senior Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). She is the Commander of the UPDF Women’s Unit in Somalia, as part of the African Unions force, AMISOM.

Immediately prior to his assignment as Deputy IGP, Sabiiti, at the rank of brigadier, served as the Commander of the Military Police of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Sabiiti was replaced as Deputy IGP by Major General Paul Lokech. On Friday, 5 February 2021, Major Genenral Sabiiti Muzeyi was appointed General Manager Luwero Industries, a subsidiary of National Enterprise Corporation (NEC).

Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the UPDF Military Police, effective 26 October 2021. Before that, he was the Commander of the Uganda Contingent in Somalia as part of AMISOM.

Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso, is a Ugandan military officer, who serves as an elected member of parliament representing the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) in the 10th Parliament (2016–2021). On 1 August 2020, she was appointed Spokesperson of the UPDF, replacing Brigadier Richard Karemire, who was transferred to the East African Community headquarters as the Defence Liaison Officer. In January 2021 she was dropped as UPDF representative because of accusations of greed and incompetence.

Brigadier Rebecca Mpagi, is a Ugandan military officer and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, who serves as the Director of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF Air Force. She is credited as the first female in Uganda to qualify as a military aircraft maintenance engineer.

Major General Sam Kiwanuka, is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), who serves as Uganda's Military Attaché to Ethiopia, based at Uganda's embassy in Addis Ababa.

Paul L'Okech, was a senior military officer at the rank of Lieutenant General, in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), who was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Uganda Police Force on 16 December 2020. Between November 2017 and December 2019, he served on special assignment "to monitor on behalf of the guarantors of the South Sudan peace process, the assembling, screening, demobilization and integration of the armed forces of South Sudan".

Brigadier General Robert Freeman Mugabe is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Effective 12 July 2022, he is the Chairman of the UPDF General Court Martial, the highest court of military justice in the country. Before that, he served as the adjutant general of Bombo Military Barracks, the headquarters of the UPDF Land Forces, located in Bombo, Uganda.
