Värmland is a landskap in west-central Sweden. It borders Västergötland, Dalsland, Dalarna, Västmanland, and Närke, and is bounded by Norway in the west. Latin name versions are Varmelandia, Vermelandia, Wermelandia, Værmalandia, Værmolandia, Virmolandia and Vermillandia. Some of the Latinised forms show the origin of the name to come from the large local lake by the name of Värmeln ; others from the river name *Værma, the main outlet of said lake. The province was originally part of Götaland, and became part of Svealand in 1815.
Karlstad is a city, the seat of Karlstad Municipality, the capital of Värmland County, and the largest city in the province Värmland in Sweden. The city had 61,492 inhabitants in 2015 with 90,882 inhabitants in the wider municipality in 2017, and is the 21st biggest municipality in Sweden. Karlstad has a university and a cathedral.

The 1979 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships was the third edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship and was held from 27 December 1978 until 3 January 1979. The tournament was held in Karlstad and Karlskoga, Sweden. The Soviet Union won its third consecutive gold medal, while Czechoslovakia won the silver, and Sweden the bronze.

IFK Kristianstad won the league and claimed their fourth Swedish title. Karlstads BIK and Näsby IF were relegated.

Karlstads Curlingklubb is a curling club located in Karlstad, Sweden. It is currently best known as the home club of Team Niklas Edin, which holds a record of winning four World Curling Championship titles and seven European Curling Championship titles. It was also the home club of one of the most successful women's curling teams of all time, skipped by Elisabeth Högström. The team skipped by Högström won Sweden's first women's World Curling Championship gold medal, in addition to two World Curling Championship silver medals and four European Curling Championship gold medals.
