The Iraq Stars League is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraqi Premier Division League. It is governed by the Iraqi Pro League Association.
Younis Mahmoud Khalaf is an Iraqi former professional footballer who played as a forward for the Iraq national football team and is currently the second vice-president of the Iraq Football Association. One of the country's greatest ever players, Mahmoud captained the team for ten straight years and became an icon of Asian football. He also played for a number of clubs including teams in Iraq, UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, winning three Golden Boots in Qatar and breaking numerous records.
Al-Talaba Sports Club is an Iraqi professional sports club based in Al-Rusafa, Baghdad. Its football team competes in the Iraq Stars League, top flight of Iraqi football. Founded in 1969, the club was named Al-Jamiea but became known as Al-Talaba ahead of the 1978–79 season after being merged with a new club of the same name. Their home stadium is Al-Talaba Stadium.
Al-Karkh Sports Club is an Iraqi sports club based in Karkh, Baghdad. Its professional football team plays in the Iraq Stars League, the top tier of the Iraqi football. The club's home stadium is Al-Saher Ahmed Radhi Stadium.
Salam Shaker Ali Dad is a former Iraqi professional footballer of who played for Al-Talaba. He played for the Iraq national football team until 2016. He was part of the Iraqi team that finished fourth in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Salam was first called up to the Iraqi B team in the 2007 King's Cup. He played his first international match against Jordan in a friendly on 24 January 2008.

It started on 2 December 2016 and the final was played at Al-Sinaa Stadium in Baghdad on 22 August 2017. It was the second Iraq FA Cup final to be held outside Al-Shaab Stadium, with the first being in 2003.

The 1st Baghdad Championship was the first occurrence of the tournament since it was renamed from its previous name of Umm al-Ma'arik Championship. It was organised by the Iraq Football Association. The top eight teams in the league table at the end of round 27 of the cancelled 2002–03 Iraqi First Division League competed in the tournament.
The 2022–23 season was Al-Shorta's 49th season in the Iraqi Premier League, having featured in all 48 previous editions of the competition. Al-Shorta participated in the Iraqi Premier League as defending champions, as well as the Iraq FA Cup, the Iraqi Super Cup and the Arab Club Champions Cup.
