In the Indian subcontinent, hijra are transgender, intersex, or eunuch people who live in communities that follow a kinship system known as guru-chela system. They are also known as aravani, aruvani, and jogappa, and in Pakistan, khawaja sira.
Water is a 2005 comedy drama and thriller film written and directed by Deepa Mehta, with screenplay by Anurag Kashyap. It is set in 1938 and explores the lives of widows at an ashram in India. The film is also the third and final installment of Mehta's Elements trilogy. It was preceded by Fire (1996) and Earth (1998). The film stars Nana Patekar, Salman Khan, Manisha Koirala and Seema Biswas. A box office bomb when released, the film has over the years gained cult following and cited as one of the best films of Hindi cinema.
Swarg Narak is a 1978 Indian Hindi-language drama film written and directed by Dasari Narayana Rao. Produced by B. Nagi Reddi under the Vijaya Productions banner, the film features Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra, Moushumi Chatterjee, and Shabana Azmi. The music was composed by Rajesh Roshan. She is the first transgender person to represent Asia Pacific in the UN in 2008. At the assembly, she spoke of the plight of sexual minorities. "People should be more human-like. They should respect us as humans and consider our rights as transgenders," she said. She was a contestant on the popular reality show Bigg Boss in 2011. Her efforts helped the first Transgender team to scale a Himalayan peak in 2020.

Dadi Amma... Dadi Amma Maan Jaao! is an Indian Hindi television series on StarPlus. Produced by Rajshri Productions, it stars Seema Biswas, Mohan Joshi, Sheen Das and Anagha Bhosale. It premiered on 27 January 2020. The show was taken off the air abruptly due to the COVID-19 lockdown and later was announced that the show will not be brought back post the coronavirus pandemic. The series is digitally available on Disney+ Hotstar.

The film was dubbed in Tamil as Nee Indri Naan Illai and in Telugu as Preminchalani Undi.
