Quenby Mall, now known as Stanly County Commons, was a shopping mall located in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. It was anchored by Belk, JCPenney, and Harris Teeter. The mall opened in 1966, and it was sold to Stanly County for their use in 1993.
Plans for the construction of the Quenby Mall were announced by Masten-Langston Faison Co, based out of Charlotte, North Carolina in December 1965. [1] The center was aimed to be 160,000 square feet, featuring Belks, Harris Teeter and W. T. Grant as anchor stores. [2] The mall was designed to resemble that of an old English Village, with brickwork walls, planters, and exposed wooden beams being used to compliment the style. [1] Ground was broken in December 1965, between North First and North Second streets in Albemarle, North Carolina. [3] This was one of the earliest examples of an enclosed mall in North Carolina, predicted to be number 5 by the time of its opening. [2]
The malls grand opening happened on September 29, 1966, opening with 5 stores. Belks, W. T. Grants, Friedman's Jewelers, Royce Shoes and Eckerd Drug opened with the mall, meanwhile Harris Teeter and other smaller shops were still finishing construction. [4] In addition, a Hardee's was located as an outparcel of the mall, and had been open for several months prior to the grand opening. [4]
Following the closure of the W. T. Grant store at the mall, department store JCPenney would announce plans to locate at the mall in September 1976. [5] The renovations would complete, and JCPenney had a grand opening on January 26, 1977. [6]
On July 3, 1980, Belk at the Quenby Mall closed in favor of the location at the new Albemarle Mall, which was scheduled to open on July 30 of that year. [7]
The mall would undergo a renovation in 1983, brought upon by its then owners Stephen D Bell & Company, based out of Greensboro, North Carolina. Improvements included a new ceiling, new lighting, new flooring and the addition of heating and air conditioning. [8]
Two businesses: Burney's and Minor Things, would open up at the mall on March 23, 1985. Minor Things was an apparel shop selling children's clothes and shoes, meanwhile Burney's featured outdoor activity gear. [9]
In 1987, JCPenney closed their doors at the Quenby Mall, and hosted a fixture sale in their former store in November of that year. [10]
In 1988, the mall would be put up for sale, with several proposed ideas including changing the mall into a mixed use center. [11]
Following JCPenney's departure, both Harris-Teeter and Eckerd Drug would leave the mall for a new strip center across town in 1989. [12] [13] This would leave the mall anchorless.
First Union Bank would consolidate their Quenby Mall Branch into another location, closing operations at the mall in early 1989. [14]
By the 1990s, the mostly empty shopping mall was attracting interest by the local government to house the health department and other county offices. [15]
A restaurant known as Dinner Bell located at the Quenby Mall, opening in July 1992. [16] They were allowed to stay after the county's renovations. [17]
Stanly County's intentions to purchase the mall were being finalized in late 1992, [18] and completed on January 24, 1993. [17] The mall was purchased by the county for a total of $1.3 million, and they went on to perform over $2 million in renovations on the property to get it suited to their needs. [17]
Mall of Georgia is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall located in unincorporated Gwinnett County, Georgia, near the city of Buford, 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Atlanta. Opened in 1999, it is currently the largest shopping mall in both the Atlanta Metropolitan Area and the state of Georgia, consisting of 188 stores on three levels. Featured in the mall is a large village section, comprising lifestyle tenants and restaurants in an outdoor setting, as well as a 500-seat amphitheater. In 2017 the Mall of Georgia renovated the indoor food court area by updating the seating arrangements, furniture styles, and color schemes. Mall of Georgia was built by and is still owned by Simon Property Group. A portion of the Ivy Creek Greenway runs along the shopping mall area. The mall features the traditional retailers JCPenney, Belk, Dick's Sporting Goods, Macy's, Dillard's, and Von Maur, in addition to a 20-screen Regal Cinemas which also features IMAX. The anchor stores are Von Maur, Macy's, Dillard's, Belk, JCPenney, Havertys Furniture, Barnes & Noble, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Regal Cinemas.
Carolina Place is a shopping mall located in Pineville, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte. The 1,200,000-square-foot (110,000 m2) GLA mall, in the shape of a curve, is anchored by Belk, a Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy combo store, Dillard's, and JCPenney.
Four Seasons Town Centre is a three-story shopping mall in Greensboro, North Carolina. Opened in 1974, it was the first enclosed shopping center in Greensboro. Currently it is anchored by Dillard's and JCPenney and it is the only indoor shopping mall within Greensboro's city limits; however, nearby Friendly Center, an outdoor shopping plaza, has many of the same tenants. It is managed by Brookfield Properties. The shopping mall is located at the I-40 interchange with Gate City Boulevard, southwest of downtown.
Asheville Mall is a regional mall in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville Mall is located off Interstate 240 in eastern Asheville. It is predominantly a one-story mall. Its anchors are Belk, JCPenney, and two Dillard's locations. It has 132 stores and is the largest mall in Western North Carolina. It also dominates the area's retail.

Columbiana Centre is an indoor super-regional shopping mall located off Interstate 26/U.S. Route 76 on Harbison Boulevard in Columbia, South Carolina that opened in 1990. It is the dominant shopping center in the Columbia Metropolitan Area. Most of the mall's territory is located in Lexington County, although portions of the mall extend into Richland County. The regional mall has 788,103 square feet (73,217.2 m2) of retail space. Its anchors include two Belk stores, Dillard's, and JCPenney. The Men's Belk opened in early 2015 in the former Sears which closed in 2014.
Cary Towne Center was an indoor shopping mall in Cary, North Carolina. It was anchored by Belk, Dillard's, Macy's, JCPenney, and Sears.
Independence Mall is the only enclosed shopping mall in Wilmington, North Carolina. It opened in 1979 with anchor stores Belk-Beery, JCPenney, and Sears. A later expansion added a new wing and Dillard's store to the center after Westfield Group purchased the mall. The mall is located on Oleander Drive and Independence Blvd east of downtown Wilmington. The mall has a food court and no longer features a carousel.
The Shoppes at Bel Air, formerly Bel Air Mall, is a super-regional shopping mall, located in Mobile, Alabama, United States. The mall has a gross leasable area of 1,345,000 sq ft (125,000 m2). It is the oldest continuously operating enclosed super-regional mall in Alabama and serves as one of the primary retail venues for the west Mobile shopping district located at the vicinity of Airport Boulevard and Interstate 65. Currently, Belk, Dillard's, JCPenney, Surge Entertainment Center by Drew Brees, and Target serve as the mall's anchor stores; the mall also features more than 130 stores and restaurants.
Rock Hill Galleria is an enclosed regional shopping mall for York, Chester, and Lancaster Counties. It is located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and is managed by Warren Norman Company. The mall has six anchor store spots, four of which are currently occupied, by Belk, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Stars and Strikes. A fifth will be occupied by an Ashley HomeStore in mid-2024.
Southgate Mall is the sole enclosed shopping center in the sixteen county Historic Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. Located on West Ehringhaus Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, the mall is currently anchored by Belk and until its closing in early April 2015; JCPenney.
Magnolia Mall is a shopping mall in Florence, South Carolina, near I-95. It is owned by Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust. The mall opened in 1979, and underwent a renovation in 2008. It underwent a further renovation in 2019, adding H&M, Five Below, and Burlington. Other major stores at the mall are Best Buy, Belk, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Tilt Studios. Burlington replaced a Sears which closed in 2017. On June 4, 2020, JCPenney announced that it would close by around October 2020 as part of a plan to close 154 stores nationwide. In October 2021, Tilt Studios opened in the former space occupied by JCPenney.
Signal Hill Mall was a regional enclosed shopping mall located in Statesville, North Carolina, United States. Opened in 1973, it originally featured more than 40 stores, with Woolworth, Belk, and Spainhour's as its original anchor stores. An expansion in 1979 relocated Spainhour's while also adding JCPenney. Spainhour's and Woolworth both closed in the mid-1990s, with Peebles and Hills respectively taking their places; Hills in turn was replaced by Sears soon after. The mall experienced a great deal of decline in the 2010s, losing most of its major stores throughout the decade and receiving significant attention as an example of a dead mall.
NetPark Tampa Bay is a business park in the East Lake-Orient Park neighborhood of Tampa, Florida, United States. The complex, which primarily houses offices, is a redevelopment of the former East Lake Square Mall, a shopping mall built by Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation in 1976. The mall's anchor stores were JCPenney, Montgomery Ward, and Belk-Lindsey, with H. J. Wilson Co. joining in 1980. H. J. Wilson Co. became Service Merchandise in 1985, and Belk-Lindsey was sold to Dillard's in 1992. After a period of decline in the 1990s which included the closure of all four anchor stores, the mall was closed entirely in 1998 and officially reopened as NetPark Tampa Bay a year later.
