Quilp Rock

Quilp Rock is a small, isolated rock in Laubeuf Fjord, lying 6.5 kilometres (3.5 nmi) south-southeast of the south tip of Pinero Island and 2.4 kilometres (1.3 nmi) off the northwest side of Pourquoi Pas Island, off the west coast of Graham Land. First surveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), it was named by them after the dwarf, Daniel Quilp, a vicious, ill-tempered character in The Old Curiosity Shop , by Charles Dickens.

Laubeuf Fjord landform

Laubeuf Fjord is a sound in Antarctica, 40 kilometres long in a north-south direction and averaging 16 km (10 mi) wide, lying between the east-central portion of Adelaide Island and the southern part of Arrowsmith Peninsula, Graham Land. It connects Hanusse Bay to the north with Marguerite Bay to the south. The southern 'border' between Laubeuf Fjord and Marguerite Bay is formed by the line between Rothera Point, Adelaide Island, and Cape Sáenz, which is the southernmost point of the Arrowsmith Peninsula. The fjord was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and named by him for Maxime Laubeuf, a French marine engineer who supervised building the engine for the ship Pourquoi-Pas.

Pourquoi Pas Island

Pourquoi Pas Island is a mountainous island, 27 km (17 mi) long and from 8 to 18 km wide, lying between Bigourdan Fjord and Bourgeois Fjord off the west coast of Graham Land. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition under Charcot, 1908-10. The island was charted more accurately by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–37, who named it for Charcot's expedition ship, the Pourquoi-Pas.

Graham Land geographical object

Graham Land is the portion of the Antarctic Peninsula that lies north of a line joining Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz. This description of Graham Land is consistent with the 1964 agreement between the British Antarctic Place-names Committee and the US Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names, in which the name "Antarctic Peninsula" was approved for the major peninsula of Antarctica, and the names Graham Land and Palmer Land for the northern and southern portions, respectively. The line dividing them is roughly 69 degrees south.

Surge Rocks are a group of five rocks, two always exposed, lying 190 metres (0.1 nmi) southwest of Eichorst Island and 1 kilometre (0.6 nmi) south-southeast of Bonaparte Point, Anvers Island. The name was suggested by Palmer Station personnel in 1972. Ocean swells working on the shoal surrounding these rocks, cause breaking and a "surge" of the water level in any weather condition.

It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who thought that it was a cape of the mainland and named it as such after Alexandre Millerand, French statesman.

Rymill Bay bay

Rymill Bay is a bay in Antarctica. It is 16.7 kilometres (9 nmi) wide at its mouth and indents 9.3 kilometres (5 nmi) between Red Rock Ridge and Bertrand Ice Piedmont along the west coast of Graham Land. Rymill Bay was probably first seen from a distance by the French Antarctic Expedition under Jean-Baptiste Charcot in 1909. The bay was first surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), and was resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). The name is for John Riddoch Rymill, Australian leader of the British Graham Land Expedition.

Bowman Peninsula is a peninsula, 46 kilometres (25 nmi) long in a north-south direction and 28 kilometres (15 nmi) wide in its northern and central portions, lying between Nantucket Inlet and Gardner Inlet on the east coast of Palmer Land. The peninsula is ice covered and narrows toward the south, terminating in Cape Adams. It was discovered by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, under Finn Ronne, who named it for Isaiah Bowman.

Ailsa Craig is a precipitous island 1 mile (2 km) south of Point Rae, off the south coast of Laurie Island in the South Orkney Islands. Charted in 1903 by the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition under William Speirs Bruce, who named it for the island in the Firth of Clyde in Scotland.

Breccia Island

Breccia Island is a small low island lying 2 kilometres (1 nmi) northwest of the Tiber Rocks in the northern part of Rymill Bay, off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was photographed by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) in November 1947, and so named by RARE geologist Robert L. Nichols because the country rock is a plutonic breccia.

Cadman Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Cadman Glacier is a glacier, 1.5 nautical miles (3 km) wide at its mouth and about 7 nautical miles (13 km) long, flowing northwestward into the head of the southern arm of Beascochea Bay south of Plas Point on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Stevens Rock is a small, lone bare rock 2.8 kilometres (1.5 nmi) east of Strahan Glacier and 2 kilometres (1 nmi) off the coast of Antarctica. Discovered in February 1931 by the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) under Mawson, who named it for Commander C.W. Stevens, Hydrographic Dept., Royal Australian Navy.

Knight Rocks

The Knight Rocks are a group of small rocks which lie 8 kilometres (4.5 nmi) west-northwest of the south end of Snow Island, in the South Shetland Islands. The rocks were so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee following a survey by Lieutenant Commander F.W. Hunt, Royal Navy, in 1951–52, because of their proximity to Castle Rock.

Grace Rock

Grace Rock is a rock in Bransfield Strait, Antarctica lying 1.72 kilometres (0.93 nmi) off the southeast coast of Nelson Island in the South Shetland Islands. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1961 after the British sealing vessel Grace from Plymouth, which visited the South Shetland Islands in 1821–22.

Piñero Island

Piñero Island is an island, 3.7 km (2 nmi) long and 0.9 km (0.5 nmi) wide, lying about 8.3 km (4.5 nmi) northwest of Pourquoi Pas Island, off the west coast of Graham Land. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition under J.B. Charcot, 1908–10, and named by him for Dr. Antonio F. Piñero, member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Republic, on whose motion the government voted unlimited credit to meet the needs of the expedition.

Hansen Island is an island 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, lying immediately north of The Gullet at the head of Hanusse Bay, off the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was first surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, who used the provisional name "North Island" for this feature. The island was resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and was renamed in 1954 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Leganger H. Hansen, manager at Messrs. Christian Salvesen's whaling station at Leith Harbor, South Georgia, 1916–37, who gave great assistance to the BGLE, 1934–37.

Marshall Archipelago

The Marshall Archipelago is an extensive group of large ice-covered islands within the Sulzberger Ice Shelf off Antarctica. Several of the islands were discovered and plotted by the Byrd Antarctic Expeditions and by the United States Antarctic Service (1939–41), all led by Admiral Richard E. Byrd. The full extent of the archipelago was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos (1959–65). The name was proposed by Admiral Byrd for General of the Army George C. Marshall, who made financial contributions as a private individual and also, on the same basis, provided advisory assistance to the Byrd expedition of 1933–35.

McCalman Peak

McCalman Peak is the 550-metre (1,800 ft) summit of an east–west trending ridge 3 nautical miles (6 km) north of Crystal Hill, 3.97 km east-northeast of Gornik Knoll, 6.9 km south-southeast of Kumata Hill and 4.55 km west-southwest of Zaldapa Ridge on Trinity Peninsula, Antarctica. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Donald McCalman, a surveyor with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey at Hope Bay in 1958–59.

Keep Rock

Keep Rock is a small rock lying 1.5 kilometres (0.8 nmi) west-southwest of Castle Rock, off the west side of Snow Island, in the South Shetland Islands. The name, which derives from "keep" in association with Castle Rock, was given by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee following survey by Lieutenant Commander F.W. Hunt, Royal Navy, in 1951–52.

Ryrie Rock is an isolated rock off the coast, 20 kilometres (11 nmi) northeast of Kidson Island and 48 kilometres (26 nmi) northeast of Byrd Head. Discovered in February 1931 by the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) under Mawson, who named it for the Australian High Commissioner in London at the time.

Rocca Islands is a group of small islands and rocks 3 nautical miles (6 km) east of Avian Island, off the south end of Adelaide Island. Discovered in 1909 by the French Antarctic Expedition and named by Charcot for Monsieur Rocca, an acquaintance in Punta Arenas. Remapped by the British Royal Navy Hydrographic Survey Unit in 1963.
