R. Sampath Raj is an Indian National Congress political activist and the former mayor of Bengaluru city. [1] [2] [3] [4] He assumed office on 28 September 2017 and is a corporator from D. J. Halli ward.
He contested the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections from C. V. Raman Nagar assembly constituency [5] and was defeated by S. Raghu of BJP. [6] [7]

The 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on 12 May 2018 in 222 constituencies to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The election was postponed in Jayanagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar,following the death of the MLA B. N. Vijaya Kumar and a voter fraud scandal respectively till 28 May. The election saw a voter turnout of 72.13 per cent,the highest in Karnataka since 1952 assembly polls. The counting of votes took place on 15 May 2018.

On the night of 11 August and the early hours of 12 August 2020,violent clashes took place around the residence of a legislator and the police stations of KG Halli and DJ Halli of the Indian city of Bangalore,Karnataka. Provoked by a Facebook post on Muhammad that was allegedly shared by the nephew of Akhanda Srinivas Murthy,a state legislator of the Indian National Congress,a group of Muslims arrived at his house in protest with petrol bombs,clubs which later turned violent.
