The Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering is one of nine faculties at the RWTH Aachen University. It comprises three sections for Raw Materials and Waste Disposal Technology, Metallurgy and Materials Technology and Geoscience and Geology . The faculty was found in 1880 and produced several notable individuals, including Friedrich Robert Helmert. Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled in the faculty.

Already with the establishment of the RWTH Aachen as the Königlich Rheinisch Westphälische Polytechnische Schule zu Aachen on October 10, 1870, the chairs for mining and metallurgy were set up beside the fields of building construction, hydraulic construction as well as road and railway construction. A chemistry laboratory was also among the facilities. [1] Around the turn of the 20th century, the chair of metallurgy of iron (German : Eisenhüttenwesen) developed to a center of leading technology. After the transformation of the institution into a technical university, the fourth faculty was formed as the Faculty of Mining, Chemistry and Metallurgy (German : Fakultät für Bergbau, Chemie und Hüttenkunde). [3] The department of Chemistry remained until 1940 within the faculty to be incorporated then into the Faculty of Natural Sciences. [4] The faculty was later renamed Faculty of Mining, Metallurgy and Geosciences (German : Fakultät für Bergbau, Hüttenkunde und Geowissenschaften). [5]
The RWTH Aachen University was one of the only three technological institutions in Germany, the others being Technische Universität Berlin and Clausthal University of Technology, featuring the disciplines of mining and metallurgy.

Theodore von Kármán, a pioneer of modern Aerodynamics, accepted a position as director of the Aeronautical Institute in 1912. The faculty received a high amount of funds granted by third-party donors in the last years.

The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) is a private university in Halban, Oman. It was established in 2007 in Muscat in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University in Germany, one of the leading and top-ranked universities of technology in Europe. GUtech was one of the first universities in Oman to receive international accreditation for all its BSc and BEng programs. In the Academic Year 2019 more than 2200 students were enrolled in GUtech's programs. GUtech is now one of the best universities in Oman.
Sabina Jeschke is a German university professor for information sciences in mechanical engineering at the RWTH Aachen University. As of 10 November 2017, she was named member of the management board of Deutschen Bahn AG for digitalization and technology. She is also the director of the Cybernetics Lab IMA/ZLW & IfU. In the summer semester of 2017, she is on sabbatical leave to develop her research in the area of artificial consciousness, and is involved in building a think tank "Strong Artificial Intelligence" at the Volvo Car Corporation in Göteborg. Since May 2015, Jeschke has been a member of the supervisory board of Körber AG, since April 2012 chairman of the board of VDI Aachen. Beginning of January 2023 she took on an additional position as a senior advisor at Arthur D. Little.

The Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung in Industrie und Handwerk (IKV), the Institute for Plastics Processing in Industry and Trade at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Germany, is a teaching and research institute for the study of plastics technology. It stands for practice-oriented research, innovation and technology transfer. The focus of the IKV is the integrative view of product development in the material, construction and processing sectors, in particular in plastics and rubber. The sponsor is a non-profit association that currently includes around 300 companies from the plastics industry worldwide and through which the institute maintains a close connection between industry and science. In addition, the IKV is a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen "Otto von Guericke" (AiF).
