Rachel McCarthy (born June 10, 2001) [1] is an American professional soccer player from American Fork, Utah who currently plays as midfielder for the Dallas Trinity FC in the USL Super League.
McCarthy was born in American Fork, Utah, and attended American Fork High School. In 2017, she and Jamie Shepherd (classmate and future BYU teammate) won the state 6A High School championship. [2] McCarthy also played for Utah Celtic FC. [3]
McCarthy attended Brigham Young University, playing as a midfielder and forward for the Cougars in the WCC. During her five seasons with BYU, the team qualified for the NCAA Division I tournament every year, advancing to the quarter-finals or further in three of those seasons.
In total, she made 101 appearances for the Cougars, but only started in 26 games. She was regarded as a "super-sub" for the energy she brought coming off the substitute bench. The most notable example being in a regular season matchup against #1 ranked and defending NCAA champions, UCLA. The Cougars upset the Bruins 3–1 with the second BYU goal coming from McCarthy. [4]
McCarthy played an integral role in helping the Cougars finish runner's up at the 2021 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament.
BYU moved to the Big 12 conference in 2023, McCarthy's final year with the team. McCarthy helped lead the team to the finals of the 2023 Big 12 tournament but would lose to the Texas Longhorns, 1–3. During the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament, BYU was down 3–0 against the North Carolina Tar Heels at halftime. McCarthy was brought in the second half of the game and BYU would score 4 goals in final 29 minutes in a dramatic come-from-behind victory that sent BYU to their second ever College Cup appearance.
The Indy Eleven announced that McCarthy would be joining the club on April 25, 2022. [5] The 2022 USL W League season was the first season of USL W League. Indy Eleven won the very first game in league history, defeating Kings Hammer FC 3–1 on May 6. McCarthy scored the first two goals making her the first player in team and league history with a goal and a brace. [6] [7] The team went undefeated in their regular season but lost to Minnesota Aurora FC in the league's playoffs quarterfinals in July 2023.
After going undrafted in the 2024 NWSL Draft, she joined Hungarian side ETO FC Győr in January 2024. The team had been the runner's up in the Női NB I league the previous two seasons and helped them finish second in the league for the 2023/2024 season, just 4 points behind league winners FTC-Telekom. [8]
On June 18, 2024, McCarthy joined Dallas Trinity FC in preparation for the inaugural USL Super League season. [9]
