Radar Lock is a 1989 video game developed and published by Atari for the Atari 2600. [1] [2]
The game was announced in 1988, and was programmed by Doug Neubauer. [3] [2] In developing the game Neubauer reused the game-engine from the Atari 2600 game Solaris , which he also worked on. [1] [4]
The game is essentially a clone of the Sega game Afterburner . [1] [4] The player pilots a delta-winged jet fighter armed with missiles and guns that they must periodically refuel and rearm. Two types of missiles maybe fired - radar guided missiles that home in on their targets, and "proximity" missiles that destroy everything within the area. Refueling is carried out by lining the aircraft up with a tanker to receive in-air refueling. The enemy aircraft faced by the player increase in number and capabilities as the game progresses, being drones at the beginning, followed by interceptors, then patrolling aircraft that approach from the rear, then bombers with escorts and stealth fighters, and finally "super bombers" firing larger numbers of missiles. To win the game the player must successfully pass through five missions, each of two waves. The game may be played single-player, or in a two-player co-operative mode with one player controlling the aircraft whilst the other controls the weapons. [2] Accessing all the weapons requires use of the second joystick. [5]
Reviewing the game in the 1989 issue of Atarian magazine, Steve Ryno and Brad Butler gave the game a positive review, describing it as "exciting and addictive". [2]
A December 2003 review for the game on the Video Game Critic website was mixed, praising the graphics but criticising the controls and the high difficulty level of the game. [6] Writing in the 2007 book Classic Home Video Games, 1972-1984 A Complete Reference Guide, Brett Weiss gave the game a positive review, admiring the achievement of presenting such a complex game on a platform having the Atari 2600's limited capabilities. [1] Writing in the 2018 book The A-Z of Atari 2600 Games: Volume 2, Kieren Hawken also gave the game a positive review, praising especially the graphics and gameplay, and giving the game an overall score of 9/10. [4] A 2018 review by Patrick Hickey Jr. for the ReviewFix.com website was positive, describing it as a "unique experience on the 2600" and "ahead of its time". [7]
Star Raiders is a space combat simulator video game created by Doug Neubauer and published in 1980 by Atari, Inc. Originally released for the Atari 400/800 computers, Star Raiders was later ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Atari ST. The player assumes the role of a starship fighter pilot, who must protect starbases from invading forces called Zylons. Piloting and combat are shown in the 3D cockpit view, while a 2D galactic map shows the state of the Zylon invasion. Neubauer made the game in his spare time at Atari, inspired by contemporary media such as Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars, as well as the 1971 mainframe game Star Trek.
Solaris is a space combat video game for the Atari 2600 published in 1986 by Atari. The game involves a player seeking out the planet Solaris via their starship. To accomplish this, the player must navigate the galactic scanner to explore quadrants of a map. Doing so allows them to explore Federation planets to refuel their ship, and engage in combat with hostile aliens known as the Zylons.
Phoenix is a fixed shooter video game developed for arcades in Japan and released in 1980 by Taito. The player controls a space ship shooting at incoming enemies that fly from the top of the screen down towards the player's ship. There are five stages which repeat endlessly. The fifth is a fight against a large enemy spaceship, making Phoenix one of the first shooters with a boss battle, an element that would become common for the genre.
Combat is a 1977 video game by Atari, Inc. for the Atari Video Computer System. In the game, two players controlling either a tank, a biplane, or a jet fire missiles at each other for two minutes and sixteen seconds. Points are scored by hitting the opponent, and the player with the most points when the time runs out wins. Variations on the gameplay introduce elements such as invisible vehicles, missiles that ricochet off of walls, and different playing fields.
Chopper Command is a horizontally scrolling shooter released by Activision for the Atari 2600 in June 1982. It was written by Bob Whitehead. The player flies a helicopter left and right over a scrolling, wraparound landscape, shooting down enemy airplanes to protect a convoy of trucks below.
Alien is a 1982 maze video game for the Atari 2600 published by Fox Video Games. The game has the player control a human moving through the hallways of a space ship avoiding the adult alien and destroying the small alien eggs.
River Raid is a video game developed by Carol Shaw for the Atari Video Computer System and released in 1982 by Activision. The player controls a fighter jet over the River of No Return in a raid behind enemy lines. The goal is to navigate the flight by destroying enemy tankers, helicopters, fuel depots and bridges without running out of fuel or crashing.
Megamania is a fixed shooter video game developed by Steve Cartwright for the Atari 2600. It was published by Activision in 1982. A pilot of an intergalactic space cruiser has a nightmare where his ship is being attacked by food and household objects. Using the missile launcher from their space cruiser, the pilot fends off the attackers. The game was later released for the Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit computers.
Doug Neubauer is an American integrated circuit designer, video game designer, and programmer. Following graduation for Oregon State University and working at National Semiconductor, Neubauer worked at Atari, Inc. where he would develop the logic design on Atari's POKEY chip and designing and programming the video game Star Raiders (1980) both for the Atari 8-bit computer line. Star Raiders would go on to become one of the best-known games for Atari's 8-bit computers.
Z-Tack is a shoot 'em up for the Atari 2600 from Asia-based developer Onbase Co. and published under its Bomb label in 1983. The player controls an alien ship flying above a city with a goal of destroying bases nestled in the buildings. There are six different city-landscapes. The game received mixed reviews from critics and was described as an inverted version of Imagic's Atlantis.
Great Escape is a multidirectional shooter published for the Atari 2600 in 1983. It was produced by Bomb, a line of video games from developer Onbase Co. based out of Asia. It received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, with reviewers making comparisons with Defender and Asteroids.
Human Cannonball is a non-military variant of an artillery video game released in 1979 by Atari, Inc. for the Atari VCS. The goal is to launch a performer from a cannon so they land in container of water supported by a tower. The game was in the first wave of Atari VCS games after the original nine launch titles. It was also among the first games for the console to be discontinued by Atari.
Fatal Run is a 1990 post-apocalyptic-themed vehicular combat game developed by Sculptured Software for the Atari 2600 and Atari 7800. It was published by Atari Corporation simultaneous by Atari for both platforms. Along with Klax, this was the last game Atari officially released for the Atari 2600. At 32kB of data, the game was also the biggest ever released for the Atari 2600. The game was only released in Europe.

The game received mostly negative critical reception due to its unrealistic portrayal of the sport.
