Rag & Bone (stylized in all lowercase) is an American fashion brand. The brand is sold in more than 700 shops around the world, as well as in Rag & Bone retail stores. [1] Marcus Wainwright and Nathan Bogle co-founded the brand in 2002, though Wainwright stepped down as chief brand officer in July 2023. The brand's design oversight is now shared between Jennie McCormick and Kyle Sweeney. [2]

History

Rag & Bone was founded in 2002 by Nathan Bogle and Marcus Wainwright. [3] In 2004 the label launched with a men's line and a women's line followed in 2005. In 2006, Bogle left the company and David Neville, who joined the company in 2005, became partner with Wainwright. [4] [5]

With the help of footwear designer Tull Price, former owner of Royal Elastics and current co-owner of FEIT, Rag & Bone Footwear was founded in 2008. Its footwear line includes the Newbury boot. [6] [7] [8]

Today, it offers men's and women's ready-to-wear jeans (under rag & bone/JEAN), footwear and accessories. [3] For their SS15 menswear collection, in lieu of a fashion show, they enlisted friends, including Jerry Seinfeld, Carmelo Anthony, Camille Rowe for a portrait photo series. [9]

In October 2015, Wainwright and Neville, who previously spoke at the WWD Menswear Summit, [10] were guest speakers at the WWD CEO Summit where they discussed the brand's trajectory and retail footprint, including their newly opened NY concept store, the General Store. [11] [12]

In October 2016, Rag & Bone expanded into fragrance with the launch of a line of eight unisex Eau de Parfums. [13] In the same month, it also signed its first licensing deal for eyewear with Italian eyewear creator, Safilo Group, beginning in January 2018. [14]

In July 2023, Rag & Bone's Chief Merchandising and Design Officer Jennie McCormick took over oversight of womenswear, footwear, and accessories, while Senior Vice President of Design and Merchandising Kyle Sweeney took over menswear and merchandising. [15]

In April 2024, Guess?, Inc. and WHP Global completed the acquisition of the brand. [16]

Marketing

Kate Moss starred in the brand's first ever advertising campaign for FW 2012 and also shot their SS 2013 campaign. [17] American actor Michael Pitt fronted their first men’s campaign for FW 2013 with French actress Léa Seydoux appearing in their women’s campaign. [18] For SS 2014 they cast actors Emile Hirsch and Stacy Martin. [19] For FW14 Michael Pitt and Winona Ryder star in their campaign. [20]

The SS15 campaign featured a Rag & Bone film called The Driver, starring Michael Pitt and Astrid Berges-Frisbey. Directed by Pitt, it won the Best Production Award in the Established Talent category at the Milan Fashion Film Festival in September 2015. [21]

The brand had raised controversy after an attempt at shock advertising backfired, when it commissioned an advertisement where the body of a vintage Porsche 911SC was crushed. However the Porsche used in the film was actually a shell of a car that was salvaged from a scrap yard for the shoot. [22] [23]

In February 2016, Rag & Bone launched a serial Photo Project ad campaign. The photographs featured women representing the diversity and breadth of the brand. [24] Later that year, the Men’s Project featured an eclectic cast of men from various artistic backgrounds. The Project featured John Turturro, Mauro Refosco, Honor Titus, Wiz Khalifa, Harvey Keitel, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Hamill. [25]

In December 2019, Rag & Bone commissioned Stephen Shore to photograph the SS 2020 campaign. Shore photographed models Ajani Russell, Chloe Fineman, Dylan Penn, Olivia Cooke, Pyper America and Paloma Elsesser wearing the collection while riding the New York City Subway. [26]

Awards and honors

In 2006 Bogle, Neville and Wainwright won the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation (EDFF) award in the men's category which entailed a $25,000 prize fund to stage a fashion show during NYFW. [27] [28] [29] That same year they were finalists in the Council of Fashion Designers of America's Vogue Fashion Fund. In 2007 they were recipients of the CFDA's Emerging Talent Award. [30] In 2010, Neville and Wainwright won the CFDA/Swarovski Award for Emerging Menswear Talent. [31] In 2013, Rag & Bone received the Breakthrough Award at the Accessories Council Excellence Awards. [32] In 2014, they were nominated for the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year. [33] In 2015, Neville and Wainwright were honored at Phoenix House’s Fashion Award Dinner. [34] In 2015, Neville and Wainwright were nominated for the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year award. [35] In 2016, Neville and Wainwright were nominated for the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year award for the third time. [36]

Stuart Vevers is a British fashion designer. He graduated from the University of Westminster in 1996. His first job was at Calvin Klein, followed by Bottega Veneta, Givenchy and Louis Vuitton, where he worked with Marc Jacobs. He joined Mulberry as creative director in 2005 and was instrumental in the company's success, transforming their leather goods into the must-have bags. He has also collaborated with Luella Bartley and Designer of the Year, Giles Deacon. In 2006, he won the British Fashion Council's Accessory Designer of the Year award. In July 2007 it was announced that he had been appointed creative director of Loewe, and, on 25 June 2013, Vevers was announced to be the executive creative director at American label Coach.

Billy Reid is an American fashion designer based in Florence, Alabama. His line includes menswear, womenswear, accessories and eyewear. His clothing, self-described as "lived-in luxury" and "broken-in luxury", is known for its unusual accents and Southern influence. Reid summarizes his brand's concept as "American luxury built to last". Billy Reid, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Michael Kors are the only fashion designers who have won 3 or more CFDA Awards.

Alexandre Plokhov is a Russian-born American clothing designer. He designed for Cloak, Gianni Versace Uomo, Alexandre Plokhov, Helmut Lang and Nomenklatura Studio labels.

Raun LaRose is an American menswear fashion designer based in New York, New York. He has received recognition for his futuristic style and use of progressive fabrics and texture in his work. He attended Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) majoring in menswear design. Larose later traveled to Paris, France in order to intern with designer, Zac Posen (2010). When he returned to the States, he decided to work on his self-titled brand, "Raun Larose." He returned to Paris in 2012 to attend Paris Fashion Week and was profiled by Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ), Women's Wear Daily (WWD), as well as other press outlets. Shortly after, he traveled to London, England, where he collaborated with Rankin Studios in a fashion video entitled, "The Dancer" (2012). He was featured in Vogue Italia in the September issue of 2012, in which he was profiled as one of the 190 emerging designers worldwide. His 2015 collection, "Because the Internet," has been received with rave reviews worldwide. Recently, Raun Larose was sponsored by the CFDA, where he was given a platform for his first presentation in New York City during New York Fashion Week Men's for his namesake collection, for Fall 2017. His collection, "To Whom It May Concern," was profiled widely. His focus on creating pieces that experiment with proportions and progressive fabrics, all while maintaining the element of practicality, is as he says, "... a cross between artistic references and mainstream consumerism.”

Timo Weiland is a fashion line for men and women designed by Tim Weiland, Donna Kang and Alan Eckstein. Based in the Garment District of New York City, Timo Weiland started as a neckwear collection and evolved into a full-range womenswear and menswear designer clothing line.

Todd Snyder is an American fashion designer based in New York City. He founded his eponymous fashion label in 2011, and has been called "the most influential menswear designer of his generation" by GQ. Todd Snyder is also the Creative Director of American heritage brand Woolrich's Black Label Collection.

Tull Price is a footwear designer, entrepreneur, and business owner.

The Row is an American luxury fashion label established by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 2006 in New York City. The Row produces ready-to-wear clothing, footwear, handbags and accessories. The label has five monobrand stores and is available in 37 countries. The brand has been described as "an American answer to Loro Piana and Phoebe Philo-era Céline".

Hood By Air is a fashion and streetwear brand based in New York City co-founded by designers Shayne Oliver and Raul Lopez. It was launched in 2006 and took a hiatus 2017–2019. Oliver left the brand in 2023.
