Rais Anis Sabri from Najibabad, Uttar Pradesh, [1] India is one of the youngest performing Sufiana Qawwals. He is the son and disciple of Rais Sabri, who in turn is a disciple of the famous Qawwal Aslam Sabri. [2]

Rais Anis Sabri started learning the intricacies of Sufi Qawwali from the age of four and gave his first performance at seven.

He sings mainly in the Chisti Rang, of the Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti of Ajmer, India, following the tradition of Sufi saint Nizamuddin and Amir Khusro, the 13th century Sufi poet. At the age of 12, he gave a performance in the Amir Khusro Sangeet Academy and Friends of Dakshinchitra, in Chennai. [3]

Personal life

Rais Anis Sabri was born on 25 September 1993 at Jalalabad (Najibabad), Uttar Pradesh in Dist. Bijnor. He began to learn the intricacies of this genre of performing arts from his father, Rais Sabri [4] at the age of four and at six gave his first performance. He has several CDs to his credit and one of his albums ‘Chisti Rang [5] ’ His Youtube channel has amassed over 15 million total views. [6]

Musical journey

Initially, Rais performed along with his father only but at later stage he started performing solo. In 2003, Rais collaborated with Sonic Enterprises and has given 35 Hit Music Albums. [7] His performance was held at the Music Academy in Chennai on October 26, 2007. The event was organized by Amir Khusro Sangeet Academy, [8] a nonprofit registered trust given to promoting Hindustani classical and related genres in the city. . [9]

Rais has performed abroad, including Johannesburg [10] and Lenasia. [11] [12]

The Sabri Brothers were a musical band from Pakistan who were performers of Sufi qawwali music and were closely connected to the Chishti Order. They are considered one of the greatest Sufi qawwali singers of all times. The Sabri Brothers were led by Ghulam Farid Sabri and his brother Maqbool Ahmed Sabri. They are often referred to as Shahenshah-e-Qawwali and are also known as the roving ambassadors of Pakistan. The band was initially founded by Maqbool Ahmed Sabri at the age of 11 years and was known as Bacha Qawwal Party. His elder brother Ghulam Farid Sabri joined after insistence from their father. He became the leader of the group and the band soon became known as the Sabri Brothers. They were the first-ever qawwali artists to perform qawwali in the United States and other Western countries; they were also the first-ever Asian artists to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1975.

Aziz Mian Qawwal was a Pakistani traditional qawwal famous for singing ghazals in his own style of qawwali and is considered one of the greatest qawwals in South Asia. He holds the record for singing the longest commercially released qawwali, Hashr Ke Roz Yeh Poochhunga, which runs slightly over 150 minutes and. Aziz is known by sobriquets — "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali", "Fauji Qawwal"(Military Singer) since his early performances were often in army barracks, and "the Nietzschean qawwal".

Ghulam Farid Sabri was a qawwali singer and member of the Sabri Brothers, a qawwali group in Pakistan in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The Sabri Brothers received the Pride of Performance award by the President of Pakistan in 1978. Sabri was also a Sufi mystic connected to the Chishti Order.

Chhaap Tilak Sab Chheeni, is a Ghazal written and composed by Amir Khusro, a 14th-century Sufi mystic, in popular Western Indian language Braj Bhasha. Due to the resonance of its melody and mystical lyrics, it is frequently heard in Qawwali concerts across Indian Subcontinent. Chaapp Tilak Sab Chheeni is considered as Amir Khusru‘s most known Kalam which is basically a penned version of his imagination of devotion and the joy of oneness with the eternal one. This poetry is an epic example where an inherent middle eastern art form gets entangled with the Indic philology, custom and art a unique twist between the two artforms. This kind of devotion is rarely seen in Islamic ghazals and qawwalis preceding it. This poetry is a great example of the role both cultures played to create this Ghazal and Qawwali which has a unique essence combining both Indic and Islamic culture which inherently created a new unique art form which contributed to the early beginnings of the Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb culture to be developed.

Aaj Rang Hai also known as Rang or Rung (transl.Color) is a Qawwali written by the 13th-century Sufi poet, Amir Khusrau in Hindavi and Braj Bhasha dialects. In the song, Khusrau describes to his mother his ecstasy upon finding his murshid in the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya. The song is a staple of most Qawwali sessions in North India and Pakistan, especially in the Chishti shrines of Delhi. It is traditionally sung as a closing piece at the end of a Qawwali session.

Ustad Ateeq Hussain Khan Bandanawazi Al-Hashmi Qawwal is a Hindustani Qawwal.

Mera Piya Ghar Aaya is a Punjabi Sufi poem written by noted 18th-century Sufi saint and poet Baba Bulleh Shah. He composed this poem at the return of his spiritual guide Shah Inayat Qadiri. The song is part of most of the Qawwali performances. It is one of the best known songs of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and part of his album, Qawwali: The Essential Collection.
