Raja is a remake of the 1970 Hindi film Johny Mera Naam . [3] A. C. Tirulokchandar was initially chosen to direct the film but he left for personal reasons. Sivaji Ganesan later successfully recommended C. V. Rajendran as director. [4]

Soundtrack

The film was released on 29 October 1970, and became a silver jubilee hit. It later won the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Tamil.
