Rajendra Singh Bisht, PTM, TM (born 28 June 1959) is a retired Indian Coast Guard officer who served as the 22nd Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. [1] He was the first Indian Coast Officer to serve as the Director General of ICG. Prior to him the position of DG ICG was held by Vice Admiral ranked officer from the Indian Navy. [2] [3]

Early life

Rajendra Singh Bisht hails from Uttarakhand and is born in a Rajput Family. He did his schooling from Mussoorie and graduation from Dehradun.[ citation needed ]

Coast Guard career

Singh joined the Indian Coast Guard in 1980. He has been one of the pioneers who charted the growth of the organization. As a Flag Officer he has commanded all the classes of ships in the inventory of the service.

He was trained in the Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR) and Maritime Safety with the United States Coast Guard. He has attended the National Security Course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie. Having served in various capacities both afloat and ashore including in the areas of Operations, Administration, HR and Policy & Plans.

He was instrumental in consolidation of the administrative framework of the service and laying the foundation for expansion of the organization in a planned manner.

As an Inspector General, he had commanded both Eastern as well as the erstwhile undivided Western Region (which in itself implies having commanded more than 2/3rd of the operational fleet and units of the service). On the Eastern front, he led the ICG efforts in the Palk Bay at the peak of the ethnic strife, and on the West, he spearheaded the transformation of the service to counter challenges in the Coastal Security by implementing state of art Coastal Security Network.

As the Additional Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, he proficiently handled the conflicting demands in a continually enlarging charter of duties. The onerous responsibility included facilitating the organizational growth in an expeditious manner and providing impetus to achieve a high level of operational effectiveness.

<i>Rani Abbakka</i>-class patrol vessel

The Rani Abbakka-class patrol vessel are a series of inshore patrol vessels being built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. for the Indian Coast Guard. They are based on Australian Thornycroft design. The ship, incidentally, is named after Abbakka Mahadevi, the legendary queen of Tulunadu, Karnataka who fought the Portuguese in the latter half of the 16th Century.

Vice Admiral Harish Chandra Singh Bisht, PVSM, AVSM, ADC is a former Flag Officer of the Indian Navy. He is an alumnus of the Sainik School Ghorakhal, Nainital; National Defence Academy Khadakvasla, Pune and the Naval Academy, Kochi and served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command till his retirement on 31 October 2017.

The Director General of the Indian Coast Guard is the head of the Indian Coast Guard. The DG ICG has their office in the Coast Guard Headquarters (CGHQ) in New Delhi. The Vikram-class offshore patrol vessel is a series of seven offshore patrol vessels (OPV) being built at the Kattupalli shipyard by L&T Shipbuilding for the Indian Coast Guard. These are long range surface ships which are capable of coastal and offshore patrolling.

The President's Tatrakshak Medal is an Indian military decoration, awarded for selfless devotion, distinguished and meritorious service in Indian Coast Guard. It is conferred by the President of India every year on the occasion of national celebrations, Independence Day and Republic Day. It is being presented to the Indian Armed Forces since January 26, 1990, a few years later the Constitution of India came into existence.

Vice Admiral Melville Raymond Schunker, PVSM, AVSM was a flag officer in the Indian Navy. He served as the third Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, which he led from 1982 to 1984. He also served as the 6th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) from 1980 to 1982. He was the commissioning commanding officer of the Indian Navy's only submarine tender ship INS Amba (A54).

The Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) is a training organisation in the Indian Navy. The FODAG is a two-star officer holding the rank of Rear Admiral. The current FODAG is Rear Admiral Mahesh Singh, NM who took over in December 2021.

Virender Singh Pathania PTM, TM, is an Indian Coast Guard officer serving as the 24th and the current Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. He assumed the office on 31 December 2021 upon superannuation of Director General Krishnaswamy Natarajan. He is the first helicopter pilot to hold this position. Previously he served as Additional Director General of Indian Coast Guard and Coast Guard Commander of Western Seaboard.
