A coast guard or coastguard is a maritime security organization of a particular country. The term embraces wide range of responsibilities in different countries, from being a heavily armed military force with customs and security duties to being a volunteer organization tasked with search and rescue without law enforcement authority. In most countries, a typical coast guard's functions are distinct from those of the navy and the transit police, while in certain countries they have similarities to both.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency of India with jurisdiction over its territorial waters including its contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone. It was formally established on 1 February 1977 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India. It operates under the Ministry of Defence.

Lieutenant General Syed Ata HasnainPVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM & Bar is a retired General of the Indian Army. His last assignment in service was as the Military Secretary of the Indian Army. Prior to that, he commanded the Indian Army's 15 Corps in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, amongst other appointments. He has also commanded 21 Corps (Strike). In 2018, General Hasnain was appointed Chancellor of Central University of Kashmir.
The Rani Abbakka-class patrol vessel are a series of inshore patrol vessels being built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. for the Indian Coast Guard. They are based on Australian Thornycroft design. The ship, incidentally, is named after Abbakka Mahadevi, the legendary queen of Tulunadu, Karnataka who fought the Portuguese in the latter half of the 16th Century.
Vice Admiral Harish Chandra Singh Bisht, PVSM, AVSM, ADC is a former Flag Officer of the Indian Navy. He is an alumnus of the Sainik School Ghorakhal, Nainital; National Defence Academy Khadakvasla, Pune and the Naval Academy, Kochi and served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command till his retirement on 31 October 2017.
AdmiralKarambir Singh, PVSM, AVSM, ADC, is a former flag officer of Indian Navy, who served as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). The "Grey Eagle" of the Navy, he replaced Admiral Sunil Lanba as the CNS after his retirement on 31 May 2019. Prior to his ascension, Admiral Singh served as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
The Director General of the Indian Coast Guard is the head of the Indian Coast Guard. The DG ICG has their office in the Coast Guard Headquarters (CGHQ) in New Delhi. Appointed by the Government of India, the DG ICG reports to the Minister of Defence. The Director General is assisted by four Deputy Directors General, each holding the rank of inspector-general, and other senior officers heading various staff divisions. The Additional Director General of the ICG serves as the second-in-command to the Director General.

Krishnaswamy Natarajan PVSM, PTM, TM, is a retired Indian Coast Guard officer who served as the 23rd Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. He assumed the office on 1 July 2019 and served until his superannuation on 31 December 2021. He is currently the Executive Director of Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia - Information Sharing Centre in Singapore.
The President's Tatrakshak Medal is an Indian military decoration, awarded for selfless devotion, distinguished and meritorious service in Indian Coast Guard. It is conferred by the President of India every year on the occasion of national celebrations, Independence Day and Republic Day. It is being presented to the Indian Armed Forces since January 26, 1990, a few years later the Constitution of India came into existence.
The Indian Navy's Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) was approved in 2012 and operationalized in 2014. Located in Gurugram, it is the nodal agency for maritime data fusion that links information from the high seas and Indian's coastline and island territories.
Vice Admiral Melville Raymond Schunker, PVSM, AVSM was a flag officer in the Indian Navy. He served as the third Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, which he led from 1982 to 1984. He also served as the 6th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) from 1980 to 1982. He was the commissioning commanding officer of the Indian Navy's only submarine tender ship INS Amba (A54).
The Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST) is a training organisation in the Indian Navy. FOST is the authority responsible for the operational sea training of all personnel of Indian Naval and Coast Guard ships and submarines. The organisation was instituted in 1992 and is the common authority to maintain battle efficiency standards. It also provides training to navies and maritime security forces of friendly foreign countries (FFC). Headquartered in Kochi, the FOST operates under the control of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command.
The Flag Officer Defence Advisory Group (FODAG) and Advisor Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India is the title of the flag officer who heads the Offshore Defence Advisory Group. The FODAG is a two-star officer holding the rank of Rear Admiral. The current FODAG is Rear Admiral Mahesh Singh, NM who took over in December 2021.
Virender Singh Pathania PTM, TM, is an Indian Coast Guard officer serving as the 24th and the current Director General of the Indian Coast Guard. He assumed the office on 31 December 2021 upon superannuation of Director General Krishnaswamy Natarajan. He is the first helicopter pilot to hold this position. Previously he served as Additional Director General of Indian Coast Guard and Coast Guard Commander of Western Seaboard.
