Lieutenant General Rajshree Ramasethu is a former general officer of the Indian Army. She is the fifth woman in the Indian Armed Forces and third in the Indian Army to be promoted to a Three-star rank. She last served as the Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.

Early life and education

Ramasethu joined the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1979. [1]

Military career

Ramasethu was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps in December 1983. She did her post-graduation, earning the Doctor of Medicine degree in Internal Medicine. She subsequently underwent super specialisation in Nephrology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. [2]

Ramasethu has tenanted appointments of Consultant (medicine and Nephrology) at INHS Asvini, the naval hospital in Mumbai, and the Command Hospital Eastern Command in Kolkata. [3] She has also served as the Commandant of the Military Hospital, Chennai and as the Assistant Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (Medical) (ACIDS Med) at HQ IDS.

As a Major General, Ramasethu served as the Senior Consultant (Medicine) in the office of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) in New Delhi. [4] She then served as Major General Medical at the Southern Command at Pune. [3] On 16 September 2021, Ramasethu assumed the office of Director and Commandant of her alma-mater Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in the rank of Lieutenant General. [5]

Awards and decorations

Ramasethu has been awarded the Chief of the Army Staff Commendation Card three times - in 1995, 2011 and 2017. [6]

All branches of the Indian Armed Forces have women in combat roles. Women are allowed in combat services and supervisory roles. The Indian Air Force had 13.09% (2018) and 8.50% (2014) women; the Indian Navy 6% (2018) and 3% (2014); the Indian Army 3.80% (2018) and 3% (2014). As of 2020, three officers have the rank of lieutenant-general or equivalent, all in the Medical Services. In May 2021, 83 women were inducted as Jawans for the first time in the Indian Army, in the Corps of Military Police.

Military Institute of Technology (MILIT), Pune is a tri-services training institution of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of India. It trains selected officers of the three services of Indian Armed Forces and officers from friendly foreign countries for command and staff appointments. It conducts the Defence Services Technical Staff Course (DSTSC) for the Indian Army, Indian Airforce and Indian Navy Officers. The institute has a faculty of senior officers from all three services and scientists who provide specialized training on technologies, military warfare, procurement procedures and operational logistics to the student officers. The course trains officers to handle senior commands and staff appointments in the future. On successful completion of the course the officers are awarded with a degree of M.Sc in Military Technology from Pune University. Officers in the service bracket of 9 to 14 years attend this course. Most officers attending this course are of the rank of Major or Lt Col and equivalent.

Army Hospital (Research And Referral), also known as Army Hospital (R&R), AH (R&R) and RR Hospital, is the apex flagship medical care centre for the armed forces of India. Completed in the mid 1990s, the hospital, which includes a teaching hospital and nursing college, is located in Delhi Cantonment, New Delhi. It is the only Armed Forces Medical Services hospital to be commanded by a Lieutenant General rank officer and provides for 27 sub-specialties. The hospital is also meant to cater to the President of India and the chiefs of the military.

The Armed Force Medical Services (AFMS) is an inter services organisation under the Ministry of Defense, covering the Indian Armed Forces. It came into existence in 1948. The Director General Armed Forces Medical Services, a three-star officer, is the head of the Armed Forces Medical Services and is responsible to the Government for the overall medical policy in so far as they relate to the Armed Forces.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Sheila Samanta Mathai, NM, VSM is a former flag officer in the Indian Navy. She last served as the Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services. She is the fourth woman in the Indian Armed Forces to be promoted to a three-star rank, after Surgeon Vice Admiral Punita Arora, Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay and Lieutenant General Madhuri Kanitkar. She is currently the head of the department of neonatology in Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, VSM is a serving flag officer in the Indian Navy. She currently serves as the Director General Medical Services (Navy). She previously served as the Director General Medical Services (Air) in the rank of Air Marshal. Prior to that, she served as the Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College. She is the sixth woman in the Indian Armed Forces to be promoted to a three-star rank. She is the third woman officer to hold the rank of Vice Admiral in the Indian Navy, after Surgeon Vice Admirals Punita Arora and Sheila S. Mathai.
