Ram Balak Mahto was the longest serving Advocate General of the state of Bihar. He was the chief legal advisor of Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Between 1937 to 2020,only 20 Advocate Generals were appointed to act as representative of state government in legal matters,and out of them,Mahto alone was appointed six times,becoming the longest serving Advocate general. He served both Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav led government,and was first appointed to the post in the year 1980. [2] [3]
Mahto served as Advocate General during the tenure of six chief ministers of Bihar. He was appointed for the first time in the premiership of Bindeshwari Dubey in 1980. Later,he also served under Indian National Congress rule with Bhagwat Jha Azad and Satyendra Narayan Sinha as Chief Ministers. [4] Mahto served as legal advisor of Lalu Prasad Yadav and secured the candidacy of one of his sons Virendra Kumar for Teghra Vidhan Sabha constituency from Rashtriya Janata Dal. Being successful in elections of 2015,his son joined Janata Dal (United) in 2020. [5] The interregnum in the career of Mahto came when Jitan Ram Manjhi replaced him with D.K Sinha as Advocate General,however Nitish reappointed him once again after taking charge as Chief Minister in 2017. [6] He won many important cases for the Government of Bihar and played important role in controversial cases like that of Mohammad Shahabuddin,the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader accused of infamous acid attack case of Siwan. He died in October 2020 at the age of 98. He was suffering from heart disease for a long time. [9]

JD(U) is recognised as a state party in the states of Bihar,Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur and is a part of government in Bihar. JD(U) heads the government in Bihar and has remained the second largest party in Manipur. JD(U) won 16 seats in the 2019 Indian general election,making it the seventh largest party in the Lok Sabha.

Nitish Kumar is an Indian politician,who is serving as 22nd Chief Minister of Bihar since 22 February 2015,having previous held the office from 2005 to 2014 and for a short period in 2000. He is the leader of the Janata Dal (United). Previously,Kumar also served as a Union Minister as the Samata Party member.He was member of the Samata Party until 2005 and Janata Dal from 1989 to 1994. Kumar first entered politics as a member of the Janata Dal,becoming an MLA in 1985. A socialist,Kumar founded the Samata Party in 1994 along with George Fernandes. In 1996 he was elected to the Lok Sabha,and served as a Union Minister in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee,with his party joining the National Democratic Alliance. In 2003 his party merged into the Janata Dal (United),and Kumar became its leader. In 2005,the NDA won a majority in the Bihar Legislative Assembly,and Kumar became chief minister heading a coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Kishori Sinha was an Indian politician,social activist,a lifelong advocate of women's empowerment and a former two-term Member of Parliament from the Vaishali constituency. She was married to the former Chief Minister of Bihar Satyendra Narayan Sinha,who was a seven-term Member of Parliament,from the constituency of Aurangabad. Her son Nikhil Kumar had served as the Governor of Kerala and Governor of Nagaland.

There was a political crisis in Bihar state of India during February 2015 over the post of the Chief Minister of Bihar. Incumbent Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi did not vacate the post for former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar,who wanted to return,resulting in a split in the political party,JD(U). After days,the Governor asked Manjhi to prove majority in house by trust vote. Manjhi quit the post on day of vote and later Nitish Kumar took oath as chief minister again on 22 February 2015 ending the crisis.

Jitan Ram Manjhi is an Indian politician from the eastern state of Bihar who served as its 23rd Chief Minister from 20 May 2014 to 20 February 2015. He was the founding President of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM). Previously,he had served as minister for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes welfare in Nitish Kumar's cabinet. He has been a minister in several Bihar state governments,under multiple chief ministers like Chandrashekhar Singh,Bindeshwari Dubey,Satyendra Narayan Sinha,Jagannath Mishra,Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi.

Mahto or Mahato is a surname used by several castes and communities in the states of Bihar,Jharkhand,West Bengal,Uttar Pradesh and Odisha in India. Mahato is also a popular surname in Nepal. In the zamindari villages,"Mahto" was a title given to the headman of a village ward. The mahto's duties were to maintain peace in his area,and collect revenue for the zamindar. In 2022,he was selected as the Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Council.
Jayant Raj Kushwaha is an Indian politician,Member of Legislative Assembly from the Amarpur of Bihar,and Minister of Rural Work in the Government of Bihar. In the 2020 election,he defeated Jitendra Singh of the Indian National Congress. While Raj secured 33.13% of votes polled,Singh,the runner up,finished with 31.23% of the votes. Raj is a member of Janata Dal (United),the ruling party of Bihar.

Rambalak Mahato has discharged the responsibility of Advocate General during the six Governments of the state. For the first time, he was appointed Advocate General from 5 April 1985 to 11 December 1989 during the tenure of Congress Chief Minister Bindeshwari Dubey. After that, the tenures of Congress Chief Ministers Bhagwat Jha Azad and Satyendra Narayan Sinha remained in office from 12 April 1990 to 1 December 1993. He was also the Advocate General during the tenure of Chief Minister Lalu Prasad in the RJD government.
He was also the Advocate General in the coalition government led by Nitish Kumar with the support of BJP and continues to hold the post with the support of JDU. During his tenure, Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi had appointed DK Sinha as Advocate General, removing him from the post, but did not take charge. While assuming power after Manjhi, Nitish again made Rambalak Mahato the advocate general.
