Rame Church Battery was a gun battery in south east Cornwall. It was built between 1889 and 1893 to defend HMNB Devonport from Rame area and was demolished and infilled in the early 1970s.
The construction of Rame Church Battery was carried out by Messrs Reed, Blight and Co. of Plymouth between 1 June 1889 and 30 March 1893 for a cost of £5,060. [1] [2] Together with the new Tregantle Down, Penlee and Hawkins Batteries, Rame Church covered the western approaches to Plymouth Sound and was intended to prevent an enemy from bombarding Plymouth Dockyard from the region of Whitsand Bay. [3]
Rame Church Battery was designed for four RML 9-inch 12-ton guns that were adapted to fire at a high angle. This allowed shells to be dropped down to inflict maximum damage on the vulnerable upper decks of an enemy vessel rather than their heavily armoured sides. [4] Messrs Turpin and Son of Plymouth brought the guns and their carriages to the battery in 1893 and they were then mounted by a detachment of the 7th Company Western Division, Royal Artillery from Picklecombe Fort. [5] [6]
The battery's four gun emplacements were built in pairs, with the magazine in-between. The magazine contained a shell store, cartridge store and lamp room. Between both pairs of emplacements was a cartridge recess. The battery had two small shelters, one at each end of the battery, and an oil and paint store on one side of the battery. Behind the magazine and emplacements was a Royal Artillery store and a telephone room. A caretaker's quarters was built in the north-east corner of the site in 1897-98 for £603. [1]
In 1908, proposals were made for the removal of the RML guns and their replacement with two BL 9.2-inch Mk VI guns on high angle mountings. The plans were approved in 1911 and work then began on remodelling and rebuilding the battery. Two new gun emplacements were built and the original magazine was adapted to contain the lamp room and two cartridge stores, and a new section built to form a shell store. An engine room was also built by one of the emplacements to power the two guns. [1]
The battery served as an active fortification throughout World War I and most of the 1920s. The guns were recommended for removal in 1927 and the battery was disarmed in 1929. In 1972, Cornwall County Council embarked on a scheme to demolish and infill the battery. The site is now rough grassland. [3]

New Tavern Fort is an historic artillery fort in Gravesend, Kent. Dating mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries, it is an unusually well-preserved example of an 18th-century fortification and remained in use for defensive purposes until the Second World War. It was built during the American War of Independence to guard the Thames against French and Spanish raiders operating in support of the newly formed United States of America. It was redesigned and rebuilt in the mid-19th century to defend against a new generation of iron-clad French warships.
Coalhouse Fort is an artillery fort in the eastern English county of Essex. It was built in the 1860s to guard the lower Thames from seaborne attack. It stands at Coalhouse Point on the north bank of the river, at a location near East Tilbury which was vulnerable to raiders and invaders. It was the last in a series of fortifications dating back to the 15th century and was the direct successor to a smaller mid-19th century fort built on the same site. Constructed during a period of tension with France, its location on marshy ground caused problems from the start and led to a lengthy construction process. The fort was equipped with a variety of large-calibre artillery guns and the most modern defensive facilities of the time, including shell-proof casemates protected by granite facing and cast-iron shields. Its lengthy construction and the rapid pace of artillery development at the time meant that it was practically obsolete for its original purpose within a few years of its completion.
Fort Bovisand is a fort in Devon, England near the beach of Bovisand. It was built as a result of the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom which reported in 1860. Fort Gilkicker is a historic Palmerston fort built at the eastern end of Stokes Bay, Gosport, Hampshire England to dominate the key anchorage of Spithead. It was erected between 1863 and 1871 as a semi-circular arc with 22 casemates, to be armed with five twelve-inch guns, seventeen ten-inch guns and five nine-inch guns. The actual installed armament rather differed from this. In 1902 the RML guns were replaced by two 9.2-inch and two six-inch BL guns, and before the First World War the walls were further strengthened with substantial earthwork embankments. The fort was disarmed in 1956 and used for storage until 1999. On 28th July 2022, the fort was sold at auction for just under £1.4M and planning has been granted for 26 homes. Since then a massive restoration project has been underway.
