Ramesh Parambath (born 23 May 1961) is an Indian politician and a member of the 15th Puducherry Legislative Assembly. [1] He is a member of the Indian National Congress and represents Mahe constituency. [2]

Political career

Parambath started his political life as a member of the Kerala Students Union. He was the unit president of the KSU at Mahatma Gandhi Govt Arts College Mahe. He was elected as the Chairman of the College Union of Mahatma Gandhi Govt Arts College Mahe, for two consecutive terms during 1984-85 and 1985-86. He became the President of Mahe Regional Youth Congress Committee during 1989 to 1997. He was also the member of Puducherry DCC. He was elected as the Municipal Chairman of Mahe Municipal Council from 2006 to 2011. [3] [4] Currently he is the President of Block Congress Committee, Mahe region. [5]

In the 2021 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election, he regained the Mahe Assembly Constituency for the Congress in a tight race by defeating LDF independent N. Haridasan Master. [6] [7]

Personal life

Ramesh was born at Palloor on 23 May 1961 to Parambath Kannan and K. Bharathy. He is a B.Com graduate. He is married to Sayana and the couple have two sons Yadhukul Parambath and Anand Ram.[ citation needed ]

The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian union territory (UT) of Puducherry, which comprises four districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahé and Yanam. Out of eight union territories of India, only three have legislatures and they are Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. After delimitation shortly after its formation, the Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 seats, of which 5 are reserved for candidates from scheduled castes and 3 members are nominated by the Government of India. 30 out of 33 Members are elected directly by the people on the basis of universal adult franchise and the remaining three are nominated by the central government. These nominated members enjoy same powers as elected members of the assembly.

Mahé municipality is the seat of local administration of the Mahé Region which belongs to the Union Territory of Puducherry. Mahé Municipality has been in existence for more than 200 years since its establishment under the French Regime. Mahé Municipal area comprises 9 km2 with a single Assembly Constituency. The last Mayor and the first Chairman of this municipality was Late. V. N. Purushothaman. Municipal Council was not in existence with effect from 1978. Thereafter the Regional Administrator, Mahé / Regional Executive Officer, Mahé used to exercise the power of the chairman and Vice-chairman in the capacity of special officer of Mahé Municipal Council. S. Ramesh was an Indian politician. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, the lower house from the Uttarahalli in Karnataka as a member of the Indian National Congress. Ramesh was also a film producer and was former Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce President. He had also acted in the film 'Gokarna' produced by Upendra. He had been a Minister in the Bangarappa government in 1990 and been a trade union leader. Ramesh started his career in the youth congress and was President of the Pradesh Youth Congress for a brief period. He unsuccessfully contested from Krishnaraja constituency of Mysore and M. K. Somashekar of Janata Dal (Secular) was victorious during 2004 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections.

Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College, Mahe, is a general degree college located in Chalakkara, Mahé, Puducherry. It was established in the year 1970. The college is affiliated with Pondicherry University. This college offers different courses in arts, commerce, and science.

Mohammed Afzal-ul Amin, popularly known as M.A. Amin, was an Indian statesman, politician and social worker from Cuttack, Odisha. He served as the general secretary of Utkal Pradesh Congress Committee during Biren Mitra's chief ministership. Afzal-ul was the Vice Chairman and later the Chairman of Cuttack Municipality and also the President of Odisha Mohammadan Association.
