Randy Bush is a fellow at Arrcus and a research fellow at Internet Initiative Japan. He was among the inaugural inductees into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012, given by the Internet Society. [1]
Bush has been working in the computer industry since 1966. He began with programming languages and specifically compilers. In 1977 he co-founded Northwest Microcomputer Systems with several other businessmen and computer engineers in Coos Bay, Oregon. The company released the 85/P, a Pascal development microcomputer, in 1978. [2] [3]
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bush played a role in bringing the Internet to South Africa. [4]
Bush was the senior engineer of the Verio founding team in the late 1990s, and worked there for five years as the Vice President of IP Networking. [5] He was the Principal Engineer at RAINet in the early 90s, which was later acquired by Verio at which time he joined Verio. He was the founder of the Network Startup Resource Center and worked there as a PI.
Bush has served as a member of the IESG. At APNIC, he has been the Routing SIG Co-Chair, Policy SIG Co-Chair, and the Fees Working Group Chair. He was on the founding board of ARIN, helped start AFRINIC, NANOG, etc. He was the chair of the ACM Internet Governance Committee. Bush also co-founded the Non-Commercial Domain Name Holders' Constituency within ICANN's DNSO.
Bush was one of the core architects and designers of the Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI), Route Origin Validation, BGPsec, and a number of other associated technologies.
He has also been the technical contact for the .bz ccTLD, [6] and has executed the technical operations for .ng. [7] [8]
Bush was a chair of the IETF Working Group on the DNS for a decade. [9] [10] Randy has been influential in setting up Internet networks in parts of Latin America, Southern and Eastern Africa, etc. [11] He has also served as a Corporate researcher at AT&T for more than a year. [12]
On November 27, 2023, at the 87th RIPE meeting in Rome, Bush was honored with the Rob Blokzijl Award. [13]
Harald Tveit Alvestrand is a Norwegian computer scientist. He was chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) from 2001 until 2005, succeeding Fred Baker. Within the IETF, Alvestrand was earlier the chair of the Areas for Applications from 1995 until 1997, and of Operations and Management in 1998.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is a global multistakeholder group and nonprofit organization headquartered in the United States responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the namespaces and numerical spaces of the Internet, ensuring the Internet's stable and secure operation. ICANN performs the actual technical maintenance work of the Central Internet Address pools and DNS root zone registries pursuant to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) function contract. The contract regarding the IANA stewardship functions between ICANN and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the United States Department of Commerce ended on October 1, 2016, formally transitioning the functions to the global multistakeholder community.
Joyce Kathleen Reynolds was an American computer scientist who played a significant role in developing protocols underlying the Internet. She authored or co-authored many RFCs, most notably those introducing and specifying the Telnet, FTP, and POP protocols.
Stephen D. Crocker is an American Internet pioneer. In 1969, he created the ARPA "Network Working Group" and the Request for Comments series. He served as chair of the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) from 2011 through 2017.
A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet after the root domain. The top-level domain names are installed in the root zone of the name space. For all domains in lower levels, it is the last part of the domain name, that is, the last non-empty label of a fully qualified domain name. For example, in the domain name www.example.com, the top-level domain is .com. Responsibility for management of most top-level domains is delegated to specific organizations by the ICANN, an Internet multi-stakeholder community, which operates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and is in charge of maintaining the DNS root zone.

An autonomous system (AS) is a collection of connected Internet Protocol (IP) routing prefixes under the control of one or more network operators on behalf of a single administrative entity or domain, that presents a common and clearly defined routing policy to the Internet. Each AS is assigned an autonomous system number (ASN), for use in Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing. Autonomous System Numbers are assigned to Local Internet Registries (LIRs) and end-user organizations by their respective Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), which in turn receive blocks of ASNs for reassignment from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). The IANA also maintains a registry of ASNs which are reserved for private use.

WHOIS is a query and response protocol that is used for querying databases that store an Internet resource's registered users or assignees. The protocol stores and delivers database content in a human-readable format. The current iteration of the WHOIS protocol was drafted by the Internet Society, and is documented in RFC 3912.
IPv4 address exhaustion is the depletion of the pool of unallocated IPv4 addresses. Because the original Internet architecture had fewer than 4.3 billion addresses available, depletion has been anticipated since the late 1980s when the Internet started experiencing dramatic growth. This depletion is one of the reasons for the development and deployment of its successor protocol, IPv6. IPv4 and IPv6 coexist on the Internet.

Robert "Rob" Blokzijl was a Dutch physicist and computer scientist at the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (NIKHEF), and an early internet pioneer. He was founding member and chairman of RIPE, the Réseaux IP Européens, the European Internet Registrar organisation.
John C. Klensin is a political scientist and computer science professional who is active in Internet-related issues.
The Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) is a computer network communications protocol standardized by a working group at the Internet Engineering Task Force in 2015, after experimental developments and thorough discussions. It is a successor to the WHOIS protocol, used to look up relevant registration data from such Internet resources as domain names, IP addresses, and autonomous system numbers.
Northwest Microcomputer Systems, Inc. (NMS), was a short-lived, privately owned American computer company active from 1977 to the early 1980s and based out of Oregon. The company was co-founded by several computer engineers and investors, including Randy Bush.
