Ratul Puri is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hindustan Powerprojects. [1] [2] In 2002, Puri was the Ernst & Young "Entrepreneur of the Year" award for his contribution towards manufacturing industry in India. [3] [4]

Biography

Ratul is an alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University, the Pittsburgh-based global research university with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, mathematics, and computer science. [5]

Ratul in 2008 started the business of power generation with Hindustan Powerprojects. [6] Puri is the nephew of Congress party politician and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath. [7]

Recognition

Ratul is part of the many think tanks that are evolving solutions to usher energy sufficiency in India and was part of the World Economic Forum as one of the Young Global leaders. [8] [9] In 2007, Business Today rated him among the "Top 21 Young Leaders" in the country who could shape India’s destiny in the 21st century. Dataquest magazine has named him amongst the "Young Brigade in the IT Industry". [10] He was declared CMO Asia CEO of the Year award. In 2014, Ratul Puri was recognized as the ‘CEO of the year’ by World Brand Congress [11] [12] and acknowledged for his contribution to the infrastructure sector by ET Infrastructure. [13]

In News

In November 2019, the Enforcement Directorate filed a charge sheet against Puri and his company Moser Baer for money laundering and bank fraud in the Agusta Westland chopper scam. [14]

Moser Baer was an Indian multinational manufacturer of optical discs, storage devices, CDs, DVDs, based in New Delhi. The company was present in over 100 countries, serviced through 15 marketing offices and representatives, and had tie-ups with other optical media storage manufacturers. Its products were manufactured at its three plants in New Delhi, which employed over 8,000 people. The company had subsidiaries that manufactured photovoltaic cells and modules using crystalline silicon and thin film technologies.

Puri is an Indian Punjabi surname of Khatri, derived from a Chandravanshi Indo Aryan Puru tribe of King Porus.

Also referred to as the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal, the Indian helicopter bribery scandal by Congress led UPA Government refers to a multimillion-dollar corruption case in India, wherein money was paid to middlemen and Indian officials in 2006 and 2007 to purchase helicopters for high level politicians. As per the CBI, this amounted to 2.5 billion (US$31 million), transferred through bank accounts in the UK and UAE.
