The Raumanmeri school shooting was a school shooting that occurred on 25 January 1989 at the Raumanmeri secondary school in Rauma, Finland. It was the first school shooting in the history of Finland. A 14-year-old student at the Raumanmeri secondary school fatally shot two of his classmates using a pistol that belonged to his father. The shooter had claimed to be a victim of bullying. Due to the perpetrator being under the age of 15, he never faced any criminal charges for the attack.

Shooting

The shooter, who was 14 at the time, entered the classroom at approximately 7:55. [1] As the morning assembly was nearing its end, the shooter grabbed a Mauser-branded pistol, which belonged to his father, from his backpack. It was well known in class that the shooter was interested in guns, and he had presented them to others before. [2] He also had a Parabellum pistol in his backpack, which he did not use. [3] The shooter, who was described to appear nervous by an eyewitness, raised the pistol and attempted to fire at a classmate. [2] The gun didn't go off, which resulted in the shooter attempting to fire three times [3] before the gun finally went off, after the shooter had hit it against his thigh, fatally wounding his classmate. Panic broke out among the students in class and many of them attempted to flee. [4] The shooter got up from his desk and made his way to the back of the classroom, where he shot at another student. The student fell to the ground, and attempted to shield himself using his backpack, but a second bullet pierced through it. [1] The shooter then shot at an escaping boy, [1] but missed as the boy fell to the ground before the shot was fired. [1] [4] [2] After fatally wounding two of his classmates, the shooter ran out the backdoor of the school with his backpack and two of his father's guns with him. [2] [4]

As the paramedics arrived at the school, the two students that had been shot were still alive. The emergency status of the situation wasn't fully understood yet, and the first paramedics at the scene requested for more ambulances to arrive once they realised the situation. [4] The desks of the class had been pushed in a way which made it so that the second victim wasn't immediately spotted. Both students shot passed away later the same day at a hospital. [3] [5]

The school decided to let the students go home, which made the search for the perpetrator slightly more difficult. [3] The perpetrator of the shooting had prepared for an escape, as he had a sleeping bag with him and he had left two bicycles along the escape route. [6] A local radio, Ramona, broadcast a description of the shooter on the radio and said if a person matching the description were to come and ask someone for something, for example water, it was to be given to him and then reported to the police. At about 9:30, a woman living on Klamilantie heard a knock on her door, and it was a person matching the perpetrator's description asking for water, which the woman gave to him. The woman heard the broadcast by Ramona later that day, after which she immediately reported it to the police. [2]

During the escape, the shooter purposefully walked along a small river, to hide his scent from the police dogs. [2] Eventually the police found his backpack and the two guns belonging to his father in a forest. A short time after, a police helicopter spotted the shooter himself, who was trying to hide. The shooter was captured at 17:00 at Eurajoki, near the town of Hankkila. [3] During the ride to a police station, the driver asked the shooter how he felt, to which he simply responded with; "Did the third one also die?" [2]

Aftermath

After the shooting, it became apparent that the shooter felt himself to be a victim of bullying and targeted students that he had disagreements with. He had also said he wanted to "eliminate" three people who weren't nice to him. [7] [8] The perpetrator had trained in target shooting with his father, who the guns used in the shooting belonged to. [7] [2] The school however denied that the shooter had ever been bullied. In some speeches made to the public about the shooting, violent television shows were blamed. [6] The police report came to a conclusion that the shooting wasn't the result of bullying, but that the shooter had a mental breakdown for other reasons. In a psychiatric evaluation the shooter was found to have committed the shooting in an unstable space of mind. [2]

Due to the perpetrator being under the age of 15, he never faced any criminal charges for the attack. [6] [9] It was the first school shooting in the history of Finland. [8]

The Erfurt massacre was a school shooting that occurred on 26 April 2002 at the Gutenberg-Gymnasium, a secondary school in Erfurt, Germany. 19-year-old expelled student Robert Steinhäuser shot and killed 16 people, including 13 staff members, two students, and one policeman before committing suicide. One person was also wounded by a bullet fragment. According to students, he ignored them and aimed only for the teachers and administrators, although two students were unintentionally killed by shots fired through a locked door.

The shooting was perpetrated by then fourteen-year-old student James Scott Newman who shot and injured two 14-year-old eighth grade classmates with a .38-caliber revolver that had belonged to his parents. Newman was arrested and charged as an adult on charges of attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon and use of a firearm by a minor but later pleaded guilty to different charges of two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, in which he had received sentencing as a juvenile. Kayla Renee Rolland was an American six-year-old girl from Mount Morris Township, Michigan, United States, who was fatally shot on February 29, 2000 by a six-year-old classmate at Buell Elementary School in the Beecher Community School District. The Jokela school shooting also known as the Jokela High School massacre occurred on 7 November 2007, at Jokela High School in the town of Jokela, Tuusula, Finland. The gunman, 18-year-old Pekka-Eric Auvinen, entered the school that morning armed with a semi-automatic pistol. He killed eight people and wounded one person in the toe before shooting himself in the head; twelve others were also injured by flying glass or sprained ankles. Auvinen died later that evening in a Helsinki hospital.

The Kauhajoki school shooting occurred on 23 September 2008 at the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK) in Kauhajoki, Finland. The gunman, 22-year-old student Matti Juhani Saari, shot and killed ten people with a Walther P22 Target semi-automatic pistol, before shooting himself in the head. He died a few hours later at Tampere University Hospital. One woman was injured but was in a stable condition.

The response to a school shooting that occurred at the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences in Kauhajoki, a city in Western Finland, on 23 September 2008 was widespread. In the shooting, 22-year-old culinary arts student Matti Juhani Saari shot and killed ten people before committing suicide. Eight people had been killed ten months before in the Jokela school shooting in southern Finland.

The Winnenden school shooting occurred on the morning of 11 March 2009 at the Albertville-Realschule, a secondary school in Winnenden, southwestern Germany, followed by a shootout at a car dealership in nearby Wendlingen. The shooting spree resulted in 16 deaths, including the suicide of the perpetrator, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer, who had graduated from the school a year earlier. Nine people were injured during the incident.

The gunman, then 17-year-old Anatcha Boonkwan fatally shot two of his fellow students, and injured four others, using a semi-automatic pistol. This was apparently due to his argument with classmate Sicharat Kumsuk, who was his actual target.

In the morning of October 20, 2017, an unnamed 14-year-old student of the private school Goyases, in Goiânia, Brazil opened fire against his classmates with a .40-caliber Taurus PT100 pistol, leaving two dead, and four injured. He tried to commit suicide but was convinced not to by a school teacher, being arrested minutes after the incident.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kuopio school stabbing</span> 2019 mass stabbing in Finland

The Kuopio school stabbing occurred on 1 October 2019 at Savo Vocational College in Kuopio, Northern Savonia, Finland. Armed with a sabre, 25-year-old student Joel Otto Aukusti Marin killed a female student and wounded nine others. He also carried an air pistol which was not used during the attack; it was initially mistaken for a real firearm. The attack ended when a policeman shot and wounded Marin.

On January 6, 2023, American school teacher Abby Zwerner was seriously injured when a six-year-old male student shot her while she was teaching in her classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. The boy had brought from home, in his backpack, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol belonging to his mother.
