Justice Ravindra Maithani (born 25 June 1965,in Chamoli district) is an Indian Judge at the High Court of Uttarakhand at Nainital since December 2018. [1] He is due to retire not earlier than June 2027. [2]
Maithani obtained his Bachelors in Science and Law from Garhwal University at Srinagar,Uttarakhand. [3] Thereafter,he joined the Judicial services of the undivided Uttar Pradesh state in 1986 and worked at various district-level courts. Maithani has also been Deputy Director of the Institute of Judicial Training Research at Lucknow,a Member of the Uttarakhand Trade Tax Tribunal and an Additional Director at the Uttarakhand Judicial &Legal Academy,Nainital. [1] [3] In March 2009,he was appointed the Registrar General of the Uttarakhand High Court post which he was sent to the Supreme Court of India as Registrar in September 2010. Maithani was also the Secretary General of the Indian Supreme Court from May 2013 till November 2014.
A Supreme Court Collegium consisting of Justices Ranjan Gogoi CJI,Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph recommended his name to the President of India in October 2018 for appointment as a Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court. [4] Maithani assumed charge of his office on 3 December 2018. The oath was administered to him by Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan. [5]

Pendency of court cases in India is the delay in the disposal of cases (lawsuits) to provide justice to the aggrieved person or organisation by judicial courts at all levels. The judiciary in India works in hierarchy at three levels - federal or supreme court,state or high courts,and district courts. The court cases is categorised into two types - civil and criminal. In 2022,the total number of pending cases of all types and at all levels rose to 50 million or 5 crores,including over 169,000 court cases pending for more than 30 years in district and high courts. 4.3 crore out of 5 crore cases,i.e more than 85% cases,are pending in district courts as of December 2022. Government itself is the biggest litigant,having 50% of the pending cases being sponsored by the state.
