Rebecca-Aimee Diaconescu (born 24 April 2006) is a Romanian swimmer who specializes in the freestyle event. She competes at the collegiate level for the University of Michigan. She will represent Romania at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [1]

Early life and education

Diaconescu attended Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2022, during her sophomore year, she won the Class 5A state championship in the 100 butterfly and was second in the 200 freestyle. [2]

In January 2023, Diaconescu verbally committed to Louisville. [3] In November 2023 she changed her commitment to Michigan for the 2024–25 season. [4]

Career

In July 2022, Diaconescu represented Romania at the 2022 European Junior Swimming Championships where she won a silver medal in the 4×100 metre mixed freestyle relay with a Romanian record time of 3:29.35. [5] The next month she competed at the 2022 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and won a silver medal in the 4×100 metre mixed freestyle relay. [6]

In April 2024 at the Romanian Championships she set a Romanian record in the 100 metre freestyle with a time of 55.15, surpassing the previous record of 55.40 set by Tamara Costache in 1986. [7] [8] In July 2024, Diaconescu represented Romania at the 2024 European Junior Swimming Championships and won a silver medal in the 200 metre freestyle with a time of 1:58.97. [9] She will represent Romania at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [10] [11]

Personal life

Diaconescu is the daughter of Ioana Diaconescu and Nicolae Papuc. [12] Her mother competed in swimming at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics, while her father competed in the modern pentathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics. [13]

Savard also holds the Canadian junior butterfly record in the 200-metre event. She won the gold medal at the 100-metre butterfly event at the 2013 Summer Universiade, held in Kazan. Savard also won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 100-metre butterfly in Glasgow, where she set the Commonwealth record in the process. At the same games, she won a bronze medal as a member of the women's 4×100-metre medley relay team.

Jácint Simon is a Hungarian former swimmer, who specialized in middle-distance freestyle events. He represented Hungary at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and also trained for the swim team at Ferencvárosi Torna Club in Budapest under his longtime coach Csaba Sós.

Taylor Madison Ruck is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She won two Olympic bronze medals as part of Canada's women's 4×100 metre and 4×200 metre freestyle relay teams at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ruck won eight medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Her eight medal performance of one gold, five silver, and two bronze tied her with three other athletes for the most all-time at a single Commonwealth Games, as well as making her the most decorated Canadian female athlete ever at a single Commonwealth Games. Ruck is the all-time leading medallist at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships having won nine gold, two silver, and two bronze over the course of the 2015 and 2017 editions.

Her country's most decorated Olympian, Oleksiak rose to fame during the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she became the first Canadian to win four medals in the same Summer Games, and the country's youngest Olympic champion with her gold medal win in the 100 m freestyle. She was the first athlete born in the 2000s to claim an Olympic gold medal in an individual event. Her success led to her being awarded the 2016 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete, the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as Canada's top female athlete for 2016, and a member of the Canadian Press team of the year. Five years later she won three additional medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, breaking the national record for Olympic medals.

Mallory Comerford is an American competitive swimmer specializing in freestyle events. Comerford was the winner of five gold medals at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. She won USA Swimming's Golden Goggle Award for Breakout Performer of the Year for 2017. The following year, Comerford won eight medals in individual and relay events at the 2018 World Swimming Championships.

He also holds the junior world record in the short course 100-metre freestyle.
