Rebecca Caroline Thompson is an American physicist, popular science writer, and head of the Office of Education and Public Outreach at Fermilab. Her first book, Fire, Ice, and Physics, explores the science of Game of Thrones , and was published by MIT Press in 2019. She was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2016.
Thompson was born in Chicago and raised near Annapolis, Maryland. Her father was a physicist and her mother a high school principal. [1] Thompson was encouraged by one of her friends to take a class in physics, and enjoyed it so much she decided to study it at university. [1] She was the youngest person in Delaware to get her skydiving license. [2]
Thompson majored in physics at Bryn Mawr College. She moved to the University of Texas at Austin for her graduate studies, where she studied pattern formation in buckled membranes using computational modeling. She worked under the supervision of Michael Marder in the Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics. Specifically, she looked at the morphology of nano-flowers that form at the tip of silicon nanowires as well as the formation of ripples in sheets of graphene. [3] The silicon nanowire tips form nano-flowers when in the presence of different gases. In the nano-flower formation process, the nanowires extend, and intricate patterns of silicon oxide start to form. [1] She has shown that the nanowires extend more in the presence of gold, and that nano-flowers only form in the presence of oxygen. [1] She reported that ripples in graphene sheets can be understood by considering the adsorption of hydroxide molecules in random sites across the graphene layers. [4] The process of adsorbing hydroxide causes the carbon – carbon bonds to extend, which can result in static buckling. [4] During her graduate studies, she became more interested in teaching and doing physics outreach. [2]
In 2008, Thompson joined the American Physical Society as Head of Public Outreach. At APS, Thompson created the comic series Spectra: The Original Laser Superhero. [5] The series, illustrated by Kerry G. Johnson and published by Physics Central, [6] followed a middle school student (Lucy Hene) with laser-related superpowers. [7] [8] These included being able to pass through transparent surfaces, change colors depending on her levels of energy and play compact discs. [8] The comic book was popular amongst physicist and comic book readers, and was part of the annual comic book convention San Diego Comi-Con'. [7]
Thompson was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2016. [9] Thompson is a fan of Game of Thrones , and wrote Fire, Ice, and Physics, the Science of Game of Thrones for MIT Press in 2019. [10] [11] In 2019 Thompson joined Fermilab as Head of the Office of Education and Public Outreach. [12] The American Association for the Advancement of Science selected Thompson as a fellow in 2023. Mildred Dresselhaus, known as the "Queen of Carbon Science", was an American physicist, materials scientist, and nanotechnologist. She was an institute professor and professor of both physics and electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also served as the president of the American Physical Society, the chair of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as the director of science in the US Department of Energy under the Bill Clinton Government. Dresselhaus won numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, the Enrico Fermi Award, the Kavli Prize and the Vannevar Bush Award.
Kerry G. Johnson is an African-American cartoonist, graphic designer, art director, caricaturist and children's book illustrator. He specializes in caricatures but has created cartoons, illustrations and news graphic work in his career in news and publication design.
Marcela Silvia Carena Lopez is an Argentine theoretical physicist, and since November 2024 the Executive Director of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, ON, Canada. Prior to taking this position she was a Distinguished Scientist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, where she was Director of the lab's Theory Division. She is also a professor at the University of Chicago, where she is a member of the Enrico Fermi Institute and the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics.
Elisa Molinari is an Italian physicist from the University of Modena and CNR, Italy. She has been primarily interested in computational materials science and nanotechnologies, and she has been particularly active in the theory of fundamental properties of low-dimensional structures, in the simulation of nanodevices, in the development of related computational methods. She also has a continuing interest in scientific imaging and communication.

Heike E. Riel is a nanotechnologist known for developing OLED displays. Beyond her work on display technology, she is an expert in molecular electronics and nanoscale semiconductors.
Deji Akinwande is a Nigerian-American professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with courtesy affiliation with Materials Science at the University of Texas at Austin. He was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2016 from Barack Obama. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the African Academy of Sciences, the Materials Research Society (MRS), and the IEEE.
Sekazi Kauze Mtingwa: is an American theoretical high-energy physicist. He is a co-recipient of the 2017 Robert R. Wilson Prize for Achievement in the Physics of Particle Accelerators. He is the first African-American to be awarded the prize. Mtingwa was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2008 for "his definitive treatment of Intrabeam scattering, his contributions to the wakefield acceleration, and his early recognition of the fixed target physics potential of the next generation electron-positron collider." He also co-founded the National Society of Black Physicists in 1977 and served in various other national and international initiatives.
Marija Drndic is the Fay R. and Eugene L. Langberg Professor of Physics at the University of Pennsylvania. She works on two-dimensional materials and novel spectroscopic techniques.
Frances Mary Ross is the Ellen Swallow Richards Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work involves the use of in situ transmission electron microscopy to study nanostructure formation. In 2018 she was awarded the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy Hatsujiro Hashimoto Medal. She contributed to the discovery of the top quark in 1995 and Higgs Boson in 2012.
Geralyn P. (Sam) Zeller is an American neutrino physicist at Fermilab. At Fermilab, she is a participant in the MiniBooNE experiment, co-spokesperson for the MicroBooNE experiment, and deputy head of the Neutrino Division.
Tawfique Hasan is a Bangladeshi scientist who is Professor of NanoEngineering at the University of Cambridge. He leads the nanoengineering group in the Cambridge graphene centre and serves as deputy head of division B in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.
Cecilia Elena Gerber is an Argentine-American experimental high-energy physicist whose research involves massive elementary particles: the top quark and Higgs boson.
