Recess Therapy is a web series produced by Doing Things Media in which host and creator Julian Shapiro-Barnum interviews children between the ages of two and nine years old playing outside in New York City. The interviews have been uploaded on YouTube and Instagram since 2021.
The reason it’s called "Recess Therapy" is that the original idea was that I was going to bring things that I was struggling with to children and, like, get advice from them.

Shapiro-Barnum grew up in three households in Brooklyn, raised by five gay parents: two fathers and three mothers. His parents jokingly called him the "Mayor of Everywhere" in reference to his outgoing nature and desire to talk to people. He began taking an improv class in third grade, beginning a string of formal acting activity that would continue through his graduation from Boston University in 2021 with a BFA in acting. [1]
After a 2020 study abroad program in Madrid was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shapiro-Barnum returned to Brooklyn where he became involved in the Black Lives Matter protests in New York City. He filmed a scripted talk show called The Social Distance with his fathers through The Tank, followed by an unscripted show titled How Are You Doing Right Now? in which he interviewed strangers on the sidewalk, and a similar show called I'm Interested in which he played truth or dare with strangers. In 2021, while editing dog videos for online production company Doing Things Media, Shapiro-Barnum decided to begin a project focused on children's ability to remain positive during the pandemic. He successfully pitched the idea to management, and the media company provided him with a producer, editor and platform for what would become Recess Therapy. [1] The project began as part of his senior project at Boston University. [3]
Recess Therapy is a web series with short video clips published on Instagram and TikTok, linked to the full interviews which are made available on YouTube. [1] [4] Interview topics vary and have included climate change, the economy, and "peeing your pants." He was inspired how “kids in the playground remained joyous despite the pandemic’s perturbations.” In an interview with The New York Times, Shapiro-Barnum said, “The reason it’s called Recess Therapy is that the original idea was that I was going to bring things that I was struggling with to children and, like, get advice from them.” [1]
Production shoots for Recess Therapy usually take about four and a half hours, yielding an average of fifteen interviews. Filming is done by Julia Ty Goldberg and Charlotte Weinman, former college classmates of Shapiro-Barnum. [1] [5]
At the start of 2022, the series was featured on Today as a "Fave Follow". [4] [6] In February 2022, a segment on ABC News described it as a "popular digital series warming the hearts of millions". [3] However, in an interview with The New York Times two weeks later, Shapiro-Barnum shared that an episode focused on LGBT pride led to the loss of approximately 60,000 followers in the days that followed. In August 2022, a video featuring a boy describing corn as "a big lump with knobs" was remixed by The Gregory Brothers called "It's Corn" quickly gained attention on TikTok later that month. [7]
Recess Therapy surpassed 2.4 million social media followers in September 2022. [6] [8]
In December 2022, Shapiro-Barnum received the Family Entertainment Safe Streaming Hero Award at Variety's inaugural Family Entertainment Awards Dinner. [9]

Rolie Polie Guacamole is an American kindie rock band from Brooklyn, New York made up of Frank Gallo and Andrew Tuzhilin. The band has recorded 11 albums and won three Parents' Choice Awards. On January 19, 2024 Recess Therapy released a video called "How to make a #1 hit song in a day" where Julian Shapiro-Barnum asks Ike to list his three favorite artists. Ike responds "Rolie Polie Guacamole, Tom Petty, & The Beatles." It instantly went viral with over 42 million views across Tik Tok & Instagram.
TikTok, whose mainland Chinese counterpart is Douyin, is a short-form video hosting service owned by Chinese internet company ByteDance. It hosts user-submitted videos, which can range in duration from three seconds to 60 minutes. It can be accessed with a smartphone app.
Charli Grace D'Amelio is an American social media personality. She was a competitive dancer for over a decade before starting her social media career in 2019, when she began posting dance videos on the video-sharing platform TikTok. She quickly amassed a large following and subsequently became the most-followed creator on the platform in March 2020 until she was surpassed by Khaby Lame in June 2022. With over 155 million followers, she is the second most-followed person on TikTok, as of 2024.
The Hype House is a collective of teenage TikTok personalities based in Moorpark, California as well as the name of the mansion in which some of the creators live. It is a collaborative content-creation house, allowing the different influencers and content creators to make videos together easily.
Addison Rae Easterling is an American dancer, actress and singer. Rae rose to fame on TikTok and has amassed over 88 million followers, making her the fifth most-followed individual on the platform.

Triller was released for iOS and Android in 2015, and initially operated as a video editing app before adding social networking features.
Kadie Karen Diekmeyer, popularly known as That Vegan Teacher, is a Canadian animal rights activist, internet personality and former educator, mainly known for promoting veganism. Before she started her online career, Diekmeyer was a nurse and later an ESL teacher but eventually left the latter job at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Diekmeyer is known for her TikTok and YouTube accounts that promote veganism. Some of Diekmeyer's content has been controversial, and has prompted accusations of racism and homophobia.

Noah Timothy Beck is an American influencer and actor, most known for his content on TikTok. In 2019, Beck was a midfielder for the Portland Pilots men's soccer team. Beck's content includes dances and skits to audio clips of songs, movies, and TV shows. Beck has 34.1 million followers on TikTok, 9 million on Instagram, and over 1.5 million YouTube subscribers. TikTok listed Beck as one of the Top 10 breakout content creators of 2020. In 2023, he created the underwear brand IPHIS.
Khabane "Khaby" Lame is a Senegalese-Italian social media personality. He is known for his TikTok videos, in which he silently mocks overly complicated "life hack" videos. In 2022, he was listed in Fortune's 40 Under 40 and Forbes' 30 Under 30. He also served as a juror on the 2023 edition of the television show Italia's Got Talent. As of 2024, he is the most-followed user on TikTok.

Libs of TikTok is a handle for various far-right and anti-LGBT social-media accounts operated by Chaya Raichik, a former real estate agent. Raichik uses the accounts to repost content created by left-wing and LGBT people on TikTok, and on other social-media platforms, often with hostile, mocking, or derogatory commentary. The accounts promote hate speech and transphobia, and spread false claims, especially relating to medical care of transgender children. The Twitter account, also known by the handle @LibsofTikTok, has nearly 3 million followers as of February 2024 and has become influential among American conservatives and the political right. Libs of TikTok's social-media accounts have received several temporary suspensions and a permanent suspension from TikTok.

Dylan Mulvaney is an American social media personality known for detailing her gender transition in daily videos published on TikTok since early 2022. Before coming out as a transgender woman and launching her internet career, Mulvaney performed as a stage actor in Old Globe Theatre, Off-Broadway, and Broadway productions. She gained a higher profile on social media platforms after her interview with U.S. president Joe Biden at the White House, during which they spoke about transgender rights. After Bud Light sent a beer can to Mulvaney for an Instagram promotion in 2023, American conservatives led a boycott of the brand.
"It's Corn" is a song by The Gregory Brothers that remixes portions of an August 2022 interview of Tariq Tull on Recess Therapy. The song was released in August 28, 2022 on YouTube and went viral on social media platforms. After the interview, seven-year-old Tariq was dubbed the CEO of Corn, and nicknamed the "Corn Kid".
Rachel Griffin Accurso, better known as Ms. Rachel, is an American YouTuber, social media personality, songwriter, and educator. She is best known for creating the YouTube series Songs for Littles, a children's music series focused on language development for toddlers and infants.
Akintoye Adeyemi Asalu, known mononymously as Akintoye, is a Nigerian-born Canadian rapper and social media personality. He gained prominence on TikTok, where he has almost 3 million followers as of May 2023 and has gone viral several times, including with the 2022 single "Pizazz". He has released five studio albums and been featured on songs with Charlie Curtis-Beard, Connor Price, and Idris Elba. Outside of music, he voices the recurring character of Anthony on the Disney Channel series Hamster & Gretel.
