Reed Stringer (born January 26, 1979) [1] is an American college football coach. He is the interim head football coach and general manager for the University of Southern Mississippi, positions he has held since 2024. Before becoming interim head coach in October 2024, he had served in various capacities at Southern Miss since 2018.

Career

Stringer grew up in Canton, Mississippi, and attended the Canton Academy, where he played football and basketball. [2] Stringer played offensive tackle at Delta State from 1998–2001. The 1998 and 2000 teams won the Gulf South Conference; the 2000 team won the Division II national championship. [3] Stringer was a graduate assistant at Mississippi State in 2003 under head coach Jackie Sherrill, and was retained when Sylvester Croom succeeded Sherrill for the 2004 season. Croom promoted Stringer to tight ends coach, his first on-field role, in 2005. [3]

New Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Mark Hudspeth hired Stringer as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 2011. [4] Stringer and Hudspeth first met when Stringer was a tackle at Delta State and Hudspeth was offensive coordinator there (1999–2000). They overlapped again at Mississippi State in 2009. [5] Stringer remained at Louisiana-Lafayette until the end of the 2017 season when Hudspeth was fired. [6]

For the 2018 season, Stringer joined Jay Hopson's staff at Southern Miss as a quality control coach. He succeeded Brock Hays as tight ends coach in 2019. [7] Stringer remained at Southern Miss during a chaotic 2020 season in which Southern Miss had three coaches: Hopson, Scotty Walden, Tim Billings. New permanent head coach Will Hall, hired for the 2021 season, retained Stringer and promoted him to assistant head coach and general manager. [8] Southern Miss fired Hall seven games into the 2024 season and named Stringer the interim head coach. [9]

Will Hall is an American college football coach. He most recently served as the head coach for the University of Southern Mississippi. Hall served as the head football coach at the University of West Alabama from 2011 to 2013 and at the University of West Georgia 2014 to 2016. He also served as offensive coordinator for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2017. He grew up in Mississippi and attended the University of North Alabama where he played quarterback from 2002 to 2003. He won the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2003. He began his coaching career in 2004 and held assistant coaching positions at Presbyterian, Henderson State, Southwest Baptist, Arkansas-Monticello and West Alabama.

James Walter Hopson is an American college football coach and former player. He is the cornerbacks coach for the University of South Alabama, a position he has held since 2023. He has been a head coach at Southern Miss and Alcorn State. In the latter role, he was the first white head football coach in the history of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, an organization composed of historically black colleges and universities. Hopson has also served as an assistant coach at Tulane, Delta State, LSU, Florida, Marshall, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Michigan, and Memphis.

The 2016 Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns football team represented the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by sixth-year head coach Mark Hudspeth and played their home games at Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns were members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 6–7, 5–3 in Sun Belt play to finish in fifth place. They were invited to the New Orleans Bowl where they lost to Southern Miss.

The Ragin' Cajuns played their home games at Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana, and competed in the Sun Belt Conference. They were led by seventh-year head coach Mark Hudspeth. They finished the season 5–7, 4–4 in Sun Belt play to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place.

The Golden Eagles were led by fourth-year head coach Will Hall for the first seven games. The Golden Eagles played home games at M. M. Roberts Stadium, located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
