The Rembetika Hipsters are a Canadian band based in Calgary, Alberta. They perform primarily Greek rebetiko music, as well as composing original music and exploring styles from Epirus, known as Epirotika, Smyrnaiko music from the region now known as Izmir, and Nisiotika music of the Greek islands.

History

The band began in 1996 with Nikos Diochnos (bouzouki, vocals) and Allen Baekeland (guitar and vocals). Giorgos Iosifelis plays bass guitar, Lincoln Frey adds clarinet and melodeon, Jonathan Lewis adds violin and baglamas and Malcolm Lim plays hand percussion instruments such as darbuke. Brigitte Dajczer also played and recorded the violin from October 1999 to 2007. [1] Other past members have included Danny Patton (bass), Ben Johnson (percussion), Jon Nordstrom (bass), and Edmond Agopian (violin).

By 1998 the band was performing locally in Calgary. [2] In 2002 they began performing weekly at Calgary's Pegasus restaurant, and continued there for many years.

The group later performed at music festivals, concert halls, and small venues across Canada. [3] [4] They have traveled to Greece twice to play, reunite with family, and learn about the culture. [5] They performed at the 2001 and 2007 Calgary Folk Music Festival.

In 2011 the band released their third album, Kafeneion. [6]

As of 2017, the Hipsters continue to perform in small venues around Alberta. [7]

Malicorne (band)

Malicorne are a French folk and folk rock band formed in September 1973 by Gabriel Yacoub, Marie Yacoub, Hughes de Courson and Laurent Vercambre. They flourished in the 1970s, broke up three times in the 1980s but re-formed twice in the early 2010s and toured from July 2012 until their last show in August 2017, after which they broke up.

The Kubasonics are a Ukrainian-Canadian speed-folk band based in St. John's, Newfoundland. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, The Kubasonics are honoured in the Ukrainian Canadian community for recreating traditional Ukrainian melodies, with a twist. Humorous or surprising alterations to time-honored songs create a sound that is often described as a "folk fusion." To create their unique sound, the Kubasonics incorporate traditional Ukrainian instruments such as the tsymbaly, drymba and Hurdy-gurdy into the context of a western rock band.

Jane Vain and the Dark Matter is an indie rock band formed in 2005 from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The band is fronted by Calgary native Jamie Fooks, and signed to Edmonton’s Rectangle Records. They describe their sound as indie electro-pop. The Montreal Mirror called their music "melancholy" and "macabre," and Fooks has been compared to Emily Haines, Cat Power, and Fiona Apple. They released their first full-length album, Love Is Where the Smoke Is, in January 2008.

The Consonant C are a Canadian alternative pop group formed in 2005 in Calgary. They are currently unsigned. They pull their influences from various genres of music including classical, jazz, punk rock and folk. Under the name The Summerwood Warren they co-organize and perform in monthly themed music and art shows, which bring together members from the Calgary arts community.

Rah Rah (band)

Rah Rah was an indie rock musical group formed in 2006 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. They toured extensively across North America and Europe. The band released four full-length albums, including 2015's Vessels. After a three year hiatus, the band played three final live shows in December of 2019 and disbanded.

Robert Andrew Scott is a Canadian musician and songwriter, specializing in alternative country, alternative folk, and folk rock, with additional interests in folk music and blues. Scott was born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. He is married to Julie Sauve Scott.

Trent Severn is a Canadian folk trio composed of Emm Gryner, Dayna Manning, and Lindsay Schindler. Founded in 2011, all three women share vocal duties and contribute to the songwriting process. They released their self-titled debut album in November 2012, under the imprint Dead Daisy Records.
