Renown was launched in 1794 at New Bedford, Massachusetts. She made four voyages from Nantucket as a whaler. In 1813, while she was on her fifth American whaling voyage, she became the first American whaler that British whalers captured in the South Seas. She was sold in London and under the name Adam became first a London-based transport and then a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. She made four whaling voyages and was wrecked in 1825 at the outset of her fifth British whaling voyage.

American whaler

Renown's service prior to 1797 is currently obscure.

1st whaling voyage (1797–1799)

Captain Alpheus Coffin sailed Renown in 1797 from Nantucket on her first whaling voyage. She was bound for Brazil and the Pacific. On 29 November 1797 she stopped at Desterro for provisions, refreshment, water, and wood. She received permission to stay for 10 days. [5] Coffin returned to Nantucket in 1799 with 1250 barrels of sperm oil and 150 barrels of whale oil. [6]

2nd whaling voyage (1801–1802)

Captain Thaddeus Coffin sailed from Nantucket in 1801, bound for Brazil and the Pacific. [6] In May Renown was at Valparaiso. [7] She returned on 26 November 1802 with 500 barrels of sperm oil. [6]

3rd whaling voyage (1803–1805)

Captain Alpheus Coffin sailed from Nantucket in 1803, bound for the Pacific. Renown returned on 3 November 1805 with 1250 barrels of sperm oil. [6]

4th whaling voyage (1810–1811)

A master, whose name is currently unknown, sailed Renown from Nantucket in 1810 and returned in March 1811. [6]

5th whaling voyage (1811–1813)

Captain Zaccheus Barnard sailed from Nantucket on 4 August 1811. A British letter of marque whaler captured Renown in 1813. At the time she had 1637 barrels of sperm oil. [6]

Capture

Renown was the first American whaler captured in the South Seas during the War of 1812. Her captors put her crew ashore at Massafuero (Más Afuera) Island. The Nantucket whalers Perseveranda and Sukey later rescued the crew. [8] [lower-alpha 1]

British whaler

On 20 November 1813 the prize Renown arrived at Gravesend from the South Seas. [11]

New owners renamed RenownAdam. She first entered Lloyd's Register in 1814 with Hannibal master, Bridges & Co., owner, and trade London transport. [4] The Register of Shipping for 1815 showed her with Honeybel, master, Rains, owner, and trade London transport. [1]

On 20 March 1814 the transport Adam arrived at Gibraltar from Portsmouth. [12] On 1 December, Adam, Hannibal, master, was at Deal, bound for Bermuda. [13] On 30 May 1815 the transport Adam arrived at Portsmouth from Havana. [14]

1st whaling/sealing voyage (1815–1818)

Captain Simeon Coleman sailed from London on 14 December 1815, bound for the Pacific. Adam was at Portsmouth on 6 January 1816, [15] and St Jago on 5 February. [16] She returned to Rio de Janeiro on 18 April 1818 from Peru, and London from Rio and the South Seas on 31 July 1818 with 500 casks of oil and 2250 skins. [3]

2nd whaling voyage (1819–1820)

Captain Foster sailed from Gravesend on 7 April 1819, bound for the South Seas. Adam returned on 8 December 1820. [3]

3rd whaling voyage (1821–1822)

Captain Coffin sailed from Gravesend on 11 February 1821, bound for the South Seas. [17] On 26 March she was at 3°30′N20°43′W / 3.500°N 20.717°W / 3.500; -20.717 . [18] [lower-alpha 2] On 22 July she was at Woolwich Bay with 38 tons of oil. [19] By October or so she was at 26°N30°W / 26°N 30°W / 26; -30 with 80 tons of oil. [20] On 26 December Adam was at St Helena. [21] She left on 3 January 1822, southward bound. Between 29 February and 8 March 1822 she was at Saint Helena. She then sailed for the Brazil Banks. [3] She left the Brazil Banks on 29 April. [22] Adam returned to England on 19 July 1822 with 400 casks of oil. [3]

4th whaling voyage (1822–1824)

Captain Coffin was at Deal on 26 August 1822, bound for the South Seas. [23] She sailed on 1 September from Deal and on 12 September from Portsmouth. [24] Adam returned on 17 June 1824 with 270 casks of oil, plus fins (baleen). [3]

Fate

The Register of Shipping for 1826 showed Adam with Rozier, master, Lyddeker, owner, and trade London–South Seas. [2] On 1 March 1825, a gale developed at Deal. Adam, Razier, master, returned from off Folkestone and attempted to anchor but the crew lost one cable and was unable to clear her chain. She was driven on shore and bilged. She had been sailing from London, bound for the South Seas. [25] She had set out on 20 February.

[9] The British captured Sukey off the Virginia coast as she was returning from the South Seas. [10] The British captured Perseveranda off Nantucket as she returned home in 1813. [9] Perseranda, of 242 tons (bm), had been launched in 1795 at Hingham, Massachusetts. She was returning from her sixth whaling voyage.
  2. The coordinates reported in Lloyd's List put Adam in the middle of what is today Algeria. Swapping East for West, and increasing the degrees by an order of magnitude puts her in the Atlantic, well off the coast of West Africa.

The Coffin family was prominent in the history of whaling in the United States, operating ships out of Nantucket, Massachusetts, from the 17th to 19th centuries. Some members of the family gained wider exposure due to their discovery of various islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Cyrus was a whaler launched at Salem in 1800. She performed one whaling voyage for French owners before a British letter of marque captured her in 1803. From 1804 on, she performed 17 whaling voyages for British owners in the almost half a century between 1804 and 1853. The first five were for Samuel Enderby & Sons. Between 1 August 1834 and 2 June 1848 her captain was Richard Spratly, namesake of Spratly Island and the group of islands and reefs known as the Spratly Islands. She apparently made one last voyage in 1854, but then no longer traded. She was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1856.

The whaler Globe, of Nantucket, Massachusetts, was launched in 1815. She made three whaling voyages and then in 1824, on her fourth, her crew mutinied, killing their officers. Eventually most of the mutineers were killed or captured and the vessel herself was back in Nantucket in her owners' hands. She continued to whale until about 1828. She was broken up circa 1830.

Indispensable was a sailing ship built in France and launched in 1791. She was captured in 1793 at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars and thus came into British hands, keeping her name. She performed two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1793 and 1797. During this period and later she made two voyages transporting convicts to New South Wales. Amongst her notable events were the discovery of Indispensable Strait (1794), the capture of a Spanish vessel (1798), and the rescue of some castaways (1814). She later went on serve as a whaler in the South Seas until autumn 1827. She ceased trading after this last voyage and was broken up by April 1830.

Rambler was launched in America in 1812. The British captured her in 1813 as she was returning to America from Manila. She then briefly became a West Indiaman. In 1815 she became a whaler in the Southern Fishery. She made four complete whaling voyages and was wrecked on her fifth.

Lord Hawkesbury was launched in the United States in 1781, probably under another name. She entered Lloyd's Register in 1787. She made six voyages as a whaler. On her second whaling voyage she "the first parcel of ambergris 'by any English whaler'". She was lost on the seventh after a squadron of French naval vessels had captured her. One of her original, British crew succeeded in regaining sufficient control from her prize crew to enable him to run her aground, wrecking her.

Paragon was launched at Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1803. She immediately sailed for Great Britain and thereafter sailed for some time as a merchantman under the British flag. She then made three whaling voyages between 1819 and 1828, and sank at sea near Oahu on her third.

Sir Andrew Hammond was launched at Bermuda in 1800. She spent almost a dozen years as a West Indiaman. From 1812 on she was a whaler. On her first whaling voyage she sailed to the Pacific where the United States Navy captured her. She then served briefly in the United States Navy before the British Royal Navy recaptured her. She returned to whaling and made a further eight whaling voyages. She was lost in 1841 on her tenth whaling voyage.

Charlton, was built in America. She first appeared in British-origin online records in 1803. She made three complete voyages as a whaler. She was on her fourth voyage when the U.S. Navy captured her. After her captors released her she returned to England and then disappears from easily accessible online records.

Manchester Packet was built at New York in 1806. She immediately transferred to British registry and spent a number of years trading across the Atlantic. In 1814 she successfully repelled an attack by a U.S. privateer. In 1818 she returned to U.S. registry. She eventually became a whaler operating out of New London, Connecticut. In May 1828 she made the first of five whaling voyages; she was condemned in 1835 while on her sixth voyage.

Fonthill was a ship built in France in 1781 and was probably taken in prize in 1782. Fonthill sailed as a West Indiaman between 1783 and 1791, then became a whaler southern whale fishery and made four whaling voyages between 1791 and 1799. On her third voyage she took back from Cape Town a Dutch captain whose vessel had been captured bringing in arms and ammunition from Batavia to stir up unrest against the British at the Cape. After refitting, in 1800, Fonthill became a whaler in the northern whale fishery. Fonthill was last listed, with stale data, in 1810, but whose last reported whaling voyage took place in 1806.

Brook Watson was launched in 1796, probably in Holland but possibly in Denmark. She became a prize in 1801 and by 1802 was a whaler in the British Southern Whale Fishery. She made two whaling voyages between 1802 and 1806. She then became a West Indiaman and was last listed in 1809 or 1810.

Aurora was launched at Whitby in 1789. Between 1799 and 1806 she made four voyages as a whaler to the British southern whale fishery. She was last listed in 1809 with stale data since her whaling voyages.

Warren was launched at Swansea, Massachusetts, in 1829. She made six complete voyages as a whaler operating from Warren, Rhode Island, before she burned in the Anadir Sea on 10 July 1852 on her seventh whaling voyage.

Venus was launched at Deptford in 1788 and made 15 voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. Of 812 whalers in the British southern whale fishery database for which there was data, she had the fifth highest number of whaling voyages. She was last listed in 1823.

Sir Charles Price was launched in America in 1812 under another name. The British captured her c.1814 and Daniel Bennett purchased her and added her to his fleet of whalers. She made six complete whaling voyages to the southern whale fishery, and was lost in 1833 on her seventh whaling voyage.

Caroline was launched at Nursapore in 1827. Her early career as a country ship, trading east of the Cape of Good Hope, is currently obscure. From 1834 on she proceeded to make six voyages as a whaler in the southern whale fishery. She disappeared from online records after her return to Great Britain in 1859.

Necker was a whaler built and manned by Americans but operating out of Dunkirk and sailing with French papers and under the French flag. Her masters came primarily from Nantucket, drawn by a French government program to build a French whaling industry based there. She made three whaling voyages to Greenland, the coast of Brazil, and the Pacific. On the voyage to the Pacific she transited Cape Horn in company with the brigantine Hope, under the command of the sealer and explorer Joseph Ingraham. The Spanish authorities detained her on suspicion of smuggling, but then released her. A British privateer captured Necker in September 1793 after the outbreak of war with France while Necker was returning to Dunkirk from Brazil and her fourth voyage.

Grand Sachem was launched at Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1801. She was registered at Bideford in 1803, but until 1815 sailed from Milford Haven. Between approximately 1803 and 1822, she made eight voyages as a whaler in the British southern whale fishery. She was last listed in 1822 and was broken up in 1826.

Cadmus was built in 1818 in New York. She was a packet sailing between New York and Havre. In 1824, Cadmus carried General Lafayette to New York on a visit at the invitation of the U.S. Congress. From 1827, Cadmus became a whaler, sailing from Sag Harbor, New York. She made 17 complete whaling voyages. During her whaling years Cadmus brought in oil and whale bone worth a total of $359,000. In 1849, a new owner sailed her to California so that he and his crew could take part in the gold rush there. They abandoned her in San Francisco, where she became a storehouse until she became too leaky; her bones were eventually buried under fill.
